Hi E-P, i was a TV buyer until recently, when HD is transmitted over freeview from 2012 it will require 4 freeview channels to be taken off the air for every 1 HD. There are currently just 4 Freeview HD channels planned. 2 BBC, 1 ITV and 1 other for open market pitch 9highest bidder). Freeview HD will never be able to carry anything like the amount of HD channels Freesat HD/ sky hd due to frequency width restrictions. as you say you will also need a new tuner as it will be transmitted in a different formet (mpeg4 i think). Some Tv s currently offer integrated freesat tuners (eg panasonic) but it is much cheaper to buy the version without integrated tuner and buy the tuner box separately. HD ready tvs with tv tuners in (freeview) cannot show the hd freeview (2012...) but im sure there will be some available soon as the government only decided to do freview HD last month. HD TVs also upscale standard definition pictures, which does improve standard definition pictures. HD is not a noticable improvement on SD screens unless the screen is above 32" technology always changes so i dont think the customer has the right to feel aggrieved that new better standards are adopted when they a become available.. have funn!B) (&excuse all the type-o's)

Well, having gone to university in 1998 was one of the first to pay fee's- former generations paid no fee's and got a free non-repayable grant.. Every month i am charged 10% on most of my gross (not net) wages in compulsory repayments. This is a massive amount and i have already been paying for 6 years. The Labour government drove this through. I dont think elder people realise fully how the burden of education has been pushed back on the young, as will be the cost of caring for the old in the coming few years. - Maybe the generation above me have had it slightly too good and run us dry. Big issue, not enough said. Yes im better off, but were it not for the above id be a lot happier with the Blair Year's..

One day my boss had just had a new 50" plasma ddelivvered to his office. we kept the box in our office for the day to check the screen worked ok. after 3-4 hours i said, "i bet i could fit in that box" (being up for a challenge) i concocted the plan to get a guy from the office taken away for 2 minutes while i hid in the box. out he goes, lead by a co-conspirator. i hide in the box. he doesnt come back for 3 mins. then,, im hid in the box and the MD comes in the office. I keep quiet for 5 mins, starting to get very hot inside it. 10 minutes pass, the mds setteld in for a chat toi the graphic designer and no sin of my co-conspirator. 15 minutes later, with md still sat in the room talking through adverts text, my co-conspirator comes back in the room, lifts a flap to the box, and braisenly says "alright Will, what you doin' in the box". yes, i nearly died. -

Ok, on my second visit to Locale (see my previous post...).... It was fantastic service and food! Following my last visit i filled in their online feedback form and the manager offerred a free bottle of wine if i tried them again. I didnt accept the free wine but did try again:- Went last night and had really great Pizza! The service was spot on (different staff to last time) and genuinely friendly. It was like they had actually addressed the point i raised with them on my first visit and turned into exactly the great place i wanted round the corner! i now change my score to 86%. Well done Locale!, or perhaps: locale ben cotto Will -

HDTV is amazing , but if youve never seen it, you wont know your missing anything. BVest way to get HD box (box which can decode high definition satellitle pictures) iS on Freessat HD. HD will be availble on terrestrial freeview in 2010 but you will need a new freeview box to get that. see my post re buying a new tv advice in the lounge Will

Hi there SST, im a TV buyer for a retailer. LCD will be brighter than plasma but it is less able to show a wide variation of dark and bright on the screen at the same time, thus darker colours appear 1 tone, when plasma can reproduce them far more lifelike in the many different tones as they were intended (eg the black bars on films appear grey on lcd, but black on a plasma, same with all other colours on the screen) re contrast ratio, these are largely meaningless as the measure is so subjective, infact from the next generation of screens most manufacturers will drop the measurement after ***** manufacturer (in some peoples eyes) discredited it by quoting one of their screens at 500,000:1 If you absolutely must put your screen in direct sunlight then yes, the LCD would be best as it will go brighter, but if you want the best picture (lifelike, many colour tones, less motion blur) then go for a quality plasma like a Pioneer PDPD428XD or any Pansonic. A Palsma will function nearly aswell as LCD in bright direct sunlight. Sony screens are good but Samsung is the market leader and some sonys (all until recently) were rebadged Sasmung's. The model you list is a good model but check if the new 4000 model is available in 46" yet. Samsung make some excellent screens at that size and are worth considering. A 46" screen is very large and you will need an exceptionally large lounge for it to not dominate. Consider you will need to be at least 4 meters away from the screen in order to not be able to see individual pixels (undesirable). Screens are available online but willbe difficult to return if you have any problems. Much better to investigate online, go to a good store (john lewis/sevenoaks sound & vision etc) and get specific advice , armed with a web price for them to try to get close to. Plasma screens cost more per " than LCD. Panasonic now do a (TH42/46/50 pz81) model with a freesat hd tuer, which recieves high definition freeview through your sattelitle dish. screens come in high def (720p) and full high def (1080p). Very little content is available in 1080p and the difference is not that significant, so full HD is a "nice to have" feature, not essential. I could go on forever but dont want to confuse with too much info.. hope that helps. If unsure my view: Plasma will by far and away produce the best most lifelike picture. LCD will be cheaper, and go brighter 9if you feel that is desirable) have fun Will dex
