  1. Hi Rockets, I did chair Southwark Cyclists 20 years ago. But I do cycle, walk, car, public transport locally. I would genuinely like to understand the 2,500+ petition against the local LTN's. If those are genuine local residents then it needs to be looked at again. Equally, if the LTN is going to stay then we need to make it work better and get people tempted to shop in those Melbourne Grove shops. Perhaps a new street market at the Grove Vale end.
  2. Effectively these proposals for Townley Road are producing a School Street. I don't think they're using the name. Much more ambitious than previous School Streets in that it a popular route rather than a culled sea almost on one drives down. The change to Townley Road etc have been trailed since before COVID. The council believes they have consulted on them. Some of the reasoning comes from complaints about how dangerous school coaches and traffic levels on Townley Road can be. Previously threads on this forum, and also direct complaints to Southwark Council and Councillors, about traffic on Townley Road. Often from drivers complaining about School Coaches blocking their journeys. Be careful what you complain about!
  3. Number is issues. In real terms driving has never been cheaper. Installation of the CPZ, LTN planters and COVID at broadly the same time has made this more painful to digest than it needed to be. COVID. Traffic levels are reported as now higher across London than before COVID. Lots I guess avoiding public transport. So even if nothing was done more congestion was more likely. All day CPZ aimed at commuter parking should have been a PPA operating for small part of the day once commuters had started to return to the area. Study several years ago showed 22% of our local shops custom came by car but in the current climate that 22% could be make or break for local businesses. Closing roads seems to be the only thing that changes driver behaviour. But the consultation on this feels incomplete so bound to get lots of opposition. So I welcome the LTN idea. Locally we have a long history of such closures making the area better. But they take considerable time before they become truly accepted e.g. Friern Road, Gilkes Crescent, Oakhurst Grove, etc. But concerned about how residents have been engaged. But my reflection is relying on people driving to do the decent thing and not rat run, except when essential, has never worked - and technology is making it ever more unlikely to work. I would personally prefer see more often closures with camera enforcement to non Southwark residents to stop rat running. Often quoted ot me that half of Southwark traffic start and ends journey outside Southwark so huge proportion of rat running down streets never designed for such traffic levels.
  4. Due to an earlier incident this evening in the Peckham area, and to prevent further violence, a Section 60 has been authorised by a senior Police officer covering SE21, SE22, SE5 and SE15. This will last 24 hours expiring at 18.40 tomorrow Friday 09 October. What does this mean? The Police can stop and search anyone in these designated areas / postcodes.
  5. Hi FairGirl, I was Southwark Cyclists chairperson for several years ending from memory 2002. I bought/rented the southwark Cyclists URL way back pre 2000 and it was only around 15 years that I transferred maintaining these payments to Southwark Cyclists. I am a member of London Cycling Campaign - have been since 1992 - which automatically makes me a member of the local Southwark branch called Southwark Cyclists. I have also been a member of Living Streets which makes me a member of Southwark Living Streets for similar period but never leading them. Surprised to hear my name is still against the Southwark Cyclists URL. You asked about other possible stakeholder groups - many are asked but not so many choose to get involved. WRT to Southwark Cyclists - it felt like we were often banging our heads against brick walls when we were consulted. Personally. I think implementing a CPZ and LTN's at the same time makes it very hard to digest together. An all day CPZ as a trial instead of, as my lot proposed in 2021, a 1 hour CPZ during a trial is the wrong way round. With a Climate Crisis it is strange how so many are so adamant nothing should or can change. We need a 90% reduction in our CO2 emissions to have habitable planet. 6. Hi bookstamper, Please ensure you have a Party Wall agreement with them to ensure your garden and wall are returned in an acceptable standard. Such agreements are made at the cost of the party making changes within 2m of a boundary - and they pay for you to employ a Party Wall Surveyor. The number of horror stories when people didn't exercise their rights in this respect.
  7. Hi Abe_froeman, Very much doubt a Waitrose. When I was one of the East Dulwich Councillors I talked to them and they were looking for a site in the area larger than the current M&S on Lordship Lane. Hi JohnL, Seems unlikely the site isn't large enough for a Weatherspoons.
  8. The London Mayor Sadiq Khan has decided the Silvertown car tunnel, costing ?2bn, is more valuable than the Bakerloo line extension and Rotherhithe cycl/pedestrian bridge. So much for fighting global warming with active travel and public transport etc.
  9. The alternative I found to driving my kids around when small - Nihola trike - http://www.nihola.com/home.html You can try one out at London Recumbents in Dulwich Park who distribute them. Kids LOVED It. Once had six little ones in it around Belair Park. Best part was convincing them if they flapped their 'wings' it helped me cycle up hills. Furthest cycled kids loaded was Coram's Fields. Happy to share privately pictures of family using it. 10. Hi slarti b, I think the key is the number not the proportion of car trips. Last 20 years no increase in London roads but significant increases in London's population and public transport. Not so much change in public transport locally but OVergorund, no.42 bus extension. Last 25 years extra 2 million Londoners another 2m expected in the next 25 year. So anticipate lots more trips being made. So even if proportion of car trips has declined the total number may have risen. So key is number not proportion - will be interested to see your stats. Regards James. slarti b Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > rahrahrah Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > @slartiB - Probably some good data here: > > > > > https://data.london.gov.uk/dataset/traffic-flows-b > orough > > > I have the data at home. 11. Royal Mail is regulated by OFCOM who state: Royal Mail Customer Service Centre, FREEPOST, 20 Turner Road, St Rollox Retail and Business Park, Glasgow. G21 1AA Tel: 03457 740 740 (textphone 0846 000606) Royal Mail customer services https://personal.help.royalmail.com If your complaint cannot be resolved, the operator can issue a ?deadlock' notice that will allow you to ask the Independent Postal Redress scheme to investigate your case - https://www.cedr.com/consumer/postrs/ The scheme can only investigate complaints about Royal Mail's regulated postal services. If your complaint is about a non-regulated service and you are still unhappy with Royal Mail's response, you should seek independent legal advice.
  12. Much of the Lordship Lane Bus Lane would ideally be replaced by wider pavement rather than Bus Lane operating 24/7/365. Compounded withe soon Controlled Parking Zone will further increase parking pressures on streets to the east of Lordship Lane.
  13. My understanding is the Goose Green Labour Councillors live: James Ashworth-McLintock (James McAah) - Nunhead & Queen's Road ward Victoria Olisa - Champion Hill ward Charlie Smith - Dulwich Hills ward So no, none of them live on Melbourne Grove. Please don't make or relate much accusations.
  14. The Sainsbury's planning application 1992 Section 106 - legal agreement between Southwark Council and Sainsbury's. Sainsbury's are on the hook for opening St.Francis Park at sunrise, closing it at sunset. Maintaining it. Litter picking, etc. Southwark council is on the hook for enforcing this but doesn't. I had a number of meetings over the years with council officers to try and get any traction. I wrote to Sainsbury's head office, etc. It's actually in ChampionHill ward (previously South Camberwell warD) but the Councillors hadn't shown any interest in fixing this. It should be a council priority ot raise it to a Green Flag standard. Checking with Green flag people even privately maintain parks can be awarded this - current administration pretended it couldn't.
  15. Couldn't agree more with you rupert james. But the degree that Southwark Council consultants is something ward Councillors have huge influence over. If a letter hasn't been posted to every resident, with street notices, then the ward Councillors haven't been thorough in directing the council consultation. Certainly what my lot did when representing the area. I believe the proposals are due to the Melbourne Grove (north) section being an extremely busy through route for vehicles but a pretty narrow road. This has been a longstanding problem. Slightly relieved when me and my colleagues had the no.37 bus rerouted away. But with a secondary school entrance there now that changes things. If Melbourne Grove (north) alone was closed then the 4,610 vehicles going north and south would likely divert and many would travel via Derwent Grove. Then if that was closed Elsie. In abstract closing Derwent and Elsie due to traffic would seem odd - average daily traffic flows respectively of 863 and 747. But knowing a good proportion would of 4,610 vehicles divert down them... The changes will be under an Experimental Traffic Management Order - so can be changed quickly with any problems identified. The junction of East dulwich Grove and Lordship Lane is a huge concern for me. I think it needs a Zebra across to continue Lordship Lane pavement and make it critically clear to drivers they have to give way. As a minimum this should be included in the proposed and now planned changes/closures. What do others think?
  16. Hi wolrdwiser, Majority of Dulwich Hospital was built on the cheap. One brick thick for much of the side wings. So almost impossible to make a case to keep them and minimise heating requirements, etc. It will be great to see the Chateau refurbished - it should look great when completed. Hi seenbeen, That is extremely worrying. I would personally not remain registered with a GP practice if replaced by such a private entity. If enough patients make it clear they are refusing to use such private GP providers we morally object to then the local NHS would be expected to listen or made to listen. I suspect nothing to stop a local council creating a not for profit GP provider to compete - or other group - without the need to make profits it should out compete and win such contracts.
  17. Hi dc, I was the driving force for the following schools: - Harries Academy East Dulwich Primary School - The Charter East Dulwich school idea and obtaining the site. Originally fought tooth and nail by the Labour council. The council officer in charge at the time literally said "over my dead guilt in East Dulwich. I assisted: - Belham school application - proposing the site for the Judith Kerr Primary School - Advice and putting SE1 parent campaign in touch with Haberdasher's resulting in Haberdashers' Aske's Borough Academy For brief time the Hospital site was proposed to also house a primary school when it was unclear the NHS would build any health replacement facility on the site. I believe you know this dc but you have a party political axe to grind.
  18. Hi theron, Which mast please? RegardS James.
  19. Paying you're membership, but the majority of costs have been paid through the government furlough scheme. You should seek a refund for a service not provided. At the very least a discount for not providing the service should be provided.
  20. That's illegal. Report to Police 101.
  21. I think that junction Lordship Lane with EDG needs a Zebra crossing for people walking along Lordship Lane. We wangled a number of tweaks past highways people over the years to try and sort this out but clearly it needs much more.
  22. But the UK does have a road hierarchy. Motorways, dual carriageway, A road, B road, unclassified road - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-on-road-classification-and-the-primary-route-network This Manual for Streets - https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwjctqqZ6tjqAhWkQxUIHXswBhAQFjAKegQIBBAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fassets.publishing.service.gov.uk%2Fgovernment%2Fuploads%2Fsystem%2Fuploads%2Fattachment_data%2Ffile%2F341513%2Fpdfmanforstreets.pdf&usg=AOvVaw3fQ2fpERMEtyUUOBDv-Q1d - altogh printed way back tries to explain how to balance place with route.
  23. Always good to complain to the school Bursar [email protected] . I've always found them responsive.
  24. Hi Dulwichgirl82, Not today. Will make a point looking pm rush hour today and am tomorrow.
  25. 25 years ago London population 6.8 million and is now 8.8million. Forecast is London population will increase from 8.8 to 10.8million residents over the next 25 years. If the same ratio drive then driving gets much much harder. Roads much more congested. Even the same ratio of people walking, cycling see's many more people travelling by these methods wanting and demanding better conditions to walk and cycle. Public transport becomes ever less pleasant with over crowding. Doing nothing makes everyone cross and would be no way to try managing this huge population increase. Trying to make changes to reduce the proportion of car driving for journeys will also cause huge angst, and worry for those who are essential car drivers.
