former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi grisett, I'm sorry you're so very badly misinformed and that you appear to have taken such umabrage with my actions. Your questions feel like an attempt to smear. No legal agreement has been signed with the developer. Council planning officers are asking for ?20,000 to be incldued within the Sectino 106 agreement with that developer towards a CPZ consultation. But I repeat nothing has been agreed or signed. And no developer will retrospectively pay for a CPZ. So in all likelyhood the money will sit in an accoutn for many years to come until another S106 consultation happen one day. As happened with the S106 for 72 Grove Vale which I understood was used towards Herne Hill CPZ eventually. You've suggested I voted in favour of the development - no I attended the planning committee as a local ward councillor and spoke in favour of that scheme as I believe Grove Vale needs a proper local library and this scheme will deliver an excellent one. This new library now has cross party support. With regards to the proposed CPZ. I have time and agian stated its a choice between experiencing parking pressures or paying for permits and having the inconvenience that causes and that for every resident that balance will be different. I have suggested and encouraged everyone to respond to the consultation regardless of their views or locations. I have tried to ensure I've found answers to everyone's questions - CPZ consultations are very expensive and don't happen very often. I think I've answered most of your questions. But I'd also add developers never ask to pay extra money in S106 or to restrict their home buyers from being able to parking locally. The developement is for 20 homes 10seconds from East Duwlcih station entrances out of a consulted area of 1,146 homes. It doesn't make a material difference and I doubt many people in said 20 homes would want a car - they would also be given car club membership for 3 years from memory by the developer. As for any relationship. Please see my declaration of interests. I have never taken or received anything from any developer ever. I've been offered pints in pubs twice as part of rounds and always refused. I've been offered bottles of wine by grateful residents and have always refused on principle that I never accept gifts of any size - excepting the odd chocolate biscuit. -

Hi Pugwash, I'm really saddened to hear aout this. It doesn't sound like foxes if so regular a pattern and number. Nappies could technically be clinical waste but can you imagine the palova it would cause to families - so I'd hope not. You need to try and work out who's doing it. If it persists then we'd need to get the Anti Social Unit (SASBU) involved. Please keep me posted. Hi BeccaL, I thought it was a public right of way and would be highways. But its not shown on the Southwark Council map or Google maps. Or at least Firemens Alley is shown from Lordship Lane to Dulwich Park but not all the way through to Dulwich Coomon (South Circular). So I suspect the northern half is highways and southern half council housing. Which bit is causing the problem? On Saturday the southern half from memory didn't look covered in leaves but I was just walking past. Eitherway I'll report the issue and ask questions over who runs it and why its not shown fully on maps. -

Hi northlondoner, I've just been assured that litter picking is occurring every other day on Hindmans Road and it was last swept 3 weeks ago and will be swept next week. If you find its not beeing swept everyother day could you please send me some picture of the same spot over several days? -
Hi Penguin68, Ill find out as I was also wondering this. NB. The Integrated Waste Management Facility will finally open to the public and be fully operational in the New Year. You can then visit.

Fortnightly blue bin collection not enough?
James Barber replied to Mrs TP's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Sue, I was called last Wednesday asking about this issue - I think they read the forum. I gave a potted history which they largely seemed to use and told them about your question. Sorry if you didn't want that! Hi savage, bloonoo, I agree. So I asked council officers who agreed to run an experiment. 2/4 of the Friern Road council blocks were given bags with handles and the other two without. They're due to report back whether it made a difference to food waste collections. As soon as I have that info I'll let you know. Anecdotally for my household. No handles is making me consider buying my own bags with handles or giving up as I find it really fiddly and I'm a keen recycler. So I suspect many will have given up for collect food waste sparodically. -
Spate of burglaries in East Dulwich
James Barber replied to EastDulwichRose's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi EastdulwichRose, East Dulwich is a huge area - close to the heart of Dulwich Village in the west and as far as Forest Hill Road on the east. We're talking about 20,000 homes and 45,000 people. 60 burglaries in a month is clearly 60 to many but at this incidence rate it would take on average 28 years for each home to be burgled. Taking preventative measures such as those listed by TigerMountain dramatically reduces your chances of being burgled from that. Hi joom, You should talk to the newspapers about your case - clearly ridiculous. Email if you want to be introduced. Hi drew, One of the three East Dulwich ward Police priorities is fighting burglary. -
Hi sue, Yes, you can whatever your view - for or against. If you email the planning officer [email protected] and copy the planning officer most likely to present the officer report on the night [email protected]. Plus worth copying the chair person [email protected].

The Planning Application for a "temporary" 10m x 7m (32.5' x 22.75') advertising hoarding (for 1 year) comes before the Dulwich Community Council Planning committee this Thursday 24 November at 7pm - which will be at St.Barnabas Church (The Lounge), 40 Calton Avenue, SE21 7DG. IF you think such a large advertising hoarding facing SW is a good or bad idea do come along and tell councillors why they should grant or refuse this application. The report is on page 57 of this report - And you can view the scheme at - 11-AP-2953 The applicant is effectively Greene King who own this pub (via Capital Pubs) and 2,000+ other pubs.

Hi Reggie, Sorry you didn't like it. Hi Freddy1929, The extra crossing on Lordship Lane. The rasied entry treatment across the mouth of East Dulwich Grove where it meets Lordship Lane has been completed. The two crossing will be installed starting in January. I asked that they only be installed outside the Christmas period as we don't want to harm trade or distract traders with road workers at Xmas. The works will take from 6 January until mid March BUT most of that time will work wont be onsite but the elapsed time will be 10 weeks - concrete curing etc. Also, big depedency on TfL contractors to install the Puffin lights. Hi northlondoner, Street sweeping on Hindmans Road. In February the Labour administration chose to reduce street sweeping to every 4 weeks. Litter picknig has also been reduced but several times a week your street should be litter picked - and yes it is a shame we still need to pay people to pick up litter dropped by idiots. I have asked when Hindmans was last litter picked and when it will next be swept. -
Hi Silversurfer65, Most people within the food waste scheme are using little biodegradable pale green bags to line the small brown food caddies kept in the kitchen. Makes it feel less messy and extends the time before the caddy needs a thorough clean. It also reduces the chance of stray food not going in the weekly collection trucks. But you don't have to use the bags and not using them saves a wee bit of money for the council.

Chesterfield Grove residents. A number of complaints have been made to me about the Chesterfield Grove car wash which technically is at 94 Lordship lane. I've been surprised how far down Chesterfield Grove residents have been so annoyed to complain to me about it. Council Planning enforcement officers have confirmed that its 1999 planning permission allowed for it to operate Mon-Sun 9am-7pm. Please see attached. I've asked these officers to ensure the second condition about ensuring spray stays in the premises have been met. I've also noticed what appears a recent new structure on site so have asked officers to ensure it has planning permission. I'm sure this car wash can exist causing less nuisance to local residents and be a successful business. If you have any concerns or issues please do let me know. -

Spate of burglaries in East Dulwich
James Barber replied to EastDulwichRose's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi drew, I'd imagine these stats are for SE22 as local East Dulwich ward Police told me August has 22 burglaries a peak. We still have free property marking kits - if you live in East Dulwich ward please email me your name, address and contact numbers and will arrange for one to be dropped round to you. And tigerMountain that is great advice - well done. -
But you said council officials told you only two humps needed doing?

Thanks Sue, Hi the-e-dealer, The noise team cuts was a Labour administrations choice. I voted agaisnt this cut and voted for keeping it under our fully costsed and finance director confirmed budget alternative. You clearly don't like what I've done and represent. Fine. But please don't lie and make things up about me.

Whether London's 7.5 million residents want an extra 1 million neighbours. Those extra 1 million will generate more issues and pressures in places such as East Dulwich. -

Hi fazer71, Many thanks for your comments and I hope you responded to the consultation - but I'd prefer to avoid this thread becoming another CPZ thread. -

The current projections are for London to expand by 1 million people by 2031 from 7.5 Million. That's a lot of people to house. http://www.london.gov.uk/shaping-london/london-plan/facts/ http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23838968-population-of-london-set-to-hit-83m-high.do I wish Mayoral and national politicians would ask people whether they want this or not and what the merits and demerits of this are. For example single persons council tax discount is a surprising incentive when we're so short of places for people to live already before the extra million people. Attached is a 2008 report indicating what the local fall out of this London forecast population growth is for the Dulwich area. It shows a forecast growth from 33,000 to 39,000 residents by 2021 and then some decline. So, unless average car ownership goes down we probably will see more residents living locally and those residents wanting to own and park cars. Hence my drive for more people to use the Car Club Cars. At the same time car ownership costs in real terms are going down but public transport costs in real times are increasing rapidly. Again not helpful with a rapidly inreasing London and local population. -

I suspect JeffJames that that's just the service men who died and not civilians who died in WWI or II and were buried there? -

The Dulwich Hospital War Memorial was also very well attended this year on Friday with around 50 people. Very moving to hear all 119 names read aloud. To think these patients that died didn't die quickly but after many days, weeeks, months of treatment. I pray my children never have to face a war. -

James Barber replied to joobjoob's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Peterstorm1985, Virtually all changes to roads in Southwark are implimented via Experimental Traffic Management Orders and then typically 12-18 monhs later a consultation to see if they should be made permanent or not usually with some tweaking. That is my understanding for these proposals. PeckhmBoy, FYI - 20% of East Dulwich ward housing is social housing. The national average for the UK is 17% so despite appearance of many wealthier people in ED it isn't a rich area and most people are not wealthy. Such housing in East Dulwioch includes 500 council properties called 'acquire street properties' where the council 40-60 years ago bought victorian homes often subdivided them badly into flats. Hi woodleigh, I think I've said various times that I would have prefered the council to have formally consulted more widely. That as an opposition councillor I failed to persuade the administration to formally consult adjoining streets in East Dulwich ward and did ask for Mathem, Tell, Ashbourne, Chesterfield, Blackwater and Bassano to be consulted - the money didnt stretch that far and on reflection I can see an even better case for those neighbouring street in South Camberwell ward due to the strange shape of streets north of Grove Vale. Hi henryb, TfL regularly does origination and destination studies of commuters. I'll ask GLA Assembly Member Caroline Pidgeon who to ask in TfL and if we can view that data. Hi hugenot, I suspect you're correct that IF controlled parking proceeded then any commuters who still wanted to park in the area would be dissipated over more neighbouring streets but that is obviously no comfort to residents on those streets. And the uncertainty to what degree that takes place. I think arguments that no problem exists has'nt helped with this issue.
