    Dick?s Out

With the title of this thread, I worry about what the bots might contribute.....
  3. I've suffered worse shoeings on various EDF threads....
  4. There were 12,400 deaths in England and Wales last week, 11% of these were peeople 'with' a positive covid test in last 28 days. While its morbid and unsavory (as we're talking about people's brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers etc behind the numbers), but zero covid is not a practical expectation.....so collectively as a society, we have to decide if 11% (but with a lower number likely to be with Covid as the primary casue of death) of all deaths in the peak season for respiriroty illness is too much or too little.....
  5. I've been busy with other things...you know...life....for the last few days anf have just caught up on this fascinating thread.... I'll upfront acknowledge that I dont like Boris at all, Johnson shouldn't have made the Starmer/Saville comment, and there is indeed no place for intimidation of politicians in Society. Now for the bit that many of the posters above will not like so much.... The partisanship (a polite word for bias) just drips off most of the posts on here....and Keano is 100% correct that mask of tolerance completely slips from many of your progressive/lefty digital faces when someone makes an argument you dislike. Keano is also 100% correct that the silence is deafening on abusive or aggressive language when it comes from posters who the 'EDF mob' philosophically agree with. If I had seen any one of you call out DR for some of his disgusting, personal comments above...then I might be able to take this thread a bit more seriously when you have a go at people like keano.... But back to bias not specific to the EDF...it seems to me that when a right-wing politician gets shouted at and abused...its just people 'calling out' evil/stupid/arrogant/populist/dangerous/unjust figures; but left-wing politician gets shouted at and it's suddenly an 'intimidatory mob', and things like horrendous murders of left-wing politicans gets rasied as the clear directionj of travel (Just by way of case study...there must be about a dozen mentions of Jo Cox above, but not one mention of David Amisss....I wonder why that might be....?). Intimidation, abuse (oh..and murder) should be 'called out' regardless of which political colour is on the recieving end.

On that we can agree. As someone who works in the investment industry, I had to look up what NFT was the other day....FFS.... Maybe I'm just a dinosaur....but screw that....

As with any investment...whether that's property, equities, horse racing or crypto....if you don't really understand how it works....then you probably shouldn't be putting money into it. Even 'experts' in each of those fields are doing well if they are right more than 50 percent of the time.....

Do you have any idea how much it cost to heat a ?200K extension??!!
  9. no no no...it was only a majority of people who voted, not an actual majority....the rest of the people who didnt vote were all against it i've been told:) but anyway....lets not drag this into another 'B' debate.... In ancyas, its all rather the depressing if a majority of senisble people still equal a tiny minority of all people....
  10. An Oil & Gas windfall tax, may indeedd be a decent way to claw back some money. But who are you taxing? Companies that are produce gas in the UK? - most of them barely make a profit most of the time, this country's domestic gas production industry is well past the 'decline' stage (take note indepednent scotland supporters). Companies that are listed in the UK and produce gas elsewhere in the world? So we would effectively be forcing up other countries energy prices. What about the ~40% of energy (inclouding gas) that the UK use that it actually imports? The companies importing arent making a windfall, they're the ones paying the high prices. Anyway...not saying it cant be done, but while its a nice soudbite when you're in opposition (easy votewinner to rage against faceless, big, dirty oil companies!), it is much more difficult to apply in practice to rasie an amount that will actually make a tangible difference... Anyway.....that aside, not sure I agree that 'most sensible people' were really fully aware of what they were asking for (economically speaking) in supporting lockdowns. And now that the piper wants to get paid it seems that 'most' people are searching around for anyone but themselves to blame... from the indy.... "Sixty-nine per cent of voters say ministers are to blame for rising energy prices, ahead of household energy providers (65 per cent) and the regulator Ofgem (58 per cent). Only oil and gas companies themselves, the windfall tax targets, are seen as more blameworthy, with 78 per cent of voters saying they bear responsibility for the energy crisis" Im not saying people shouldnt moan about rising cost of living, and im not saying that the government shoulodnt try to help them more....im just saying that people shouldnt just brush off the consequences of lockdowns like it was always going to be a minor inconviencne. Im sure you (and others) would ask brexiteers to 'own' the finacial impacts of brexit...fair enough...so lockdown advocates (of which there are a great many in the opposition parties) should also 'own' the root casue of much of the inflation we're now seeing...
  11. I think Spartty is okay to say 'families'.....families can take all different forms these days...its doesnt just define the traditional nuclear family....and in anycase living alone doesnt mean one doesnt have a family...but fair 'everyone' might just be easier....:) Back in the general direction of the topic..... While people can point to 'global' gas prices, brexit, supply chain issues etc etc etc as being the cause of the current inflationary cycle...all of that missing the real, main 'cause' (which actually is the driver of some of thsoe thigns i've listed)...lockdowns...if you shut down society ? that is, restrict productive activity, across almost the entire world ? while at the same time pumping vast amounts of money into the economy via fiscal stimulus, monetary stimulus, business relief and furlough schemes, then you are going to have inflation.....whether that be through global gas prices, tansport costs, food costs, or whatever...it was always going to happen. So I truly hope that the people who argued (and a fair arguement too) that the life saving nature of lockdowns during a pandemic massively outweight the economic implications.....are now not also the same people moaning about massive inflation and rtising costs of living...somewhow I dont think thats probably the case....
  12. One can only hope this does indeed pave the way for the public to live track where a sent letter or parcel is on an app or online (when just sent by regular mail, without the need to pay for additional tracking)....althogh after recent performance Im not sure if thats something that Royal Mail would really want!
  13. You probably shouldnt feed your dog alchohol in that case....
  14. Just back from a gathering of local like-minded folk...hope the fireworks didn't disturb your dog...

It's the two year 'anniversary' of leaving the EU today...I expect most of the Tory MPs would have had a coordinated social media blitz irrespective of the need to draw attention away from other troubles...

  17. Well a quick skim of the report suggests a massive anti-climax....no matter what your view on the PM and the goverenment.... 9 pages of non-committall language and vague platitudes, which basically dont tell us anything we didnt already know.... Tory MP's should stop p!ssing about and get these letters into the 1922 committee....the damage being done as a result of government just drifting along, with a few hasilty thought out populist policies thrown in to divert attention is well beyond a joke now...

  19. Given a number of people have made the point that this is only one side of the story...it's notable that most commenters seem to have assumed that this discussion the bosses want to have with her 'in due course' is to take her to task over her comment.... Just a thought, but perhaps on reflection they were shocked and disappointed in themselves and want to address any concerns she might have regarding sexism in the workplace...perhaps they want a little time to make sure they approach that meeting in the best conciliatory/constructive manner...they perhaps want to make clear they want to improve the company culture. Anyway...perhaps that's wishful thinking..but it would seem a very stupid thing to do in today's climate for any sensible business owner to respond to an accusation of sexism by sacking or in some way making life difficult for the compplainant (but of course I know it does happen)....anyway...just a thought...but perhaps everyone might come out of the initial confrontation with a better outlook and improved work environment. Disagreements can sometimes result in self-reflection, and have positive outcomes as they get people talking....
  20. Man I wish I was as smart as you guys...to have such certainty that one is right about everything is a rare thing.... You don't need inverted commas....toxic is toxic....

  23. Slightly facetious comment.... But in winter, as a spectacle wearer, any donning of the mask either inside or outside results in almost immediate blindness through fogging...so I do have to judge what I'm doing as to relative risk....I.e. School pickup, risk of collecting the wrong child:)....

Look I think many aspects of this whole thing stink...and I personally will be glad to see him gone. But, some of these stories are getting a little ridiculous and risk undermining the perception of the more serious breaches. The people in number 10 were essential workers, they were physically sitting next to each-other all day in their office....its was BJ's birthday...from what I have read they did what every office everywhere has done at some time or another, they stopped and looked up from their desks, while someone awkwardly presentetd a cake to the birthday boy....he would have then said 'thanks for all your hard work' or something to that effect and then everyone would have turned back to their screens after a requisite amount of fake smiling, forced joviality and looking like you really care....on such an occasion I think nearly everyoine would be saying 'I wasnt aware that it was a party'.... Boozing on the garden terrace or in the basement, with 30-40 other people...well thats a little different....
