  1. Great idea, and definitely count me in if/when things get going! I wonder whether somewhere with some reasonable dance floor space might be a good way of encouraging custom? We head out to Brixton on odd Friday nights for an ace indie night they run there at the Canterbury Arms -- basically the rather dingy back-room of a back-street Brixton boozer, but the dance floor space is great and the atmosphere it creates keeps you going back. Doesn't matter so much that it's a hit-and-miss half-hour journey on the 37 to get there, because it's worth it (very L'Oreal, sorry). Not sure whether there are places with potential dance floor space in ED? Needs that and a well-stocked bar, for whatever my thoughts are worth... Upstairs at the EDT or The Hob are the closest that spring to mind.
  2. He (and his wife) are lovely once they recognise you as a regular, though a bit minimalist when it comes to chat. Remember being so happy when I got my first smile of recognition!

They tend to have your food ready for collection inside 10-15 minutes, even at peak, which can be useful if you live Ploughwardly. Deliveries inexplicably always seem to take an hour, and don't order via their website, which seems to default to a late delivery time.
  4. It has always concerned me greatly that, for those of us living near the CPT, this bus heads EAST on the way to Streatham and WEST on the way to New Cross, completely counter-intuitively.. As a result, I have never deemed myself brave enough to trust it..
  5. So, given a lot of people (me included) bemoan the absence of Inside 72 given the frankly paltry selection of musical entertainment available elsewhere.. and there are lots of other nice but culturally deficient establishments dotted across ED that I'm sure would welcome the custom.. Are there any other budding DJs around the area interested in putting on something of a similar vibe to the halcyon days of I72 as a regular slot somewhere else? Nothing too strict on the musical selection front, but would be good to focus on the sixties rock/garage side of things, with some more modern takes on the genre, that used to go down so well.. Anyone in for giving it a go? Any venue suggestions? Pile 'em in, guys 'n gals... Yes, all of you complaining about them playing the Kaiser Chiefs in Adventure Bar.... ;-)
  6. And since when did they get rid of the Leffe and Hoegaarden in there? Why this fascination with bland, expensive lager?
  7. > Fascism, dictatorships and corruption emerge periodically in such societies. Love it! You nearly had me going there. Did you know that curry causes bloody religious civil war?

I bought the excellent Love Story on DVD at the weekend, and would highly recommend it to anybody with an interest in the band, or the sixties LA scene in general.. Interviews with pretty much the whole band, and lots of light shed on how it all went wrong after the sheer genius of Forever Changes.
  9. I do this quite regularly... Tend to leave Barry Rd about 06:25 and get to Elephant no later than 7. Allow 45 mins to be safe, but shouldn't take that long.

Where's the rush, people? If it were in France, you'd love it and say it has charm.. 'Fickle' is one word extremely apt for the residents of ED!
  11. > I would have gone after the little sh*ts with a golf club! Would you really? I wish I could say that. Sadly, like most (and fair play to you if you're not one of them), the risk of me coming off worse in this encounter discourages me from doing anything other than unleashing a menacing glare and tut and moving swiftly on. How did we all become so cowardly?
  12. From the Plough to Fenchurch St in the City.. 45 minutes door-to-door on the 40 bus most mornings.. perfect time for Guardian reading and iPod..
  13. Exciting! Any idea what they stock? Any specialist genres, or standard Top 40 fare?
  14. > (finally completed and rather grandly titled) 'Palace View' Must admit I laughed so hard when I saw this! Appreciate the building trade is going through a tough time at the moment, but the name smacks of sheer desperation!
  15. I generally love the place... but was slightly perplexed when I went in at 9pm one recent weeknight and was told they "didn't have any egg fried rice left". Huh? No rice? I know we're in the grips of a world food shortage, but seriously....
  16. Speaking of which, did anybody see the piece in last week's Time Out about how the 176 is a great bus until it gets to ED, where horrible iPod-wearing ponces get on? Tad harsh, I thought.. Inverse bus snobbery... where on earth will it end??
  17. This sounds very promising... Any idea what kind of stuff it will cover? 50s esoterica and 60s psych may be a bit specialist for me to wish for, but something other than the Coldplay back-catalogue for a fiver and Ministry of Sound compilations would definitely be good to see.. Was very pleasantly surprised by the CDs on offer in Roullier White, of all places.. A very limited selection, but clearly hand-picked by somebody with a keen appreciation of alt.country/power-pop, with acts like The New Pornographers and Josh Rouse that I wouldn't ever expect to find in a (what I shouldn't but can't resist describing as) basically a fancy kitchen/homeware shop..
  18. Your other option is the large number of regular buses that go into the centre of London.. I get the 40 in most mornings from the Plough directly into the heart of the City (Fenchurch St). Yes it takes a little longer (avg 45mins during rush hour), but you're guaranteed a seat.. comes every 5-10 mins, less over-crowding.. chance to read the paper.. cheaper.. etc. :) I just find it a far more civilised way to travel, and since my office also happens to be on the bus route, means no lost time either end. Other options are the 185 for Victoria, 12/176 for the West End, or the 63 for Holborn/Kings Cross.. All very regular during rush hour, due to a lot of them starting in ED or very nearby.

  20. ChiChiRaRa has a decent selection of gents' stuff in there..
  21. Just to clarify... The sandwich board is NOT referring to a new vintage clothes shop, but a new location of the 'Times Tables' vintage/antiques shop below the video shop on Lordship Lane that also has a stall out at the NX Road market on a Saturday. Was in there current location on Saturday and asked after it, and they confirmed it was them, and that they'll be moving in the next month or so. The new place will be basically opposite the Blue Brick cafe, it seems. New larger location will mean more furniture, apparently..
  22. It's the Big Brother house... obviously.... so, all sorts of emotional problems and mental illness!
  23. Rollin' - Limp Bizkit (hahahaha - sorry!)
  24. Cassius Wrote: > Music to my ears - if not too much of a pun...... > let me know and I'll be there. Awesome - appreciate the enthusiasm! Will definitely have to give this a go, then. > Do you get your music from the stall at Greenwich > market. Yep, have bought some gems from here. Otherwise, usual online retailers. Discovered a lot of genuine classics through turnmeondeadman.net, which I'd HIGHLY recommend.
  25. When I've been in there, they've had a good line in 60s garage, Hendrix and dirty southern rawk going on.. ..but don't forget, kids, that though the place may die (RIP), we can repatriate an alternative venue and keep the spirit alive! I for one would be MORE than happy to spin some Nuggets/Pebbels-era classics at a suitable venue.. But is there anywhere else in ED with that kind of vibe to it? Closest I've found is the Gowlett (not strictly ED, I know, I know) that doesn't have too 'varied' a clientele to be put off by a blast of West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band or the Electric Prunes..
