  1. Thanks ruffers/DF. Had thought of there, but presumed probably they wouldn't actually sell them as would want to repair the shoes themselves and the shoes are just an old comfy pair of moccasins not really worth shelling out big bucks on as might as well buy new, hence looking to do DIY. Worth a try though if no other suggestions.
  2. To all the lovely beautiful ladies of ED, who received roses and various other gifts, I say I hope you had a lovely day and thoroughly enjoyed yourselves. To all the ugly fat birds of ED, who possibly missed out, I say don't worry, be happy, it's less than two weeks to shrove tuesday !!!!
  3. How about organising a self-help litter pick with other parents from the nursery (assuming it's not industrial mess).
  4. Anyone know where I could purchase, in ED or relatively nearby, those DIY stick-on shoe soles that used to be sold in shops such as Woolies years ago? Is such a product still available? Thanks.
  5. Did anyone see the This Week programme last night. Had the (alleged) comedian Andy Parsons doing the "round up of the week" from East Dulwich Road, just outside Jaflong restaurant. The item then cut away to a park setting. Didn't seem to be nearby Goose Green as to much greenery, but possibly The Gardens? Wondered why it was filmed here.Is he yet another unfunny comedian residing in ED (thinking Richard Ayoade etc).
  6. RH,had a neighbour in our village up here a few years ago whose car was hit by a drunk driver, duly arrested, charged and convicted. Luckily, the drunk driver's insurance actually paid out the neighbour, who had informed his own insurance company of the incident. This is the back of beyond where nothing ever happens, so is extremely unlikely to occur again. When he in turn went to renew, his premium had gone up because, he was informed upon asking, that he had been involved in an accident and statistics made it more likely that he would be involved again!! This neighbour had never made a claim in thirty years of driving. There is of course nothing that can really be done about instances like this because, as we all know, you must have car insurance by law, and therefore companies can do what they like. Another example of some of the nonsense surrounding car insurance happened to me. A few years back, I had completely forgotten to renew my insurance by about a week. I rang the company (L.V.), who informed me my renewal quote was now obsolete as I had not "continually insured". Clearly,I needed insurance immediately so asked for another quote, thinking it would go up by whatever percentage. All details were exactly the same (car make, occupation, etc) and the new quote came back at ?175 (as opposed to ?250 renewal), a saving of 30%. Just goes to show, doesn't it. Meant to add, the reason given for this cheaper premium......because I was "a new customer" and entitled to an introductory discount.
  7. Great post, intexasatthemoment. DF, I think there was also a shoe shop called Ravels back in the 70's.(even 80's?). Louisa, the record shop was a branch (or at least associated with) Folletts in L.L. near Goose Green. The "old fashioned J. Sainsbury's counter service shop", was that called David Greig's, like the one on L.L.?
  8. Fascinating item on BBC local news a few minutes ago (not strictly ED) about Rye Lane and Khans Bargains shop having uncovered a vaulted art-deco style ceiling during renovations. Apparently the building used to be a department store called Holdrons back in the 40's/50's. Can't say I ever remember my parents or grandparents mentioning the store. Jones & Higgins, yes, further down (I remember it myself) but never Holdrons. The news item also stated that Rye Lane used to be known as "the Oxford Street of south London" !!
  9. Why, ruffers, don't you believe that Bournemouth is a decent area? Perhaps, on reflection, using a different adjective such as "serene" or "tranquil" might have been more appropriate I'll grant you, but the generic point remains that this sort of behaviour is spreading everywhere.
  10. We have just got back from Bournemouth and this last weekend (Friday) as we passed the local Boots you could not help but notice how crowded the shop was, with people trying to force their way through the entrance doors when it seemed impossible to do so due to people inside. We later found out that it was a "flash sale" of Xmas gifts, with 70% off, this mostly being toiletries sets. We were told of people grabbing hoards of stuff, pushing and shoving, and staff, what they themselves termed, being assaulted by shoppers shoving them out of the way when they tried to restore some sort of order. Has it really come to this, that in decent areas like Bournemouth people have to fight over soap. Have seen the social media reports from elsewhere and can't imagine how bad it was in large city centre shops. Anyone experience it personally?
  11. It's fabulous that there are so many species of birds in London now. Beats just having sparrows and pigeons, which is how it seemed to be years ago.

Well done for your TRUE neighbourly spirit.
  13. Lynne, By a strange coincidence (with you mentioning them), I have seen Sainsbury's staff carry out the practice of marking down food at the end of the day and handing it to colleagues (the example I observed was meat), didn't really cause any "rational rage"in me, though!! I just thought good for them, a little perk of the job.

  16. to that font of all knowledge, rendellharris.
  17. Think the Police service dodged a bullet there. Worrying indeed, that they might have been interested in having you on board. Then again, entrance standards have declined quite dramatically in recent years. I'll sound the huge sigh of relief on behalf of police officers all over the country.
  18. Please do give it a rest before the thread goes completely off( a very important) subject. Mugging is a colloquialism/ vernacular term. Robbery is a legal definition/term. Never known anyone charged with "mugging" another.
  19. malumbu, never mind being able to light fires, me thinks some have already learnt how to type.........
  20. Wrong....it's a ROBBERY as stated by Beulah
  21. Having had to endure X-Factor week in week out for approx 165 years, with barely any Saturday nights out during that time, Mrs. adonirum declared a few months ago "This is c**p this year", and promptly stopped watching. Believe you me, that really is a yardstick with which to measure it, so yes, it must/has to be !! (As usual, not seen it myself).
  22. When all's said and done, the roundabout has been there since time immemorial so the problem can't actually be it per se nor vehicles per se. Buses have also run along this route forever. It is clearly down to selfish, self-centred individuals, displaying the "me first and to hell with everyone else" attitude to life.
  23. Forgot about Range Rovers and Porsches, Jeremy, and I am getting on a bit now.
