Grove Vale (no longer) closed off to all traffic
Nigello replied to gebbjane's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Gosh, looks nasty - two big, heavy vehicles like that could do serious damage to life and buildings. Best wishes to all unlucky enough to have been involved. -
Unfair comparisons - you know as well as I do that this was a one-off national occasion, similar to the Olympics though much shorter, and that businesses often choose to hitch a ride on a bandwagon they don't especially like (World Cup, Hallowe'en, and yes, pride) to make a bit of money and to generate footfall for themselves and the wider business community. Nobody could have avoided the jubilee and many will have had extra time off work and therefore more likely to want to consume, so why not just invest a little in this never-to-be-repeated event and make some money? And yes, I was pleased to have taken part in the jubilee events though I am not a dyed-in-the-wool royalist so the idea that I am a tub-thumping monarchist doesn't wash. As for Pentecostals, give me a Lutheran any day...

A lot of money on flags? Be serious, please. A few quid - twenty or so at most and likely a lot less. xdulwicher Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > so business owners who did not make the effort > (flag, bunting, poster, etc.) could well have > earnt a bit more if they had > > The alternative point being that spending a lot of > money on plastic flags and a cardboard cutout of > the Queen for a one-off weekend may not be the > wisest investment - especially if people are going > to be up in town watching or gone on holiday. > > I get the "looking smart" and "keeping the place > tidy" things absolutely. My point was that not everyone likes or celebrates football/Xmas/Halloween yet businesses know it is a way of trying to drum up business, at least a little, so business owners who did not make the effort (flag, bunting, poster, etc.) could well have earnt a bit more if they had. Who cares about the reason, just do your best to make money and keep people employed. Much has been written about the demise (sic) of LL and the influx of chains (whcih have big budgets and whole departments dedicated to sprucing up and decorating premises because it drives custom) yet it is ok, even laudable, for small businesses in a very tricky retail market to do nothing to attract spending ahead of and over a four-day holiday weekend. Sounds like cutting one's nose to spite one's face, but I don't have a business to think of or folk to employ or overheads to pay.

Welcome to Britain, where a decently constructed criticism with factual evidence = policing. 🤷♂️

Apparently healthy roadside tree being chopped down
Nigello replied to kford's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Or just accept and acknowledge the tree people are pro-tree and not soot-eating, chlorophyll-hating savages and that many new trees are being planted. (Two on LL near Court, two near the new zebra on Whately, etc. -
The Queen & Corgi's are back. Mural ED
Nigello replied to aquamanda's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Very welcome to have back, as is the support from aquamanda and her colleagues. Some businesses are good at offering spaces for art - Mrs Robinson, the Magdala pub and the Mary Portas-inspired charity shop are three that spring to mind - but so many others shut up shop and leave teh rest of us to suffer the ugly, vandalised shutters with no effort whatsoever to clean it off. Unimpressed but not surprised -
I think it is a bit of a pain to change, but less of a pain than not having any bus at all. Maybe the money saved could one day be used to fund minibuses to supplement the bigger/longer routes, ie. providing a cross-borough or cross-neighbourhood route.

Ditch the mayorship as it stands here and elsewhere- another layer of mostly impotent roles and all the flummery that goes with it. Or make the role much more powerful and conflate all the boroughs in major conurbations (London, Manchester, Glasgow, Sheffield etc.) into a proper city status. Khan is uninspiring yet believes he?s a true potentate. Ken had some style and a popular touch. Boris had charisma and energy as mayor but used it as a stepping stone.

Show me a businessman or woman who is not interested in making more money, and therefore not interested in ways to try to do that, and I'll show you a unicorn. That is the nub of the matter - this place is full of posts lamenting the way in whcih the main drag has changed and others that tell of great woes in retail so not capitalising on a chance to make things better for themselves and their employees - even if it is just a chance - is strange indeed. But if you want to make it about how with it you are for showing your republican (and therefore desirable and to be lauded) tendencies, go ahead - add it to the list of misconceptions this place is so famous for...

Typical hyperbolic and virtue signalling (because virtue, of course, equals bashing anything that has to do with tradition or, shock horror, a flag) responses to a measured and balanced position. Nobody talked about forcing anyone to do anything; I think those who are nettled are secretly embarrassed at their lack of community spirit. Bottom line, if you are able to stick up some flags for the footy or some sparkling lights for Xmas, knowing that you are likely to chime in with a fair few customers or potential customers, why not do it for another national celebration and see whether it does make for a few extra quid in the till. Money talks and Lordship Lane needs as much help as it can get - or haven't you seen the threads on closed stores and the over-abundance of expensive coffee shops?

Poor show by most of the proprietors of business - chain and private - on LL. Mrs Robinson, The Palmerston and a few others (the dentist at the G Green end and the florist also did great jobs) - but the others simply CNBA. Even if they're not even remotely royalists or not from a UK or Commonwealth heritage, don't they understand that practically any gimmick is good for business, especially as retail is recovering from massive body blows from lockdowns and their knock on effects. Like attracts like, so if the frontages look welcoming and festive the businesses they belong to may very well get more footfall. (Eg. Xmas lights and decos or footy bunting during the Euros, etc. are par for the course.) Not impressed and don't rate their community spirit or their commitment to helping all retailers out after a torrid time. (Did the council or any local business organisation not have any thoughts on this?)

Good work and great that there is a matt covering to help clear off any vandalism or other marks. -
Yes, I keep a couple of tenners in my wallet in case but really don't like the jangliness and heaviness of coins. Bring back pound notes....

BlueLeaf Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > By the way, it may be more effective to complete > the official survey: > https://haveyoursay.tfl.gov.uk/busreview Agreed - waffling and whining on here is never likely to effect positive change.
-
The one-four-eight will pick up the slack. TfL is a costly thing to run so I can understand where the thinking is on this. I do think there are too many buses at certain times, resulting in bunching and extended journey times, which is good for noone and not the environment, either - static or near static diesel buses end to end is not a good look for TfL which is keen to burnish its green(ish) credentials.
-
We have lots of buses, Asset. We have three routes along nearly all of LL, then the smaller routes (P4, 485, P13, P12 etc.) and the Rye Lane routes down to E and C and beyond. I agree it is not a good idea to take away this route but to pretend we don't have a decent if not good number of routes is wrong.

Thanks - very useful

The 453 goes to Oxford Circus and up Regent St north. Another route, if you are near the northern end of Barry, is the 63 or 363 to Elephant then a change to 453. Pret A Manger coming to East Dulwich! (Now open)
Nigello replied to KateFord's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yes - I can see that such basic skills as taking money and giving the (correct) change could easily get lost. Next step, automated shopkeepers (who at least won't be on the phone)... -
Perhaps emails to our MP are needed - writetothem will give you the address and requirements (eg. putting down all personal information to ensure a response).

Best Breakfast in East Dulwich/Peckham?
Nigello replied to DuncanW's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think Amex foots the bill. It is to get more people using it and more shops and businesses to accept it, because Amex users tend to spend more on their credit card than users of Visa, etc. or debit cards. (It used to be more expensive for shops and firms to accommodate Amex but that is less the case now, I am told but I don't know the full facts.) -

Re Amex - you need to register via your online account, I think, for that cashback offer. I hope Luca?s is participating again. The full brekky I had there was very good.
