  1. It’s not. It’s a reasonable and rational assumption, as is pointing out it could also be a danger to wildlife and humans. Both are more likely than suggesting it’s just a council officer’s whim to destroy a fully healthy/non-hazardous tree.
  2. Execution? For heaven’s sake, it’s a tree that’s very likely diseased and/or hazardous to humans. The council will replace it and there’s nothing at all stopping anyone from planting their own either. Go to the Wildlife Centre on Marsden Road and buy £3 treelets and plant away! Or grow them from pips/acorns etc. These are much better forms of action than typing something to send into the ether.
  3. Melanie Reid - tetraplegic writer - said in a recent piece that badges are given out too readily to people with non-physical disabilities (explaining that unlike a person with, say, ADHD or parent thereof, she absolutely cannot walk to a supermarket entrance from a standard parking space and needs the space up front in a way others don’t). I have great sympathy for her and would hope more badges be made available for those with the greatest need.
  4. Nah, not buying the harassed mummy (daddy/nanny) line. Saying thanks or even just nodding to signify gratefulness ought to be hardwired and reflexively automatic from childhood.
  5. It exists. It’s everywhere. People listening to music/having phone conversations on speaker on the bus, day-glo mummies and daddies on cycles on footpaths with the portable excuse of kiddywink on board/in sidecar, oafs who CBA to put their bibs back in. Don’t let them win!
  6. The council will plant new trees to compensate when it has to remove any. Trees are great but none can be left to rot or cause damage to other trees, buildings or living creatures. The tree department does a good job in Southwark, on the whole.
  7. Most dog owners/walkers let their animals off the lead but I’ve never seen any squirrel/crow/goose getting caught.
  8. https://limebike.typeform.com/CommunityReport?typeform-source=www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk#bike_plate_number=GLXQAZ where to go to report badly parked Limes.
  9. Bus lanes don’t all need to be 24/7. So much congestion and therefore pollution (and wasted money and time) is caused by blanket bans. It seems to me that those who impose the rules like to be seen as uncompromising rather than pragmatic in a mistaken belief that this will get the results they want. Opening up some lanes more of the time would help get the city moving.
  10. Don’t park illegally (= causing a hazard) and don’t get fined.
  11. With any luck this system will be abandoned.
  12. Indeed - Court Lane was never busy and is still wide with decent-width footpaths and large front gardens leading to often double glazed houses. It ought to be reopened to through traffic because those who live there already have three-ply protection against noise and pollution.
  13. I’m with J and B. Trees will be felled and replacements planted (and there’s nothing to stop any of us from doing the same). Homes of all sizes and types are needed. If you disagree then vote according to your principles.
  14. It doesn’t preclude picking up a few bits of litter for three minutes a day or slapping a coat of emulsion over graffiti. 🤷‍♂️
  15. Shopkeepers and retailers just CBA to do anything like clean up their exteriors/shutters, remove rubbish/leaves from their environs, etc. They just want your money. Vote with your feet or suggest they may benefit from spending a very small amount of time and effort being community minded.
  16. Good points Why not write or talk to the people you mention and see whether you can help make things better? (WHY?)
  17. It’s always going to be a problem because some people are selfish. If the poo is hard, just kick it swiftly into the gutter. There’s not much more to be done.
  18. Such facetiousness takes away from the validity of some of the things you say. Everyone is capable of acting more safely, pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and drivers. Everyone should do so. I’m mainly a pedestrian and want to see improvements for me (and wheelers) but that doesn’t stop me from facing facts and acknowledging that those who cross roads away from crossings, wear dark clothes at night/early morning, power-march while screen-staring etc. shouldn’t be pulled up on such behaviour.
  19. >>>>> BTW, there is plenty of evidence that people travelling by bicycle are much less likely to break the rules. Probably because you're more vulnerable on a bike. I’ve no car, no bike but a decent pair of eyes and a large minority of cyclists do break the rules. No lights, no bells, no stopping at lights/zebras, footpath riding are all very common and I’m not anti-cyclist or pro-car.
  20. It’s hard to deny that housing of all kinds is needed, and fast. If people want (not necessarily need) all manner of (non-essential) services then more space has to be given over to a variety of accommodation to help bridge the big gaps and that may mean reducing space between developments, building higher, etc. So, if you’re upset by the planned development then at the very least consider asking yourself whether you and your habits could possibly be contributing to it.
  21. https://londonist.com/london/transport/new-electric-buses-london-route-358 on Barry Rd This article says they’re only going to be used in Orpington, but maybe that’s changed since it was written.
  22. [email protected] write here and ask for an acknowledgment and a reply.
  23. Please tell them it’s not good enough. I emailed the head of leisure. Also, a man who approached me as I left the building quizzed me about the place. I told him the god and the bad, stressing the unnecessary booking system for swimming, and he told me he may be the new general manager. So, who knows? Maybe it will help bring about a change. Please do email the head of leisure and your councillor. I can’t see them agreeing with such a waste of opportunities to swim when they’re pushing the sport for all line so fervently. Councillor Catherine Rose cabinet member for neighbourhoods, leisure and parks your councillor can be found at WriteToThem. Yeah, which is bad enough, but people also book and then just CBA to turn up. It’s no way to operate a public facility.
  24. You have to book ahead, unfortunately. It’s an unnecessary legacy of the pandemic. I hope they amend this. Some special sessions should be bookable (OAP, disabled, single sex, etc.) but not general or lane swimming.
