Had very little sleep last night so this post is really to vent... Baby (no2) is now three months and I think instead of working to sleep through the night he is doing the exact opposite and waking more and more each night. Last night it was bedtime 8.30 and then up at 10.50, 1,3.50,6 and possibly more I lost count. I started keeping a log so naturally baby thought he would give me something to write about. I don't know if it's hunger (growth spurt?) or his slightly blocked nose or his gassy tummy. The list is endless. My daughter who is now in school was a terror her entire first year waking at least 2-4 times a night until we sleep trained her at 13 months. Every time I talk to friends they ask "so is he sleeping through now?". These are childless friends I hasten to add. I am starting to think that a breastfed baby sleeping through the night without the aid of formula top ups is a complete myth. So if you have a young baby (or even an older one) that sleeps well count your blessings and please don't tell me about it!

Peckham Rye activities for babies
supergolden88 replied to tinkerbell's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Check what's on at the Ivydale Children's centre (at Ivydale School) -
They have it as an afterschool club at my daughter's school. Is it worth going to? Not that she needs any encouragement in the drama section - we had a complete 30 minute meltdown this morning because we insisted she wore trousers not a skirt for school visit to a farm...

Nasal congestion hell...

Thanks willing to try anything. Never tried Gripe Water before. At this point baby looks at me very suspiciously whenever I put him on the bed - dreading the nose drops/aspirator/infacol torture. -
Nasal congestion hell...

Thanks Shauna and everyone else Shauna I hope your little one improves very soon. What a rotten time for poo baby! It is very upsetting when they throw up entire feeds - I was in tears over this. My boy won't take a bottle unless the planets align usually middle of the night and then only if it's mostly breastmilk... BTW if you want to continue breastfeeding by all means bottlefeed but express every time you do - my milk once abundant nearly dried up because baby was not feeding well for 2/3 days. I had to express a few times a day and get nothing to keep milk supply going. The (male) GP was great. He checked everything: chest, ears, mouth/throat etc. All clear despite the congestion. Told him baby was not feeding well and seemingly had no appetite and he said could be reflux but then examined his tummy and the culprit is... gas! His poor tummy was like a drum when he tapped it. I can't believe it. Second time mum here, I should know better. Bear in mind I saw a female GP who observed me breastfeeding (or trying to - baby would latch on and then pull away crying)for over half an hour and her suggestion was to wash before a feed as my scent may be offputting (thanks a bunch btw)!! Not once did she mention gas as a possibility. Anyway have been back on the Infacol and fingers crossed things will improve. Nose still very stuffy overnight but GP said to continue using saline (Tixilyx now do little one use ampules which work a lot better than the sprays). I really hope he turns a corner soon -

Have got an emergency appointment with GP. Even though the congestion is less "wet" he still has trouble breathing and I have noticed feeding a lot less. I feel like I am producing a lot less milk too - couple of times I tried to express to boost supply I got next to nothing (normally it's no problem). I am seriously concerned. Even though he seems alert and engaged etc. when awake he is not producing many wet nappies (except overnight one which is heavy but then again has been on ages). -

Yes I do think I need to go to the GP. Some of the discharge was bloody today and he was very upset/unsettled. I forgot to say that he has been having lots of slimy green poos as well - I assume that is the mucus. Poor mite he hasn't had a week when everything is well. -
My son is nearly three months. Almost since birth he has had a slightly dry nose which I attributed to the fact that the house is so dry, central heating etc. This bothered him and he kept rubbing his face on our shoulder, constantly attacking his face with his hands etc. A week ago the dry nose turned into a completely congested nose. Mucus constantly dripping down his throat making breastfeeding difficult, frequent throwing up and sleeping at night almost impossible. We are doing everything we can to help - elevated moses basket, humidifier, steaming in bathroom, karvol and saline drops /aspirator. He has had one night of decent sleep and every other day and night he is miserable, uncofortable and never content. I spend all day yesterday either bouncing, breastfeeding or trying to get him to sleep on me. Needless to say am exhausted and overemotional. I guess I want to know there's light at end of the tunnel - dont think I can do this much longer!

My son is nearly three months old and my post baby body is starting to depress me big time... I have very limited time in which to exercise - I tend to do exercise DVDs during the week as and when I can (not very ofter to be truthful!) but would like to start running again on weekends. I need a running partner to motivate and keep me company while I run (or more likely walk at a pace) around Peckham Rye Common. At the moment I can only do it on weekends as my darling boy goes to bed around 8pm. Meeting time flexible to suit baby naps etc. As the days get longer I may even contemplate running during weekday evenings but that's very ambitious I know... Please PM if interested

I would like to buy a footmuff for my Bee but the branded version is ridiculously expensive (and I dont like the material much). Can you use any other non brand versions with the Bee? Feedback much appreciated

How long does EBM last in the fridge (in a medela bottle)? And do you know how long it is safe outside the fridge? I have googled but not sure I trust the results! thanks!

I have (hopefully) found a nanny who will be helping me with my two month old son a couple of mornings (9am-2pm) a week while I do freelance work at home. She will be coming as and when I need her and will be doing her first morning sometime this week. I don't have any experience with nannies. Will I be expected to provide lunch/snacks for her if she is at home with me? Is it reasonable to ask her to prepare something herself? I need to devote all the 'free' time to work while she is around - and as my son is breastfeeding that is not very much time.

Thanks I was looking at that one thinking it looked good. I may just order it now!

My two month old son is showing interest in toys etc and thought it would be a good time to invest in a baby gym. He has got an old hand me down but most of the toys are missing so this would be a belated xmas present. Which one should I go for? There's a bewildering array out there and the one I like (Lamaze pyramid gym) does not have any space for him to roll etc.

Breastfeeding and going back to work
supergolden88 replied to anna_r's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I too have a daughter that refused every bottle on the planet. When she was about 8 months I gave her a bottle to play with and noticed her sucking on teat. I put water in bottle and she surprised me by drinking some. I then tried her with formula and she took it fine. It was a Dr Brown bottle. Up till then she had never taken one. So you may be surprised one day two months down the line. In the meantime you could also introduce a beaker at 6 months and give water or EBM. I continued to breastfeed morning evening and during the night and she took formula bottles and solids at Nursery. My son who is two months will sometimes take a bottle but fusses and spits out most of it be it formula or EBM or a mix of the two. He is on Nuk bottles with latex teats. I wish he would take it more readily and will keep trying but it is hard work and very discouraging at times. Best of luck -
Slept bit better swaddled in Velcro contraption which he could not escape from. Hope I can bring his daytime naps back to normal because he was super irritable yesterday. feel marginally more human today on more than two winks.
-
That does sound likely. I have noticed that he seems tO have found his hands today and is deliberately trying to suck them. Also seems interested in toys and baby gym etc. But he has been completely unable to switch off all day and I had to use a Velcro swaddle to restrain his constantly moving limbs. Hope he calms down soon because he is scaring me a little. Pray he sleeps tonight at least a little better

My son is two months on Wednesday. He decided to ring in the new year by waking up at midnight - so far so normal - and then not going back to sleep until at least 3.30am. He would drop off to sleep on me (or the boob) but the minute he was put down he would writhe and grunt or just BE awake. He spent those hours breastfeeding a lot of the time. He then woke up again at 5am and continued same pattern. Even when swaddled tightly he would escape and wake himself up. I think overall he slept about four hours and me even less. Even now getting him to nap is a huge struggle. He is extremely restless, making a lot of noise even when asleep finally on bouncy chair with vibration on and someone bouncing him constantly. Most nights he will go to bed between 7.30-8.30pm and wake between 12-2am and again at least once more in the night but would breastfeed briefly and then go to sleep fairly easily. Anyone experienced this? Is it an extreme growth spurt? Happy 2011 to all of you and hope you have slept more than me!

I now want one too!

I too would love to establish some sort of regural exercise regime. Running would be ideal (with a partner) but I dont feel I could do that before baby is a bit older and sleeping at a reasonable hour and also days are longer. I used to do a fantastic yoga class Saturday mornings at Copleston Centre not sure it is still on but keen to do that again. If you discover any suitable classes on weekends let me know!

Small fontanelle at 6 week check...
supergolden88 replied to supergolden88's topic in The Family Room Discussion
His head shape is perfect (biased, me?) and the GP said so as well. But he is only 6 weeks not sure whether that will change. I am a bit surprised your brother had surgery so early on they must have diagnosed it awfully early. I am now seeing GP again on Jan 5th - she is away over the holidays like everyone else I guess. I will ask for referral just in case and to get things going. Babies - they always manage to figure out a way to scare you -
Small fontanelle at 6 week check...
supergolden88 replied to supergolden88's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Ruth, can that be right? All babies are born with fontanelles although they may close (fuse) early in some. Did your GP say his fontanelles had closed prematurely? It is something they would be concerned about unless head growth etc. is absolutely normal but again that would have to be monitored over time... Please correct me if I am wrong I only started reading up on this last night! -
Baby had his 6 week check yesterday and the GP said he had a very small anterior fontanelle. Initially she wanted to refer me to a pediatrician then said she would observe first before referral. I tried to feel for his soft spot and it is difficult to locate and very small. Baby is gaining weight nicely, has already been smiling for almost two weeks, is making lots of cooing sounds and holds head well. Head circumference is also fine, 75% centile. GP told me not be overly concerned but wants to see him again in two weeks. At 1am last night I started researching this on my ipod and have thoroughly freaked myself out!! Premature closing of fontanelles can lead to abnormal head growth, may require surgery etc. Has anyone else had this?

When babies refuse to go to sleep...
supergolden88 replied to supergolden88's topic in The Family Room Discussion
large glass of wine and a bath. Sounds heavenly. I think baby was overtired and finding hard to switch off. Or his routine is a few hours off. Just hope he naps tomorrow. Tonight is going to be tough
