They might be reacting to local cats stalking nests although there's usually a tone of distress, rather than birdsong.

Getting buildings insurance for your home in East Dulwich
Ruskin replied to indiepanda's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
We once had a renewal that was double that of the previous year. We obviously questioned it and their answer was that there were old earthworks (mines) near here and hence a risk of movement (or sinkholes, I imagine!). I did some research and realised building insurers use geological data to determine risk. The data showed that somehow, our property in SE24 was sitting on rock (can't remember which) which was "unstable". Our adjoining neighbour and two doors away apparently has different bed rock and vastly lower premiums. We eventually decided our insurer was using the wrong rock data but they wouldn't budge when I told them I could find no evidence of old mines beneath SE24 - so we walked away from renewing and went elsewhere. It's not been an issue again. -
I answered the door to him in HH though I can't remember what night it was. Anyway, as unlikely as it was to be touting for winder business, he was pleasant enough and definitely not aggressive. In fact, he looked pretty presentable and if he was casing the property, he'd be the last one I suspected - and I suspect EVERYONE who comes a knockin'.

You may be right Sidhue. I also speculate because surely if there's traffic turning into Edgar Kail Way from either direction, a red pedestrian light would stack up the traffic into the junction - especially the yellow box?

Agreed, the police need this. The letter's contents could become evidence should someone take matters into their own hands.

I've just had a near-miss on Herne Hill where a wide BMW 4x4 undertook me in the bus lane just as oncoming traffic coming at me head-on while overtaking a bus. I see this a lot on HH and Denmark Hill where drivers simply cannot follow a slower vehicle, putting their foot down on the inside, regardless of whether others are doing the 20mph limit or not. One day there's going to be a nasty incident on these roads. I do think however, that 20mph is a very low limit on those roads and it does actually exacerbate dangerous driving as above. Seething!

The text alert I got from Thames Water on the 22nd said: "We are carrying out emergency repair work in your area today which may lead to low pressure / no water. We're really sorry. We're fixing it as quickly as we can."

Heber Road - dangerous wall - please avoid
Ruskin replied to Awkward Knee's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
What's the construction industry's code of H&S where they encourage workers to not ignore a dangerous item on site, something like 'Don't Walk By'? By the sounds of it, that's exactly what they're doing. Well done OP. -
New fixed bus lane camera, Dog Kennel Hill
Ruskin replied to kford's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
natty01295 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > PHOTO - That's not dog kennel hill The poster didn't mean it was GKH - rather an example of a semi-hidden camera. Anyway, agree with Passiflora. It's really not hard to do your left at the very top opposite the school. -
Great tip, thanks Applespider.

I wonder if this is also why they've planted new cameras on DKH?
-
Well whether there's a mounted camera there or not, the line's there stating it's a bus lane and it irritates me when drivers hop over the line 30yds from the feeder arrow then undertake me sitting in the right-hand lane, patiently indicating left - and who then refuse to give way when I want to move over as I'm supposed to. And then you bleat about a PCN when you thought you'd got away with it. We all know there's little room to get over left but when the law says don't do it (whether you think its a crap law, or not) - don't do it.

Followed and chased by man into Denmark Hill Station
Ruskin replied to Catherine W's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thanks for this warning. I shall keep an eye out. -
We've also been with Insurance4carhire though also never had to claim.

Thanks, Turtle. Do the owners do Twitter etc., I wonder? I know that when the little dog from the florists outside Herne Hill station went missing a few years ago, there was a very rapid/active social media campaign. Unfortunately (as far as I know), the dog was never found but it spread the word very quickly. Three weeks is a long time though.

I'm wondering though if the owners had them chipped? Given the time now, it's likely that they weren't.

We've just been reading the flyers on Lordship Lane about the theft of a Streatham dog walker's van with dogs inside which were then unceremoniously dumped in the Sydenham area. Does anyone know if the animals were recovered as the dog on the poster was said to be nervous and probably unable to find its way home. Thanks.

Access to the forum using the new BT Hub/Router
Ruskin replied to Administrator's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Well I'm using a BT hub but am wondering what the difference is with the new one and why that should render forums like this inaccessible? -
Surely they should be reported anyway, not because it's 'in the news at the moment', but because it's plain wrong.

It'll be interesting eventually to see how Southwark and Lambeth folk voted. So far, it looks like it's Remain.

*Googles the word merfolk* Actually, no.

We would love to have been given a service with Virgin. They installed the cable (incl under the floorboards) and THEN decided that the cable couldn't be brought to the house at all - despite neighbours 150m up the road already subscribing. So we felt we had to go with BT. We get drops in speed after 6.00pm and sometimes I have to reset the router during the day.
