    mothballed!

Do they really deter cats? Where exactly do you put them and how often do they need changing? Do they need to stay dry? There are 3 cats who are constantly taking ownership of my garden and it doesn't help that my daughter has a major cat phobia so won't go outside if they are around. Be great to find a solution.
  2. Hmmm well I really only need it for our work shirts so perhaps it's not the thing. Would still like an opinion of someone who has one though, as I don't think my OH is that bothered about his shirts having the perfect "pressed" look.
  3. I recently saw an assistant in clothes shop whizzing thru the "ironing" at a rate of knots with a garment steamer. I'm very tempted to buy one but am wondering if the ones sold for domestic use are any good. Does anyone have one? I'm thinking of something like this http://www.scottsofstow.co.uk/Garment-Steamer/Product1_22051_-1_17958_10551
  4. Isn't one of the purposes of planning permission to give interested parties the opportunity to voice their concerns prior to work being undertaken? Sounds like you could have come to some agreement with yr neighbour regarding the upkeep. What a ridiculous shame they didn't follow procedure. I don't really understand the urgency to bypass this step either!
  5. We found a poetry book from the 1800's in our loft with some handwritten inscriptions and from this, we've managed to trace some history of a family that moved into our house in 1911. The book isn't worth much but is in lovely condition and might be of sentimental value to any remaining family members. We have traced as far as a Harold Jahrns and Arthur Jahrns who died 1970 and 1984 respectively, both of whom moved into our house in 1911, along with 5 other family members (in a 2 bedroom house!) We haven't got time to do anymore digging but as Jahrns is quite an unusual surname, I thought it worth asking here if anyone knows of anyone of that name in the area.
  6. My daughter has just been on a course of Augmentin which she positively lapped up (although I have no idea whether you have different ABs for different things). This was for chest infection.
  7. Crystal palace road around Heber area has seemed really dark lately and me and my daughter both took a tumble this evening when I went down on my ankle in a tree planter area. Am now wearing an ankle support and hoping overnight rest will fix it. I didn't notice the edge it was so dark grumble grumble.
  8. Still hoping to make this if wee-damz isn't too exhausted from her morning party (she's got more parties in her diary than I have this month!)
  9. My 3yo started at Gumboots in September after being with her CM from 7 months old. She loves it there and it was just what she needed to make the next step in development. The staff are really lovely, the atmosphere is very relaxed and it never seems busy. Lots of space inside and out. There are a lot more girls than boys in the pre-school room at the moment which is great for my daughter who has made lots of girl friends (which is something she kept asking for before she started there). The kids (boys and girls) are really friendly and it's so lovely when they all come up to you when you arrive to pick up, introducing themselves to you and shouting out "your mums here!". Funny. My daughter is there all week except Thursday's. Happy to meet up on a Thursday if you like, although I'm sure your daughter will be fine regardless. Does your daughter have a scooter? Mine is really very cautious with hers and hasn't quite got to grips with it so I'd like to take her out with someone who can show her what to do!
  10. BB100 thanks. I hadn't even thought of space issues and around here it's obviously very relevant. As for finding 6 schools, it seems impossible as we only have 2 near us (well within assumed catchment area)
  11. This is useful (I didn't write it!): POINTS TO REMEMBER WHEN READING WITH YOUR CHILD Attitude/Approach ? Primary object is interest and enjoyment ? Focus on meaning of reading ? No pressure, parental anxiety filters through to your child ? Regular pauses to laugh, enjoy repetition, talk about the story ? Constant praise and encouragement even for the smallest achievement ? Boost confidence, e.g. ?I like the way you worked out what that says? ? Focus on what they can do rather than what they can?t ? Show that you are enjoying yourself ? Stop if you are losing patience ? Don?t make comparisons with other children ? Respond to your child?s mood ? If your child is not enjoying a book, change it Time ? Set aside the same time daily when your child is most responsive ? Young children like routine - reassuring ? 15 minutes is usually long enough ? Bite-size sessions rather than blitz! ? If tired, miss a day out ? Be aware when a child has had enough ? Give undivided attention Place ? Away from any other distractions ? Try not to read in front of siblings who can already read ? Make books accessible to the children ? Categorize books in the home, e.g. ?Ones I can read on my own? ?Need some help? ?Favourites? ? Sit comfortably and close to each other Before Reading a Book ? Look at front cover and title and predict what book might be about ? Flick through the text, looking at pictures to generate vocabulary ? Discuss setting, characters, unusual language ? Identify new words with significance ? Ask questions prior to reading to direct attention When Your Child Gets Stuck ? Give child a chance to work out the word, don?t jump in as soon as he/she pauses ? Try not to make comments like ?You should know that?, or ?You had it on the last page? ? Offer a range of strategies they might use to read an unknown word, e.g. phonic, picture clue, context, syntax ? If you read a word, explain how it was worked out Correcting Mistakes ? Mistakes tell you a lot about a child?s difficulties ? If mistake retains the sense of the passage, don?t correct ? Give child an opportunity to self-correct ? Wait until a natural break or the end of a sentence ? Try not to use negative language ? Use language like ?Are you sure that?s what it says?? ?Did that make sense?? After Reading a Book ? Discuss the book, invite a personal response, e.g. ?Which bit did you like best?? ?How do you think...felt when...happened?? ? Encourage child to be critical and reflect on reading ? Assess child?s understanding of what they read ? Follow up activities, e.g. illustrate part of the story retell story act out ? Retell the sequence of events ? Discuss ideas ?between the lines?, such as why things happened as they did
  12. deleting my post as I have just checked my "facts" regarding triangle symbols and they were totally wrong! although this page is useful... http://www.recyclenow.com/why_recycling_matters/recycling_symbols.html
  13. A couple of weeks ago I watched a refuse collector pick up a big brown bin and turn it upside-down on top of another big brown bin to empty its measly content of 2 bags of food waste. He did this all down the street and I realised why the bins are now returned in such a careless way, they must be exhausted! When I got home I ordered one of the smaller brown bins and put my big brown bin in my back garden. Oh and regarding the window envelopes, when I checked the southwark website a few weeks ago they had a lot of conflicting info on there about various items including window envelopes where one page suggests you can recycle them and another page states you can't. So do what you want I say!
  14. I'm not sure if mine is looking for more work but considering you live a stones throw from me, it might be worth asking her (you bought my travel cot). PM me if you want more details

I queried this by email and the lady confirmed that it would definitely be Tuesday. And now you're saying Monday! I have to take time off work to come so please can someone categorically confirm that it IS Tuesday!
  16. Hi new mother. I wanted the same as you for my daughter (for pretty much the same reasons - are you my sister?!) and chose DBS and couldn't be happier.
  17. I emailed them on the address above (thanks Peckham native) and they responded almost straightaway. Application received but invalid. Builder seems to think it's because the plans are submitted online but the payment has to be submitted by post and often the planning office don't tally the things up so mark the application as invalid.
  18. Thanks everyone. I'm a bit concerned now! No answer from the phone numbers but have emailed so will hopefully get a reply soon
  19. No, but it was submitted by my builder so maybe it would be sent to him. Should we be expecting some sort of notification of receipt from them then? Did yours appear on the website shortly after sending it in?
  20. Are you referring to the approval date or the date it was uploaded to the website? I would just feel happier if I could see it. At the moment I'm wondering if they've actually received it from my builder
  21. Does anyone know how long it takes for Southwark to upload planning applications? And whether they upload all of them or just some? Ours was submitted over a month ago and there's no sign of it, starting to get tetchy that it won't be approved before the work is scheduled to start. I'm referring to this search tool http://planningonline.southwarksites.com/planningonline2/
  22. Sainsburys sell the canister so you can blow your own
  23. It's a brilliant tool. I've been using it for the past few weeks (thanks to OP for sharing) and it saves me time and stress in the morning as I know exactly when to leave the house. No more running for me! Love it
  24. They knocked on my door earlier, I say "knocked" more BANG BANG BANG! I was bathing my daughter and thought it was an emergency so ran down and opened the door. When I realised it wasn't an emergency and explained I was bathing my daughter so had to go, they didn't appear to have any comprehension of the urgency of that situation and just kept pushing me about whether I had loft insulation or not. None of your bloody business! was my final retort. I know door to door is a shit job but geez they make my blood boil.
  25. That sounds good to me x
