  5. Thomas McCarthy, Ian Kennedy & Sarah Lloyd, Local Traditional Singers. The Goose Is Out! The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, Nunhead, London SE15 3BE. Friday 24 May, 7 pm. Advance Tickets are available from https://www.wegottickets.com/thegooseisout Thomas McCarthy came to the Goose for the first time to support Coope, Boyes & Simpson, and then did a stunning gig as a headliner in his own right! He returned to the Goose twice in 2016 ? in January as part of our Refugee Benefit Concert, and in November to headline at our final Ivy House concert of the year. We are delighted to be welcoming him back in 2019! And even more delighted that he has been awarded the Irish traditional music accolade of Singer of the Year at TG4?s Gradam Ceoil Award ceremony, to be held in Belfast in February 2019. Thomas is a singer from an Irish Traveller family in Birr, County Offaly. From a considerable dynasty of traditional singers, song-makers and musicians, Thomas grew up surrounded by the singing of his late mother, her father and aunts and uncles and now lives in London. Having spent his life learning the songs of his family, in 2008 Thomas sang publicly for the first time at the folk club at London?s Cecil Sharp House. By the following year, he had sung at the most prominent folk festivals and clubs in Ireland and England, appeared on BBC Radio, and has since shared a stage with many well-known performers including Lou Killen and The Copper Family and has won the praises of many other respected musicians besides. ?The greatest Irish traditional singer in fifty years? ? Joe Power, Conneries? Singing Club, Waterford Ian Kennedy and Sarah Lloyd will be well known to many (probably most!) of you as not only are they regular singers at our Singarounds and Thursday Club nights, but they have been staunch supporters of the Goose more or less since we began, and are often to be found on the door or at the ticket desk at our gigs. Also supporting Thomas will be some of the other local traditional singers who sing at our Singarounds. They are Kate Owen, Elliot Clifford-Coope and Jacken Elswyth who enthralled everyone at the Roberts, Scuse & McGuinness gig recently with her extraordinary banjo playing, tonight she will sing unaccompanied.

If you came to see our concert with Melrose Quartet in 2018, we are sure you will remember these three! We enjoyed their set so much that we have asked them back to headline a club night in their own right. Christina Alden, Alex Patterson and Noel Dashwood weave rich vocal harmonies, fiddle, dobro, guitar and mandolin around beautifully written original songs and melodies. Their music takes influence from folk traditions from both sides of the Atlantic with uplifting instrumentals and self-penned songs depicting tales of young travelers, sleepy seas and their affection for home. ★★★★ Songlines ? ?Obviously something of enormous promise? https://aldenpattersonanddashwood.com/

A Garland of May Songs? was released by Ear to the Ground Records on 28th April 2017. Lisa has steadily evolved her own distinctive voice. She?s toured the UK with her own band, but also in the company of James Yorkston, Sam Lee and Leafcutter John and also, as a special guest of Shirley Collins on her ?Lodestar? live shows. 10. Eliza Carthy & Dave Delarre + Clarke Camilleri + Brown Boots: The Goose Is Out! The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, SE15 3BE. Doors open 7pm. Tickets http://www.wegottickets.com/thegooseisout Eliza Carthy surely needs no introduction! Arguably, the most impressive and engaging performer of a generation. She has previously headlined at the Goose with Saul Rose and with dad Martin. Eliza is also the winner of an unrivaled seven BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. In 2003 she became the first traditional English musician to be nominated a BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music (for Anglicana). She has revitalised and made folk music relevant to new audiences and has captured the most hardened of dissenters with intelligent, charismatic and boundary-crossing performances. Dave Delarre, a fine player of stringed instruments and part of Eliza?s Wayward Band, he has also headlined at the Goose back in the day as part of Mawkin:Causley. Clarke Camilleri is a troubadour, songwriter and poet who is one of a new generation of folk who want to bring on the new with an appreciation of the old. Clarke sings with the past but writes for the present. He is also probably one of the youngest people in the country running a folk club! Brown Boots! is Will Allen on melodeon and Martin Clarke on fiddle. Their musical background is rooted in playing music for dancing, as well as gaining inspiration from playing with their many talented musical friends at festivals and pub sessions across the country. https://www.clarkecamilleri.co.uk/ http://www.brown-boots.co.uk/ Eliza & Dave Brown Boots! 11. Alasdair Roberts, Amble Skuse & David McGuinness + Jacken Elswyth + Sophie Crawford: The Goose Is Out! Ivy House, Fri 22 Feb. Doors open 7pm. Tickets available https://www.wegottickets.com/thegooseisout Tickets are also available in person from the Ivy House bar. 18 and over only. We are delighted to be hosting an inspired collaboration between Alasdair Roberts, electronic composer Amble Skuse, and early music pianist David McGuinness. For their tour dates, Alasdair, Amble and David will be presenting their album "What News" in its entirety ? and in all its variety, from the stirring opener 'The Dun Broon Bride' through the rollicking 'Johnny o' the Brine', the macabre and eerie 'Young Johnstone', the spare and tender 'Rosie Anderson' and 'Long A-Growing' to the near-overwhelming sonic maelstrom of 'Clerk Colven'. This will be a rare chance to experience an extraordinary collaboration, sure to appeal to aficionados of traditional song and experimental music alike. The collaboration has received much praise from the media and the folk world including Shirley Collins who described the trio's work as " Brilliant, bold and beautiful" There will be two great supports: Jacken Elswyth and Sophie Crawford, see more details below. Jacken Elswyth is a London-based banjo player exploring traditional tunes, extrapolations thereon, and improvisational pieces for clawhammer banjo. Drawing on old-time Appalachian playing alongside American Primitive guitarists and English folk revivalists, Jacken adds drone accompaniments, extended playing techniques, and elements of free playing to push at the edges of these styles and traditions. Sophie Crawford is a folk musician from East London. She performs traditional English folk music as well as her own songs. She has recently released her first album ?Silver Pin? with Oliver Coates.

  13. Dave Webber & Anni Fentiman : The Goose Is Out! The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, SE15 3BE. Doors open 7PM/?8 (pay as you enter, no advance booking) Dave and Anni joined forces in 1985, after spending many years around the folk club scene, in which time they featured on several albums made by other performers. Within a short time they teamed up with friends Charley Yarwood and his wife Cathy to form the acapella harmony group Beggars Velvet. The group were very soon in demand for clubs and festivals and recorded their only album, Lady of Autumn. They made two tours of the USA in 1990 and 1991 before they stopped performing together in 1993 after eight very successful and happy years. Since then Dave and Anni have continued to work as a duo, making their duo debut on stage at the Eisteddfod Festival in Dartmouth Massachusetts in 1993 to begin a very successful career as a harmony duo, working largely acapella and featuring mainly traditional and traditional idiom material. They have worked extensively in the UK and the USA to much acclaim and now have five albums of their own to set alongside the Beggars Velvet recording, which is still in demand after many pressings. ?It?s a magical experience whenever these two fine singers put their voices together. As for their harmonies, they are breathtaking? ? Warwick Folk Festival ?If you love traditional music delivered with strength, clarity and simplicity, you certainly won?t be disappointed with this duo? ? Cornwall Folk Festival The enthusiasm of these two fine singers for traditional and traditional style songs, comes through hot and strong, whether singing together or solo ? National Folk Music Festival
