  1. Well I did warn you that I was being a bit glib!
  2. Huguenot Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The majority of journeys in London do not require > u-turns, five passengers, wheelchair access Forgive me for being a bit glib, but surely if you're a wheel chair user, every journey requires wheel chair access. And are you suggesting that you can't pass the knowledge without being from an Essex cartel?
  3. But you recognise that black cabs are regulated and seen by TFL / State as a formal part of the public transport system?
  4. Apart from the fact that JG has been filmed in one of his cabs instructing the driver to break the law and use the bus lane. AL have had negative press in at least 4 broadsheet papers and their apps are being slated on iTunes etc. I don't think it's particularly good publicity if you're the chair of a taxi firm who still thinks that 'road tax' exists. It doesn't give a good impression of his understanding of his outgoings does it? Nor that his drivers aren't responsible for the safety of other road users. Nor that he's allowed to take responsibility and cover liability for his drivers breaking the law, which was the crux of the High Court decision. Do you really want an additional 60,000 mini cabs in the bus lanes?

There is no difference. > Except in price, of course. > But that's the point. That price is set and managed by TFL. A private hire company such as AL (other cab companies are freely available) can set their own pricing according to their whim and business model. Which is why black cabs are defined as 'part of the public transport system'. You pay for a bus at a set TFL managed price, you pay for a black cab in the same way. There's nothing stopping AL from setting their own prices to make more profit to cover the loss of income of not being allowed in the bus lane. In fact they do with waiting and loading charges. > Now if you are arguing that black cabs (and by > extension, minicabs) not be allowed in bus lanes > at all, then I wouldn't disagree. How would black cabs pick up fares when you're stood on a bus lane? As for the DKH example of why cyclists shouldn't be allowed in bus lanes - what you're suggesting is that a slower moving road user is put in the right hand lane, still obstructing cars, and also encouraging buses to undertake them. Doesn't sound very sensible to me. Replace bicycle with 'horse' or mobility scooter...
  6. Loz Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > He's right though. Why should black cabs be > allowed in bus lanes and minicabs not? Either all > or none. Because black cabs are a formal, regulated and trained part of the public transport system overseen by TFL, and unlike AL are accessible to disabled people? AL is a private enterprise encouraging 3500 staff to break the law and potentially endanger other more vulnerable road users.
  7. EG, aside from Tynan paste on their door, you could try Southwark Mediation Service http://www.southwarkmediation.co.uk/ If they haven't had their budget cut. Best route is as you've described though - keep a log, and get your neighbours involved. Who's your local councillor; can you badger them by twitter/phone every time it happens?
  8. Or turn up at the boot fair in Vauxhall.. or you could try browsing http://bikeshd.co.uk/
  9. 0/10 for a poor trolling attempt.
  10. Can't he be persuaded to buy a bike rack and hang them off the wall/ceiling? That removes them from being an obstruction in the hallway and you're all friends again? ETA: ah Twirly beat me to it. There are ones that suspend off the ceiling too, if there's sufficient height; which clears up all the floor space and stops you banging into things.
  11. Well Cumberbatch wants to become a Fassbender, so is less likely to do British telly in favour of Hollywood $. There were an amusing amount of FanGirls at the screening of the new indie film he's in (Wreckers) a few weeks ago.
  12. Um, didn't Conan Doyle kill off the character and then had to 'revive' him to appease the Victorian chattering classes who were clamouring for more drug addicted, violin playing sleuths? I would wiki it, but that's down for protests today... What would Holmes do? A three pipe problem probably.
  13. Sinnerman by Nina Simone?

I have bikes from the fifties with a six speed block on one side and a fixed cog on the other - the cassette was used for summer club runs, the fixed side for winter training. I don't suppose they were doing it for the adulation of their East London peers. I'm more concerned by trendoids riding single speed with only a front brake.
  15. Its the people riding Penny Farthings that I don't trust. Not only is it a fixed gear, but it takes ages to climb up and down on to them. Ban Them! Ban Them! If I Don't Understand Gear Inches, Ban Them!
  16. "The riders are not motivated to stop at lights or zebra crossings as they lose momentum" Surely that applies to all bikes, and also to cars in my experience.
  17. Hmm, I had told myself not to post again on this thread as we've wandered into a broader topic - maybe it's a Drawing Room item instead... anyway, lies, damn lies and statistics etc. All stats taken out of context can become meaningless, but did you read the Comres research findings? It clarifies that they're being targeted specifically for their disability; not because they take their children to pubs / aren't famous enough in sainsbury's, occasionally enjoy a veggie sausage, or chose Nov 6th to set off some fireworks, all of which they may or may not do. The anonymous quotes as part of the report summary include: ?I have had people shouting abuse in the street, like ?scrounger?. I have been attacked by a group of teenagers, who attempted to kick my stick away and knock me down. This happened in a busy shopping area and no one offered to help me afterwards..? ?MS is sometimes invisible. I have had a cab driver yell at me for some time in front of my four-year-old for parking my car (in a disabled bay) legally whilst displaying my blue badge in front of the bank.? ?I have been called scrounger, parasite, and a waste of space. My personal assistant was spat at for helping me recently in a local shop.? ?I've been called names in the street and told to "stop faking and get a f***ing job" while struggling to transfer to my wheelchair from the car.? ?I can walk although it is always with great pain and difficulty. I take a wheelchair with me most places and I am treated so much differently in a wheelchair. When I do get out of the wheelchair and walk a little way, I have been accused of faking it and being lazy. Because on the outside I look healthy and "normal" people expect me to be healthy and normal.? I'm off on holiday. I hope the person mentioned in the original post is back out enjoying the park.

Fair point HelloSailor; it's a bit Medical Model / Social Model I suppose. So apologies to Saffron. I'd spent a day doing person centred planning interviews. Anyway, I hope the original person who is the topic of this thread gets the support and confidence they need to enjoy the park, and her dog, and walking.

The Scope report here; http://www.scope.org.uk/news/paralympics-attitudes-survey cites 47% said people?s attitudes towards them have got worse over the past year (May 2011: 37%) 66% of disabled people say that they have experienced aggression, hostility or name calling (May 2011: 41%) And Saffron, did you really use the phrase 'mentally retarded', are you American or Ricky Gervais?

  21. What on earth do the riots have to do with small pop up restaurants? There are lots of incubator / free rent offers for new businesses in Granville Arcade, those who have been there for years are now facing additional costs and rent increases.
  22. Sorry for tempting fate with the weather comment...
  23. But last year was rainy for lots of the month - apart from the last 24 hours the ground is pretty parched. The Muddy Hell event at the velodrome last week had to make the ground muddier in certain places to cope with the dry weather. And the Sports Ground event wasn't that crowded on the other side of the bonfire last year - people chose to congregate closer to the bars etc. rather than to spread into the field. Either way, I'll be in Brockwell Park.
  24. I don't really want to divert this thread too far, but this might be some interesting reading: "Domestic violence is often conceptualised as an ?adult? issue, something that happens between adults who are in, or have been, in an intimate relationship and research has tended to focus more on these relationships. In actual fact, adolescents experience similar levels of domestic violence as adults. It is also clear that domestic violence is still somewhat of a ?hidden? issue in our society; however, it is even more so for teenagers." From: http://www.avaproject.org.uk/media/54353/policy%20briefing%20on%20teenage%20relationship%20abuse.doc but there are other Southwark specific DV surveys.

A domestic situation? DV isn't based on bricks and mortar and a mortgage.
