  1. They were built at the end of WWII and were intended to be temporary, but they were solidly built and there was rapidly a waiting list for them. I am sorry that they are now boarded up and hope they are not going to be demolished.
  2. This might be related to the original railway station that was located in Camberwell and was replaced by the now East Dulwich station; there is a painting of the original station by Walter Sickert (?). I have seen the painting but can't now remember where or where it is currently held.
  3. Loquor means I speak.
  4. Get your mind out of the gutter! I am a very clean-living, if not downright boring, person because not only has Mr Right not shown his face yet but neither has Mr Alright For Now. Anyway, I have asked the engineers at work about sound insulation and they are very kindly conducting some research for me. I have been warned it will be expensive and I expect it to involve both floating ceilings and floating floors. I am starting to consider getting a cat but keep thinking of that sketch from 'Frasier', something about a cottage, a cat and calling it a life if memory serves.

  6. Does anyone know anything about Parkhill Properties, for example a correspondence address or the name of the managing director? I know it might not achieve a great deal in the short term but perhaps if someone sent a formal letter of complaint to Parkhill they may come to realise that they are causing bad feeling here. What does concern me is the silence and inaction of Southwark's Planning dept, Parkhill are not merely buying in ED they are also buying up parts of Camberwell High Street and if Southwark don't start paying attention they may find they end up with whole areas which do not fit with in their development policy.
  7. I am watching Comic Relief at the moment and thinking there but for the grace of God. How does everyone feel about having a Forum fundraising drive? I think we all ought to be able to contribute a decent amount.>:D
  8. I NEVER said that was the kind of noise!! Please, show some respect. It is just everyday noise, furniture being moved, things being dropped on the floor, and apparently despite my carpets my downstairs neighbour can hear me as well.
  9. Bexley Council offers the following advice: If foxes are digging or making an earth in your garden, discourage them at the first signs of activity. First make certain that the holes are not occupied. Do this by discouraging the fox with repellents soaked onto pieces of wood or rags placed in the holes and/or soaked onto 'sharp' (builders') sand around the entrance. After a few days lightly block the entrance with soil which can easily be pushed out if the earth is occupied. When you are certain that the holes are not occupied, fill with bricks or heavy materials that will be difficult to dig out. If you think you may have an established earth in your garden, or you suspect that the foxes may be suffering from disease, it may be advisable to seek advice from a private pest control company. Research has shown that non-toxic chemical repellents are sometimes effective in reducing nuisance from foxes when they are used correctly. Scent neutralisers can discourage foxes from fouling specific areas. All repellents must be renewed regularly, especially in hot weather and after heavy rain. 'Scoot' can be used to deter foxes from digging and fouling on lawns. It should be diluted and sprayed onto the lawn where the problem is occurring. 'Get Off My Garden' is a solid repellent and can be used to deter repeated digging or fouling in specific areas. It should be placed in the holes which foxes are digging, or in other areas to which foxes pay particular attention. 'Wash Off' is a scent neutraliser and can be used to discourage repeated fouling and urinating on hard surfaces by removing the fox's scent so that it cannot mark the area successfully. All repellents must be used according to the manufacturers' safety instructions. The repellents listed above are generally available in garden centres and hardware stores. The inclusion of these products on this site is for information only and is not intended as an endorsement or recommendation of them by Bexley Council. 10. ?9,000?! Ouch!
  11. I will ask the engineers/surveyors where I work, hopefully they will know.
  12. The police are definitely not interested, someone used my card last year to buy themselves an all singing all dancing bluetooth mobile phone. They forgot to change the default address for the card so it arrived at my house instead of theirs. I reported it to the bank, cancelled my card, and the bank reclaimed the fradulent payment. At the bank's request I reported it to the police and was told that their Fraud Squad would call me. To this day I have never heard a word from them, which is actually a breach of the Police Act but all too common.
  13. Hi Ko Could you ask your friend what the builders are proposing to use? I don't even know any product names to obtain quotes for.
  14. Hi Does anyone on this Forum know anything about sound insulation? I live in a converted Victorian house on the upper ground floor, my flat was created in the 1980s when there were very few rules about insulation and there is no insulation on my ceiling or under my floorboards. The result is that I can hear everything that my upstairs neighbours do, as they have laminate flooring (no lease to enforce) and my downstairs neighbours can hear everything that I do even though I have installed carpet and proper underlay. I did look at putting special tiles on my ceilings but a work colleague has subsequently told me that they are not designed for residential properties. Any advice gratefully received.:-$
  15. Hi LOVE The Sea Cow (so glad to see it back up and running) William Rose The EDD SMB Foods Northcross Greengrocers The retro sweet shop on Northcross Road (sorry, forgotten the name) Franklin's Mrs Robinson's (just for browsing, way too expensive) The picture framer's on Northcross Road (really good quality workmanship and a great range) A J Farmer's A-Z Express Dry Cleaners Fabric 501 (have you met Guneh? Fantastic bloke!) The Cheese Block Roullier & White (again just for browsing except at Christmas) WOULD LIKE Chener Books to be refurbished The freeholders of just about all the buildings on LL to be served with repair notices by LB Southwark (not holding my breath for this) All the empty commercial properties inc. the old fish and chips shop on Whateley Road to be brought back into use The art gallery on LL to sell something that 1. I like and 2. I can afford St Thomas More Hall to be reimagined - has anyone signed up for the ballroom dancing lessons there? A local cinema and theatre A good music shop An independent clothing shop HATE The state of the pavements and road surface from one end of LL to another The neglect of the Library end of LL and the Goose Green end and the area around the ED station The bookmakers Iceland Somerfield Budgens LB Southwark (how they achieved their CPA rating is a mystery, if ever a borough was crying out to be forcibly taken over by HMG .............) The gas showroom at the Library end The pathetic excuses for pharmacies/chemists which we have here The equally pathetic bakeries The beautician/massage parlour at the Library end which has always seemed to lack customers The state of The Plough The fast food places The police station (how did something so eye-wateringly ugly ever gain planning permission?) The gun shop (why is it here?) The motor spares/tyres shop - whatever it is, in the building with all the scaffolding along the top where new flats are being developed The dog excrement everywhere and the fact that every cat in the area regards gardens which contain pebbles as gigantic litter trays The bus drivers who behave as though the whole of LL is a race track The needlessly excessive amounts of street furniture The crappy ntl connection in East Dulwich that keeps blanking out, freezing, falling out of sync and pixillating!!!! The complete inability of ntl to fix the bloody problem!!!!
