  1. Its the people riding Penny Farthings that I don't trust. Not only is it a fixed gear, but it takes ages to climb up and down on to them. Ban Them! Ban Them! If I Don't Understand Gear Inches, Ban Them!
  2. "The riders are not motivated to stop at lights or zebra crossings as they lose momentum" Surely that applies to all bikes, and also to cars in my experience.
  3. Hmm, I had told myself not to post again on this thread as we've wandered into a broader topic - maybe it's a Drawing Room item instead... anyway, lies, damn lies and statistics etc. All stats taken out of context can become meaningless, but did you read the Comres research findings? It clarifies that they're being targeted specifically for their disability; not because they take their children to pubs / aren't famous enough in sainsbury's, occasionally enjoy a veggie sausage, or chose Nov 6th to set off some fireworks, all of which they may or may not do. The anonymous quotes as part of the report summary include: ?I have had people shouting abuse in the street, like ?scrounger?. I have been attacked by a group of teenagers, who attempted to kick my stick away and knock me down. This happened in a busy shopping area and no one offered to help me afterwards..? ?MS is sometimes invisible. I have had a cab driver yell at me for some time in front of my four-year-old for parking my car (in a disabled bay) legally whilst displaying my blue badge in front of the bank.? ?I have been called scrounger, parasite, and a waste of space. My personal assistant was spat at for helping me recently in a local shop.? ?I've been called names in the street and told to "stop faking and get a f***ing job" while struggling to transfer to my wheelchair from the car.? ?I can walk although it is always with great pain and difficulty. I take a wheelchair with me most places and I am treated so much differently in a wheelchair. When I do get out of the wheelchair and walk a little way, I have been accused of faking it and being lazy. Because on the outside I look healthy and "normal" people expect me to be healthy and normal.? I'm off on holiday. I hope the person mentioned in the original post is back out enjoying the park.

Fair point HelloSailor; it's a bit Medical Model / Social Model I suppose. So apologies to Saffron. I'd spent a day doing person centred planning interviews. Anyway, I hope the original person who is the topic of this thread gets the support and confidence they need to enjoy the park, and her dog, and walking.

The Scope report here; http://www.scope.org.uk/news/paralympics-attitudes-survey cites 47% said people?s attitudes towards them have got worse over the past year (May 2011: 37%) 66% of disabled people say that they have experienced aggression, hostility or name calling (May 2011: 41%) And Saffron, did you really use the phrase 'mentally retarded', are you American or Ricky Gervais?

  7. What on earth do the riots have to do with small pop up restaurants? There are lots of incubator / free rent offers for new businesses in Granville Arcade, those who have been there for years are now facing additional costs and rent increases.
  8. Sorry for tempting fate with the weather comment...
  9. But last year was rainy for lots of the month - apart from the last 24 hours the ground is pretty parched. The Muddy Hell event at the velodrome last week had to make the ground muddier in certain places to cope with the dry weather. And the Sports Ground event wasn't that crowded on the other side of the bonfire last year - people chose to congregate closer to the bars etc. rather than to spread into the field. Either way, I'll be in Brockwell Park.
  10. I don't really want to divert this thread too far, but this might be some interesting reading: "Domestic violence is often conceptualised as an ?adult? issue, something that happens between adults who are in, or have been, in an intimate relationship and research has tended to focus more on these relationships. In actual fact, adolescents experience similar levels of domestic violence as adults. It is also clear that domestic violence is still somewhat of a ?hidden? issue in our society; however, it is even more so for teenagers." From: http://www.avaproject.org.uk/media/54353/policy%20briefing%20on%20teenage%20relationship%20abuse.doc but there are other Southwark specific DV surveys.

A domestic situation? DV isn't based on bricks and mortar and a mortgage.
  12. At the junction of Inverton and Bellwood Roads?
  13. Having the number that's stamped on the bottom bracket helps...
  14. They'll end up either on gumtree / ebay or at boot fairs (most likely the Nine Elms one in your case), brick lane etc. Or ridden around by kids. You can watch this slightly depressing site: bikeshd.co.uk/ and see whether it turns up
  15. Only up to 12mph though. They offer little protection beyond that. The two serious accidents where cyclists were knocked over by a bus and a lorry in London yesterday (Aldwych and Vauxhall respectively) incurred more injury to the cyclists legs and torso than a head. (gah, I've entered a helmet thread!)
  16. I've got a three day free membership pass if anyone wants it? I won it (as mentioned by another poster above). I was told to go and collect it at Brockwell Lido, and was overjoyed at the idea that I could use the lido and the gym there for three days. Alas not. I live closer to the lido than ED, so if anyone wants to take it from me, I'd be more than happy. Edit - Now taken.
  17. It seems like the law courts don't agree with you James! http://www.civilsociety.co.uk/finance/news/content/8194/london_charities_win_judicial_review_against_10m_funding_cut London charities have won a judicial review challenge against London Council?s decision to cut its London Boroughs Grant Scheme by 63.5 per cent. The judge held that London Councils? consultation process was flawed and that they had failed to meet their statutory equality duties. He quashed all the funding cut decisions for the 200 plus projects
  18. Given that today saw Eric Pickles launch the localism bill, with a distinct aim of getting LA's to shared back office services (such as grant making), I thought it might be a timely bump to ask Cllr Barber to respond to the last post.
  19. Ah, but a pedant would point out the intrinsic difference between grass court polo (of which there's about ten very old, but very lovely Allin grass polo bikes at Herne Hill) and Hard Court polo! Mostly the size of the pitch, bikes ridden on, technique, speed etc. Oh and hello all you fgss rabble!
  20. James you fall at the slightest hurdle don't you? Are you honestly suggesting that grant funding should be based on populist opinion? If that was the case, the majority of funding would go to Battersea Dogs Home, a Donkey Sanctuary and Hospital Appeals for machines that go Ping. The removal of this 'bureaucratic' funder* means, as Bellenden Belle has carefully pointed out, that there is one fewer pan London funding body, and that those LA's who are electing to continue to use the allocated budget to fund organisations or projects in the Third Sector, will have to set up duplicate funding and monitoring systems. Not exactly cheap. *It's bureaucratic because of the competing demands of the publicly elected members who get to decide where the funding goes.
  21. GLA isn't a funding body is it? It's not set up to fund organisations or give grants. London Councils funded often difficult and unpopular work. Whilst they were a bit bureaucratic they did at least understand the work that they wanted to fund.
  22. Perhaps one of the worst attempts at trolling I've seen for a while!
  23. Because Eater, Dulwich Estates will not sign a lease longer than a rolling 2 years. Which means that VLC and local groups find it nigh on impossible to fundraise for any capital works, as the length of tenure is too short. The current surfacing is getting old, the covered stand is in a state of disrepair and can't be used any more, and the bleaker seats are getting old. The amount of voluntary hours that are put into the HH Velodrome to make sure that it's regularly open and accessible to both young children riding mountain bikes, or on track, to professionals using it on open meets is incredible.
  24. Just up the road to what was the Indian restaurant.
  25. http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/file.php?9,file=14150 Not strictly pram related, but having just bought these plant pots off a very kind ED Forum member, on Saturday. I left them slightly hidden in my front drive on Solway Road, alas not hidden enough, as they were pinched last night. If anyone has spotted Bill and Ben running around with them, would you let me know? Many thanks
