Annoying words that have cropped up in our language
Nigello replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
Shuttered, to mean shut/closed/went out of business. (Horrid term, horrid things) -
Posh mummies and daddies with all the gear (gold helmets, trendy jackets, paniers fore and aft) love to brandish the kiddywinks they carry as a kind of carte blanche to cycle on footpaths, even when they’re right next to a cycle lane and/or a LTN. Resist! (Lycra-clad “professionals”, though, are often courteous and law-abiding, stopping at zebras and knowing their place is on the road and not the pavement.)

Where?

Please post a number for humble taxpayers to speak to a real person, if you have one. Emails go unanswered and phone calls via the switchboard likewise.

Peckham Centre is neglected by council members, householders and business owners alike, to varying degrees. It needs attention and money and if this development helps it become cleaner, safer and more sustainable and welcoming I’m in favour.

Westbury Chemist is on the P13 route and is open till midnight every day. I had searched here for information on a nearby 24/7 or late-closing one but did not come across this one. https://westburychemist.net/

Maybe toasters and gas hobs should be subject to taxes, given that they too produce particulate matter? Same goes for tyres on motor vehicles.

Three (unflashy) car windows smashed, all in a row, on Court Lane near the junction with LL a few weeks ago.

Dog Friendly East Dulwich in 2024 - What is/isn't
Nigello replied to LondonFermentation's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Leave your dog at home, please. It’s not going to enjoy it, at best it’ll endure it. If you’re blind, then of course bring your dog to the pub/cafe/office and expect lots of good wishes and respect, maybe even a treat for Rover, but if not, please don’t (or sit outside). Not everyone likes dogs and some are thoroughly frightened or allergic and to ignore this is solipsistic and self-centered. (I like dogs a lot but only in the home or the park.) -
If the local authorities did the job thoroughly then another parallel authority wouldn’t be needed.

Then speak to the headmaster or headmistress and ask them to monitor it. Also, CC Helen Hayes MP.

Parents can also get up earlier and/or let children take the bus or cycle or walk. It’s a choice, possibly hard to swallow, but still a choice.

? Dunstan’s is a school street so, quelle surprise, the usual suspects just sit on the DYLs on nearby roads instead, leaving a v short portion of Dunstan’s clear for a v short space of time. No care given to causing blind spots and hazardous obstructions just as long as little munchkin can get home in mum’s taxi. I’d like planters or trees in big pots placed on the DYLs. At least the school makes an effort now to deter the offenders by putting out portable bollards. I fear there’ll be an accident.

I’ve had them in my garden only the once - though that’s only when I’ve seen them. Is it only Niger seeds they’re into?

https://report.southwark.gov.uk It’s a good facility to report grot spots, broken tree branches, litter, fly tipping, dog dirt, etc. You can post anonymously if you prefer. It allows you to get graffiti removed from most places/buildings, even private property and cable/phone roadside cabinets.

Yeah, ok. Race to the bottom and victim blame at the same time. Public transit is a public space. Neutral behaviour should apply. Stink your own house out as much as you like but have the respect and decency to abstain from scoffing smelly scran for the short time you’re on the bus. Especially if you’re travelling free (ie. on the back of taxpayers and fare payers).

It’s a long time ago, agreed, but pets in the last 1/4 of the 20C didn’t get the same kind of healthcare they seem to today… Is it a bit of a swizz? Nobody wants a poorly pooch, etc. but the vet care plans, treatments and consultations seem to me to be of a cost that suggests that.

Or do they select an empty (or almost empty) big brown bin and then bung in the contents of all the little ones?

The water works mean long queues in both directions from GG to NX Road.

Cedar tree to be cut down Tulse Hill - help
Nigello replied to Jules-and-Boo's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It’s not. It’s a reasonable and rational assumption, as is pointing out it could also be a danger to wildlife and humans. Both are more likely than suggesting it’s just a council officer’s whim to destroy a fully healthy/non-hazardous tree. -
Cedar tree to be cut down Tulse Hill - help
Nigello replied to Jules-and-Boo's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Execution? For heaven’s sake, it’s a tree that’s very likely diseased and/or hazardous to humans. The council will replace it and there’s nothing at all stopping anyone from planting their own either. Go to the Wildlife Centre on Marsden Road and buy £3 treelets and plant away! Or grow them from pips/acorns etc. These are much better forms of action than typing something to send into the ether. -
Disabled badges being stolen from cars
Nigello replied to mlteenie's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Melanie Reid - tetraplegic writer - said in a recent piece that badges are given out too readily to people with non-physical disabilities (explaining that unlike a person with, say, ADHD or parent thereof, she absolutely cannot walk to a supermarket entrance from a standard parking space and needs the space up front in a way others don’t). I have great sympathy for her and would hope more badges be made available for those with the greatest need.
