  1. I have one and use it to let people know I'm there. Some people still ignore it. Some also abuse you for using it. Joy.
  2. How do you do the horrified face icon again?

A friend who did a TEFL course told me that most language schools abroad value speakers of American English over UK, apparently because it works better in an international business environment, though I think it must also be easier to learn due to the narrower vocabulary Americans tend to use and the way other accents have played into it. Writing's on the wall, folks.
  4. Go on, I dare you.
  5. You're missing out on the downhills, Jeremy. It's all about the breeze and the skirt.
  6. I'd be on the Prozac in no time.
  7. Cycling in a summer dress.
  8. Not the fact that it debases marriage to an orgy of showing-off and superficial commercialisation? Summer weddings - brides and female guests with tattoos on display, cheap champagne and the smell of fake tan.
  9. It does matter. Always seems a failing to me that when you change your settings to UK, Microsoft product menus still say 'color'.
  10. Without wishing to generalise, I think Louisa has a point. Though I don't use M&S foodhalls much, I know people who will and based on current habits they're quite likely to get into their car if it's more than 500 yards away, whereas my elderly neighbours, who've lived around here for decades, walk a lot further than that to Iceland for their weekly shop. Not sure this is a plus or minus, but I think M&S food appeals mainly to single people - reasonably quality and no waste - or those who just want something in the course of their working day, so they won't be parking for long. Anyone who wants to do a family shop or bigger household stuff in the area would probably still head for Sainsbury's.
  11. I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue.
  12. People crossing the road without looking. Nightmare when you're cycling. Maybe it's an urban thing - people so attuned to road noise they think they can tell when something's coming without looking - but bikes are nearly silent. Atlantic Road in Brixton is particularly bad, almost as if some people think there's a pedestrian zone between the two parts of the market. Yesterday someone walked off the pavement BACKWARDS in front of me.
  13. I wonder if the overinflated prices this spring were due the interest rate rise that has been signalled for later this year, with people - and estate agents - trying to get one final hurrah and cash in before the markets tips and the party's over for a while. The 2008 dip doesn't seem to have made much difference to the overall price trend and personally I'd like to see a massive correction along the lines of the one in the early 90s.
  14. Off to the villa in the Dordogne the instant Dulwich College and Jags broke up.

That was a culture shock to me when I first came to London. Also when traffic lights change from green to amber and drivers accelerate rather than slowing down, and after they go to red the next four cars go anyway. It seemed shockingly aggressive at the time.
  17. Might be worth trying the Family section too? Must be many local mothers who fit your target profile.
  18. That'd appalling. I hope someone will have seen something and will come forward.

My comment was more in the spirit of pointing out to vgrant that s/he had missed out a human frailty. My own narcissism means I buy luxury products, so I'm out of the target audience for this one. Also too old - not that you'd know it from my complexion, obviously.
  20. From memory someone said their daughter had been approached on their way to or from school. It's depressing that you only have to scratch the surface and the latent misogyny and sexism is right there waiting to seep. It has come out in a number of threads recently, with the usual names attached.
  21. Weren't there some posts on this a while back? I seem to remember someone saying they were worried about their children being approached by potential punters.
  22. You missed out narcissism.
  23. Frisky & Mannish at Udderbelly this evening.
