Asgard Bike Sheds - How Safe?
northernmonkey replied to Rednaic's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Our neighbours had a wooden shed broken into this week as did another friend so whatever you go for, additonal security measures seem sensible! -
e-Scooter parking at North Dulwich station?!
northernmonkey replied to Dulwich_Dad's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think as others have commented, it doesn?t seem wise to leave it around. The whole advantage of scooters is that they?re very portable -
People used to drive from roads like Heber, Uplands Ullverscroft etc and park near the station - especially when it rained as per above. Expect those commuters would just walk (like they always should have - but were enabled by not being restricted)
-
I think that a lot of it used to come down Melbourne grove (ie along the south bit as a cut through) and then cut through Melbourne or Derwent if Melbourne looked busy - or be rushing up the streets to get to Matham - so that has been re routed. I also think that there is a hell of a lot of traffic from people driving to schools where they really don't need to so some of that will have evaporated. There is also the point that lots of entrances onto a road causes greater congestion with more stop start of cars which is obviously worse for pollution (and wouldn't help with electric cars either as it is the breaking that produces more pm2.5). Maybe by not having traffic trying to constantly get out from these roads then the flow is smoother too - especially true of the section at the end of melbourne grove where the crossroads was just chaos.
-
And again - it does back up sporadically throughout the day - at weird times too - like 11:37 should not be a peak time, so its generally that a taxi or delivery van has stopped on the single yelows near the junction and that this unloading is causing a weird peak - generally 5 mins later its gone.
-
Think its important that there are some warnings as this zone has been so long in being implemented. Sounds like the council are doing this and so people will have no excuse for not knowing - that and the fact there are signs up showing that the zone is in operation and what the hours are.
-
You're absolutely right - there was a huge noticeable difference the day the planters went in - for a couple of days the gridlock on East Dulwich grove was horrific - it was right up past the hospital all the way up to Lordship lane. This was well beyond the normal realms of congestion. Pre lockdown the furthest queues generally went up to maybe Melbourne grove. Had this continued i'd agree that it was unsupportable. However, after about 2 days that congestion fell away dramatically - if anything ED grove is quieter now than it ever was on the stretch between the hospital and Lordship lane - i expect that some of this is due to cars who would cut through the streets that are now closed, onto ED grove and down Matham to turn right onto the Lane. There are still the occasional snarl ups - this morning there was a random queue (probably someone unloading closer to the junction or delivering), but 5 mins later it was totally gone again. Agree that the crossing needs attention. But whatever is put in will mean cars stopping outside your house as you live at the junction of 2 ?A?roads. Will mean that every time the pedestrian crossing is used cars will have to stop. What?s to be done then? Asgard Bike Sheds - How Safe?
northernmonkey replied to Rednaic's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
We really wanted a Brighton Bike shed because they are beautiful to look at, but when it came to ordering the lead time was almost 6 months so that was too long for us. There is no perfect answer. The more secure your shed is then perhaps its a flag that there are valuable bikes inside - whereas less secure are easier to break into so lower effort - not sure there is a perfect answer really. What we have done is try to make it as inconvenient as possible whilst still useable for us - obviously putting a shed in the back garden is more secure, but its more hassle if you use your bikes as transport rather than a hobby - we use ours every day so need them accessible. We always lock them all together inside the shed, just so its another thing to unlock, we have a security light and a cctv camera on the shed. One of the houses on Calton Ave has a brighton shed if you wanted to see how lovely they are in reality! -
Whilst I agree that for the first couple of days the traffic on East Dulwich Grove was horrible, and outside the normal levels for that road, the picture being painted by the poster above simply isn?t true of the days since, in fact around school times the traffic has been lower than normal. It is entirely possible that living right up next to the junction the above poster has a different impression but at that stretch, one car unloading for example has a huge impact. For an example see below:
-
Perhaps to go to the hairdressers or beauty salon or shop in fashion conscious - as despite the comments from the shops the road is open to cars from the other end and the same number of short stay places as before remain. In fact since the cpz they are now available for use for longer (paid) which is probably more useful as before all the free spaces were full of commuters and the short stay were 30mins max which isn?t helpful for a facial or haircut! spider69 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > If you did not live in them where would you be > driving too, to see the barricades?

That?s not the case - there are 2 zones, Peckham west and east dulwich - grove vale is basically the divide - people on grove vale are eligible for permits in either I think but don?t think interchangeable
-
I?ve set out on the petition thread that if these roads should be reopened, we should also open up all the closed off or restricted roads in East Dulwich to maximise driving ease. In summary this would include: Oglander Road: (remove paved area at Grove Vale end to allow a straight cut through up to Bellenden Road and beyond), Ondine Road : remove one way section- benefit as above Coppleston Road: Make 2 way throughout Bellenden Road: make 2 way throughout Oakhurst Grove: remove bollards near junction with Kelmore Grove - to allow access through from East Dulwich Road and remove pressure from the Peckham Rye junction. Milo Road- remove barriers to allow easy access from Lordship Lane through to the village Friern Road- remove barriers to allow for alternative to getting stuck down the side of Peckham Rye. Surely if all these closures were reopened then the gridlock in the area would disappear.
-
I assume that those of you pushing this petition will also support me in my bid to have the following roads re-opened, as without these closures my assertion is that the traffic will flow much more freely around the local area: Oglander Road: (remove paved area at Grove Vale end to allow a straight cut through up to Bellenden Road and beyond), Ondine Road : remove one way section- benefit as above Coppleston Road: Make 2 way throughout Bellenden Road: make 2 way throughout Oakhurst Grove: remove bollards near junction with Kelmore Grove - to allow access through from East Dulwich Road and remove pressure from the Peckham Rye junction. Milo Road- remove barriers to allow easy access from Lordship Lane through to the village Friern Road- remove barriers to allow for alternative to getting stuck down the side of Peckham Rye. I feel sure that if all these closures were reopened then the gridlock in the area would disappear.

In answer to your question as to whether your thoughts are correct - the answer is ?no? not really. The timed closures are one direction only and they are bus gates. So the school coaches will go through in either direction as well as local busses (p4) rupert james Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Are my thoughts on the above correct. > > With Townley closed at the times stated does that > mean with Elsie, melbourne Grove etc all traffic > will have to go via Lordship Lane/ EDG to get to > the village and points west or drive all the way > up to the south circular by the old grove tavern > and come back past the picture gallery. > > After drop off where do the coaches go? > > Has any common sense been applied to this

Wow- seems unnecessarily rude - do you think you might phrase things differently if this forum made people use real names?

cello teacher and cello hire
northernmonkey replied to dustykelly's topic in The Family Room Discussion
You could try south London music on grove vale for instrument hire. They may also have a cello teacher recommendation. Otherwise try music south to see if they have anyone with availability? -

Despite constantly commenting, it appears you?ve never been to the closure. It?s blocked off at calton, dulwich village and court. It?s not a turning circle. The part where they are standing is no motorised vehicles! How does having people standing within a blocked off road, one which is closed to motorised traffic but accessible to cyclists and pedestrians stop people turning round lorries???? See these tweets for amazing singing on Rye Lane. Also- for everyone commenting about people not being able to get through on bikes- it looked like only one side of the junction was being used so plenty of space for cyclists to pass. intexasatthe moment Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Life's not fair though is it ?
