  1. I don’t buy this - the school is already situated next to acres of open grassland and trees, much more likely sources of pollen but there’s no plan to raze all the greenery. So, a few square yards of grass in front of a school whose windows don’t seem to ever be open is highly unlikely to make it a sneeze fest for the school’s pupils or teachers. (PS I have hay fever and still prefer a theoretical chance of a moment or two’s unpleasantness to destroying flora and fauna *by the council which we pay for*.)
  2. It’s sad to see (at least) two patches of long grass, wildflowers (and all the small creatures within) being all but destroyed at that hands of the council. A lovely patch on Upland, next to the end of a row of social housing and the much larger area of grass outside the boys’ secondary school on Peckham Rye. If anyone knows the best department at the council to contact please let me know.
  3. I just had a mid-morning Sunday delivery. It was two magazines and several postcards which makes me think it was a “backlog” delivery of items deemed less important than most other forms of mail. At least effort is being made to clear the glut.
  4. Please do report it. It helps the police build up a case/report.
  5. The article also refers to other ways in which councils use public spaces such as parks to raise money for services, which is relevant to this thread.
  6. Thing is, Poundland does accept it and has for ages but this branch has an ongoing IT problem, it seems. I had no other card and no cash the first time I went.
  7. https://amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/apr/19/tough-mudder-finsbury-park-damage-green-spaces N London lament over council’s allowing of park to be used for events similar to the one being discussed on this forum
  8. The place wouldn’t take Amex due to “a problem” twice last week. Nobody had a clue as to when Amex would be accepted again. Shelves were oddly empty but only a few of them. It’s clean, bright and not crowded and I got what I’d gone in for (and a few things I’d not had on my list). 7.5/10
  9. Same is about to happen on Dunstan’s, from Goodrich to Mt Adon Park. Expect lots of disgruntled, likely obstreperous, driving-kiddies-to-school-and-back parents….
  10. Nonsense - police explaining the dangers of running red lights to the cyclist and others seems a rare bit of useful public service from officers these days. Cyclists without lights/helmets/bells/hi-viz/running reds/on pavement abound and it’s dangerous and selfish of them.
  11. 2 x small fish (2”) in River Peck just at the bridge where the parkies’ office is, around 08:30, fighting the current very impressively. Sticklebacks or something else?
  12. Increasing dairy, fish, poultry and meat (and certain non-animal foods) is said to be a quick way of pushing up B12 levels. (NHS) If you’ve been lacking in such kinds of foodstuffs it could well be the cause of a deficiency - doctors etc. tend to look for the most rational/common reasons first and then go down less usual routes to find the reason for conditions.
  13. The counter demonstrators were larger in number than the original protesters and shouted (with free F words, folks) “this is what a community looks like” which isn’t correct because a community isn’t a members’ club with rules and admission criteria. A community is made of all sorts. If they (or anyone else) are truly community minded, much better to spend their time picking up litter, checking on neighbours, donating to local charities, communicating with local councillors, using their local library, volunteering, etc. Chanting slogans (which likely takes even more time to practise) for hours on end really doesn’t help your fellow citizen, but it does give you a nice, warm glow on such a wintery day. 👍
  14. I have a solution. We all pay a bit more tax. There - sorted. Who’s with me? 🦗 🦗 🦗
  15. The window coverings give a lot of (obviously, pro-Poundland) info, including that prices will not be higher than in their larger shops and various statements on the company’s environmental and charity credentials. I think the big bosses are well aware of the brickbats thrown at the firm and so are striking back.
  16. I agree with Spartacus. Clean up the Lane to show a bit of respect to the people who have little choice but to shop and work there, even with its litter and vandalism.
  17. I had two jays feeding and then a third, being fed on site by one of the other two (I’m guessing) last spring. They loved the suet balls/slabs. Not been back yet. :/
  18. People can hold several different outrages at any one time. Dahl’s family acquiesced to Netflix’s requests (demands) for sanitised/de-fanged/bowdlerised/censored content so as to be able to sign a lucrative contract with it. I’m all for historical accuracies and not for airbrushing a la Soviet politburo to save a few (billion) bob.
  19. Visiting ≠ joining? If I “visited” a picket line, even without taking a leaflet or muffin, I’d class myself as joining it. (I’ve visited them several times but always described it as “joining”.)
  20. Each to their own. PH is a great asset and I hope it survives and thrives. It made use of dead space and opened up that section of LL to more footfall as well as provided jobs and business opportunities for contractors, etc. PP has no attraction for me - too far, having to endure ugly and unloved (by the council, at least) Rye Lane, small selection of films, annoying audiences at times (according to several sources of all sorts).

  22. No P13 bus stop either. How were the poor locals to manage without this route to complain about back then?!
  23. That’s a pity for those who worked there. Please don’t gentrify my area - because ugly scrawling on shutters always helps bring in jobs and investment… Southwark really needs to blitz-clean all the sullied shop fronts and make landlords accountable for the mess they can leave behind when they and their tenants shut up shop for the day.

  25. Not all burners are bad. Not all fuel is bad. Some burners exceed current legislation. Some fuel, especially that made from what would otherwise be wasted sawdust or coffee grounds etc., burns exceptionally cleanly. Burning unseasoned wood or coal that’s not been treated should be reported (but what about bonfires and barbecues…)
