The markets are always the last to react to anything. The markets are full of lemmings. It looks positive to you because.... we haven't had another huge shocking piece of news for two or three months? The banks are still full of bad debt that has yet to crystalise. The housing market is not looking good anywhere. And sovereign debt... There's a mountain of public sector unemployment to come. 'Confidence that sentiment is improving' seems a strange measure of anything - unless your intention is to take advantage of short-term changes in lemming-like sentiment to go in, get out, and hopefully make a quick buck or two if you time it right.

It's how you kill. Marmora Man is right about others moving in. We certainly do seem to have a population explosion. I've seen five or six different foxes in ten minutes walking along Court Lane, and there are 2 living within 20 yards of my gate. I reckon the traditional urban densities (up to 30 per km2) are being exceeded by a huge margin.

Saturday mornings too. -
I've been thinking of bringing out the big guns and investing in a high-velocity water pistol. Give it some aversion training.

Bendy buses, by any chance? -
No, it's the cat. He/she does it in my presence (while I'm inside looking out). The lawn is also favoured.

There's a neighbourhood cat that poops on my path and on my porch steps. Yuk.

Can't be bothered. -
I suggest we put up a big, big sign: "Sainsbury's Rat Park". Then call the SLP. That might get Sainbury's interested.

Cornwell is a writer, a Fellow of Jesus College, and a Catholic (though he left the church for a period), and has published a book or two on Catholic matters. He was given special access to private Vatican papers at one point, in preparation for writing the book that became Hitler's Pope (given that he was largely sympathetic), but I understand the Vatican pretty much turned on him when they saw the results. This piece was published in Vanity Fair, based on material from the book. http://emperors-clothes.com/analysis/hitlerspope.htm It's long, but interesting and worth reading to the end. I understand Cornwell may have modified his views on the then Pope's wiggle room since the book was published (but the facts he recounts stand). > Sorry for the digression all, as you were. > > Actually if im going to be frank and digress > again, i think people in this country are > distrusting of religion full stop. I know I get a > bit shocked when i hear a rational person say 'i'm > going to church'. Maybe that's all my earlier > point boils down to. I think you're right. The issue of the PM's conversion has been raised. Many loathed Tony dragging religion (of all colours) into education, not his adherence to particular faiths. And Cherie was always a C, but nobody much paid notice - the *important* issues were things like the PM and his wife consorting with a fraudster and suchlike... and her poor taste in clothes. -

Most would have a cashless card catering system. Trying to get any food or drink at all in a building where you are a visitor for just a day... A situation that none of these firms seemed to have foreseen when they installed the system.

Given that (a) none of my friends are remotely "girlie" and (b) I don't know anyone who wears a tracksuit, male or female, you would appear not to know me at all.

I think I have every right to criticise the organisation that tried to brainwash me as a child (in various countries). In this country, there are many, many people who are the children of Catholic immigrants (and not just Ireland). And quite a few of us are critical of the organisation and/or its leaders. Why is this worrying? (There are even many Anglo-catholics critical of Rome.) -

Too right - the Nazis persecuted many groups... but the only ones invading my mental space in my own home without my permission are the religious ones. I do feel I have a right not to be sold religion in my own home, to not to have my working day interrupted by sales pitches for things of no interest to me. John: most of those 'selling religion' door-to-door these days are not JWs. They are members of the thousands of new churches built on the pentacostal business model (prosperity promised for large donors, sale of prayers for hundreds or thousands of pounds, exorcism/deliverance for cash and all that other stuff). As has been mentioned, some of the thousands of these churches now have sales teams just like the guys who used to try and sell you life insurance or plastic windows. You'll find their leaflets all over Catford, the bus station at Lewisham etc. They are growing at a rate of knots in SE London...

Sorry Huguenot, my comment was aimed at John, not you. I hadn't seen yours! :-S But yours is a good one.
