  1. Finally had my urodynamics test at Kings today. Mildly unpleasant/embarassing but the staff were all very nice and professional. Turns out I have the holy trinity of prolapses(bladder/womb/bowel) - described as a mild prolapse so could be a lot worse. Have booked private physio appointment for next week. According the lovely NHS lady most women who have given birth suffer from some kind of prolapse even if they are not aware of it. It frequently improves a couple of years after the birth or when breastfeeding stops. If any fitness professionals read this post can you advise re: exercise/fitness? Running and any other high impact exercises are out as are abdominal crunches (anything putting direct pressure on pelvic floor). I would still like to keep up my fitness regime. Walking is obviously an option but any way to make it more aerobic/carorie burning? And what are the options for tightening the abs when crunches are out? (including Pilates core exercises etc)
  2. I think they do but still havent managed to figure out contact info
  3. Help me please, I have left this quite late being preoccupied with work and health... My daughter turns 6 on June 6 need a venue in Nunhead/East Dulwich for 12-17 (!) girls mostly anyone ever had a party at Harris Girls academy? Would you recommend and have any contact info? thanks in advance everyone!
  4. Sorry to hijack thread - I too need somewhere local for my hubby's birthday. Crooked well sounds good... Btw if you are not worried about screaming infants at home as I am Village East is very nice - yummy cocktails too
  5. Ruth - can I borrow?
  6. No they are room size - quite big. Just really want to take a big sponge and do it by hand with some kind of shampoo. Guess need to look in supermarket for a suitable product the wool one is a persian (style?) rug. I am just fed up of moths. Have no evidence they are targeting the carpets (why would they when they can have wool and cashmere) but want to eliminate possibility. Plus they could do with a clean what with the little man tracking food everywhere. I have found raisins in unlikeliest locations
  7. I would need a spider ARMY to get rid of my moths and then I would have to deal with the spider problem. Bit of an old lady who swallowed a fly problem lots of people who live in victorian houses have problems with moths and they very hard to get rid of
  8. I meant ME doing it by hand not hiring someone to clean three rugs... thanks anyway
  9. I am plagued by moths. Thought I had made major progress when I discovered their nests (in my sweater drawer - carnage) and cleaned etc. but no, they are back with a vengeance again. I hate them and would nuke the entire house with moth spray if I could... but since I have small children I really can't bring myself to do so. Just a bit more food for thought... do you have children with lots of cuddly toys? well I would advise putting the lot in the freezer and then washing them all. Especially cuddly toys that babies chomp on and then get forgotten around the house. don't forget to clean under the bed regularly and check for stray socks or clothes fallen behind radiators etc. Prime breeding ground Do you have lovely vintage furniture? I do... take all drawers out and clean the skeleton of the furniture (where the drawers slot into). Lots of dark, small corners where dust collects and moths nest. For whatever reason the moths ignore all clothes but those made of wool to chomp on but they nest anywhere - including in cotton/synthetic material
  10. This is connected to the moth thread a little further down. Our house is plagued by moths... Anyway I would like to clean my rugs. 3 are definitely synthetic material and fairly new, one second hand and possibly wool. Is there a way to do this manually - without hiring carpet cleaner? Or if that's the only way where to get one? Recommendations please - thanks in advance
  11. nabz - if you search for SE15 Tea Groups on Facebook and join the group there's a couple of posts for new mum yoga and pilates classes which sound ideal for getting back into shape gently post baby. Ivydale children's centre also sometimes offer free aerobics classes (but imagine those fill up quickly) there's also tons of other information and get togethers etc. worth taking a look
  12. womanofdulwich I am not sure what you mean by your post. If you need an incentive to lose weight you should read the post about prolapse? Sorry it's late and I am tired and having started the thread on prolapse I am confused. I feel that losing weight and exercising (both of which I did but about 9 months after the baby) did contribute to my prolapse. The consultant at Kings said that exercise alone did not cause it and that some people are just more prone to it than others - bur in my case running certainly did not help. As fapl mentions you need to tread very carefully about exercise if you are post partum and have a weak pelvic floor. You need to strengthen your core first before embarking on anything high impact. I have the hab-it DVD and can highly recommend it. It's probably good about easing into exercise post partum but it is very specialised about pelvic floor rehabilitation so on it's own won't give you a washboard tummy! Sorry if this is getting off topic and try not to worry. If I managed to get my flat tummy back at nearly 40, I imagine you can do it at 20!
  13. I frequently contemplate buying one of the houses in my street (all of which seem to be going on sale) just so I can start over with an empty house
  14. Try moonfruit - it is pretty easy to use and you can customise it to an extent. You can build/design a website for free but need to pay for the hosting I think. And it has options for shops http://www.moonfruit.com/
  15. I would use time out or any other similar method IF I thought it would work. I think he is too young for it. The hitting seems to be his automatic response when he is not getting his way or is not getting what he is asking for (a LOT of chatter and pointing at things). I think some of this behaviour will ease when he can communicate effectively. In the meantime will try to explain somehow that hitting is unacceptable. Does not help that as renen says the tantrums are sometimes incredibly comical. The way my son says 'no!' or 'nooooo!' always makes me laugh. I think I can prevent some of the situations by handing him a snack before he gets frustrated (crackers are working wonders at the moment)
  16. No did not see that - not sure it would have helped. Hoping I can avoid the surgery route as the success rate of these surgeries is quite low and sometimes they end up causing the very problems they try to fix! Cannot believe medical science has such limited options for such a common problem (although not many women seek help for it so it is estimated that actual numbers are much higher). It is a very complex issue though - and the title of the thread is very misleading. Although my GP referred to it as vaginal prolapse 'pelvic organ prolapse' is much more accurate.
  17. Eventually he followed me to the next room and I picked him up and talked to him about not hitting etc. I do that every time he hits. But whole incident took a good 20 mins. Don't have the (time) luxury to ignore him every time and not sure it is productive at this age. Not sure he understands why I am doing what I am doing. The moods can happen any time, out of the blue sometimes but seem to peak at mealtimes which are very hit and miss. Sometimes he eats well and feeds himself more or less successfully (very messily) other times he refuses even a single moutful. Sad thing is that when he is in a good mood he is an absolute delight. He is very sweet with his sister, laughs a lot is very very funny... Why did I have a Scorpio baby? Not that I believe in it really but then I am a Scorpio too and I have a lot of these bad traits
  18. I tried the saying NO then ignoring method once or twice. He just sat on the floor far, far away from me and cried. When he approached me it was to hit me - so I said no again. This took ages to resolve. He is extremely stubborn. The frustrating thing is the bad moods peak during mealtimes and when I really need him to eat (then I have to prepare food for my daughter). Distraction works occasionally but not always. I have heard no reports of bad behaviour from his nursery where he is very popular.
  19. My little boy is delightful, adorable, very funny and super affectionate. Unfortunately, he is also very stubborn, has a jealous streak, and most of all is very prone to tantrums and temper fits if he doesn't get his way. In stark contrast to my daughter (now nearly 6) who never had tantrums and still gets upset if we even look disappointed in her, my son could care less if we are upset, tell him 'NO' etc. When he is in a mood he will start pushing things (or me) away - this has resulted in food, drinks, toys etc being thrown. He will hit (not hard but still upsetting) or start screaming, throw himself on the ground etc. The difference between when is in a good mood and bad is like two different children. How do I discipline him? Can I even get through to him at such a young age? I have lost my temper (raised my voice - made no impact whatsoever) on a number of occasions which I hate to do but he is very frustrating. The bad moods peak when he is overtired and during meal times but really they can happen any time.
  20. Bit of an update: having an ultrasound this thursday and an appointment with urogynae department next Monday. I hope once I have a bit more info I can raise awareness of this issue which is affecting so many women.
  21. So sorry to hear about this. I was also mugged in February outside Ivydale school at 5.30pm; was pushed to the ground when I tried to hold on to my bag (obviously back then it was much darker outside). Your mugger sounds of similar build and description to mine. Police never got back to me after initial visit I assume they have found nothing. I found the mugging affected me deeply took me a month to stop thinking about it. Hope you can put it behind you.
  22. I read the book when it first came out five years before having my daughter. I liked it very much. I re read it after having children and certainly understood it better. I like her writing and certainly identified with parts of it. It is not a joy ride but again it's her personal experience
  23. Just wanted to say thank you all so much for the messages posted here and the incredibly kind and helpful PMs. I am surprised that having had two babies and devoured endless books about childbirth I never once came across pelvic prolapse as an issue. I think if I were educated about this I may have been a little more serious about doing my pelvic squeezes!
  24. I have a follow up appointment with the GP in 10 days time (to allow for blood results and urine test to come back - some checking for IBS type symptoms) but when I booked it prolapse was mentioned as one possibility for my symtoms. Went home and read about it and examined myself and lets just say it is obvious. I think the running which I tooke up about 4-5 months ago may have actually caused the prolapse or pushed it over the edge. I dont think I can wait another week without having it checked. It is literally all I think about and physically I can feel it constantly now that I am aware of it. I have a referral for Kings urogyny department (for end of March) but again this was booked before prolapse was the identified problem - it was because I had stress incontinence and unable to preform pelvic floor exercises succesfully (both of which are as a result of the prolapse). Should I go in and ask for an emergency appointment? Though how am I going to manage one outside work hours is beyond me. Since starting this new job I have had the flu (twice), was then mugged and hurt my spine, have (suspected) IBS and now the prolapse. I feel like 2012 is jinxed.
  25. My baby is nearly 16 months. I have had some signs for a while now which I thought were due to weak pelvic floor etc. I only realised this was a persistent problem after I started running regularly. How incredibly ironic that now I have finally got my body back my body is giving up on me
