  1. Likewise re not using them, but I’ve not even had a delivered takeaway from the local Chinese, etc. for at least 25 years and have never ordered an Uber or Lyft, etc. I think they’re exploitative though I know others say they’re a good form of self employment.
  2. Ban people? Some folk are responsible and others aren’t. Best thing you can do is move a badly placed bike or scooter to a safer place.
  3. It’s easy to put pressure on them - just never use them.
  4. The two small bushes in the square plot at Cyrena/Whateley are burnt to a crisp. If anyone loves trees (and the benefits they bring to animals and humans) please water them, ideally with waste water.
  5. Honor Oak Park or Forest Hill to E Croydon then to Gatwick can take as little as 42 minutes, including five minutes to swap platforms. You can use contactless. Especially good if you’re travelling light.
  6. The lawlessness continues past the junction up to the park entrance near the Gallery - the pavement from the corner cemetery to the park gate is often used by cyclists of the “nice” kind who obviously think that because they’re upper-middle class and are cycling on expensive bikes with tots and/or pooches it’s magically legal to ride on the pavement.
  7. Tell the councillors and cc the MP. Include all personal information or the MP won't reply. WriteToThem is the place to find the information. Add images to help explain.
  8. Good tree management is a realistic part of any council's tree policy. Southwark has planted up to 11 000 trees recently, according to its own figures. Don't think that careful and considered action is the same as eco vandalism. Why not plant a tree yourself? Split open a pear or apple, plant the seeds in a pot or put them on damp tissue in a jam jar, and you'll likely get at least half of them sprouting. It'll take a little longer than posting on a website but don't let that put you off.
  9. Cyclists do barrel through the LTN, even the "nice" lady ones with silver helmets and all manner of day-glo sashes and cute kiddies on board. Very selfish but likely from a feeling of eco-powered entitlement that itself is fed by the anti-vehicle set up there.
  10. Jersey tiger moth already? I saw one in early July - probably the 6th or 7th. Is this a record?
  11. The heat was high and relentless over weeks, not a few days, in 1976. I doubt this heatwave will last more than six days though the highs will likely be higher than back then
  12. The newly finished area with the entrance on Underhill Road is now open and looks really good. Lots of new planting of native trees and bushes and large stretches of unmowed wildflowers.
  13. I have seen improvements regarding bins, etc. Southwark responded to my request that litter collectors put their plastic bags full of litter on top of bins where they can - apparently, according to a Southwark employee, agency staff were not told this. As for the parks, bigger bins have been put in Dulwich and Peckham Rye parks, so that is a good response though I would like to see more fines for people witnessed to have littered. There is nothing stopping anyone from picking up the odd bottle or can; lamenting that it is not one's job to do that is just a waste of time, IMHO.
  14. Yes - I stand corrected. Thanks
  15. Pop in and suggest they keep them as a sign of continuity and respect for the area. (When the traditional Chinese remedy shop opposite the Plough moved in, the owners were going to rip it out but decided against it after they were told of their significance).
  16. Cis - word appropriated from chemistry to attempt to make a mystique, even an air of pathology, out of everyday existence. https://www.historians.org/publications-and-directories/perspectives-on-history/may-2017/tracing-terminology-researching-early-uses-of-cisgender
  17. That video is shocking and yes, the bus appeared to be at least 70% over the median line. I?m surprised and glad there were no serious injuries.
  18. I agree - leave the site as it was found and, if it?s in the contract to do so, fine if not. I regularly pick up at least eight items of litter (most of it bottles and cans), which means at least seven people simply CBA to find a bin (the remaining piece having fallen out of a bin on collection day, etc.) The council can?t legislate for uncivilised lowlife but they can demand action from private firms with whom they have business contracts.
  19. Why not @ the organisers on Twitter etc. with your film and a link to this thread?
  20. Dark brown tubular case with black-r?mmed clear glasses, perhaps lost near the private road at the end of Mamoria (next to the Thames water facility) or PR Park from Colyton Road entrance.
  21. Gosh, looks nasty - two big, heavy vehicles like that could do serious damage to life and buildings. Best wishes to all unlucky enough to have been involved.
  22. Unfair comparisons - you know as well as I do that this was a one-off national occasion, similar to the Olympics though much shorter, and that businesses often choose to hitch a ride on a bandwagon they don't especially like (World Cup, Hallowe'en, and yes, pride) to make a bit of money and to generate footfall for themselves and the wider business community. Nobody could have avoided the jubilee and many will have had extra time off work and therefore more likely to want to consume, so why not just invest a little in this never-to-be-repeated event and make some money? And yes, I was pleased to have taken part in the jubilee events though I am not a dyed-in-the-wool royalist so the idea that I am a tub-thumping monarchist doesn't wash. As for Pentecostals, give me a Lutheran any day...
  23. A lot of money on flags? Be serious, please. A few quid - twenty or so at most and likely a lot less. xdulwicher Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > so business owners who did not make the effort > (flag, bunting, poster, etc.) could well have > earnt a bit more if they had > > The alternative point being that spending a lot of > money on plastic flags and a cardboard cutout of > the Queen for a one-off weekend may not be the > wisest investment - especially if people are going > to be up in town watching or gone on holiday. > > I get the "looking smart" and "keeping the place > tidy" things absolutely. 24. My point was that not everyone likes or celebrates football/Xmas/Halloween yet businesses know it is a way of trying to drum up business, at least a little, so business owners who did not make the effort (flag, bunting, poster, etc.) could well have earnt a bit more if they had. Who cares about the reason, just do your best to make money and keep people employed. Much has been written about the demise (sic) of LL and the influx of chains (whcih have big budgets and whole departments dedicated to sprucing up and decorating premises because it drives custom) yet it is ok, even laudable, for small businesses in a very tricky retail market to do nothing to attract spending ahead of and over a four-day holiday weekend. Sounds like cutting one's nose to spite one's face, but I don't have a business to think of or folk to employ or overheads to pay.
  25. Welcome to Britain, where a decently constructed criticism with factual evidence = policing. 🤷‍♂️
