William Hill on Grove Vale
northernmonkey replied to kjhardy27's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Walked past this today - it has 2 plaques on the door - Aspect Construction and Pavillion Real Estate company - can't imagine that they'll own the building long term (maybe though?) so wondered if anyone knew any more - theres a huge bit on the back that i think used to be a garage so it has a really large footprint! -
its strange isn't it -we are lucky and get the majority of our post - subscriptions are now arriving weekly, but then every now and again we get something with a huge delay on it so its not a reliable service for us.

Rude man knocking on doors
northernmonkey replied to TreacleRabbit's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
This has been going on for years around here - see also the 'ex offenders selling cloths' - imagine its not always the same person, but the technique is the same - there was talk about it being an organised thing whereby they report back to someone who runs the scheme - don't think any are legit. -
Is Emily's really as good as Kens? even the chips? If so will have to give it a go!

More cycle storage on Whateley Road
northernmonkey replied to Alys Torrance's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think that although there are safety concerns with the hangers or any on street storage, if you don't have anywhere else to keep them and its a risk you're willing to take, they're still a good option. Important to recognise though that you should definitely add the best possible locks and not rely on the hanger locks. -
Abandoned vehicle BD06XSR
northernmonkey replied to nealfairfield's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
That wouldn't explain the lack of tax or MOT - if it has neither it cannot be legally stored on the highway. The 6m extension to MOT is reflected in the checker. As per above, keep reporting to the DVLA / Council. -
Didn't think it was particularly controversial to be honest - so couldn't imagine why you wouldn't - but in terms of the lamenting about the problems for the post office, seems like theres been an obvious easier fix for years than them driving across the pavement.

The problem with shared paths is if there are any volume of pedestrians or cyclists at all they quickly become unusable - as it pushes the problem onto a different group - my thought was if people could link from the protected stretches of road by the station, for a section of East Dulwich grove, the roads like Trossachs are suitably quiet to then cycle through - then can easily access Calton etc. I think that what needs to happen now is more linkage between the low traffic neighbourhoods - so links between Dulwich Village and Railton Road - East Dulwich and Dulwich Village etc

bike buddies scheme launched
northernmonkey replied to Sally Eva's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Were you looking to be the buddy (ie experienced rider) or were you wanting to be paired with a more experienced rider? Theres plenty of space on the road - but the parking would need to go - its mostly empty by the Dutch estate but very full opposite the Charter school. In fact though one option that could work for cyclists is a small stretch of cycle lane linking up melbourne grove to Glengarry and then cyclists can rejoin the road at the crossroads. Its less ideal for many reasons but if there is resistence it would be a good way of linking up the low traffic cells.

As above, I wouldn't do it on public transport as you'd have to take the 37 and change to the P4 and that's not a great option even in non covid times. As per upthread - cycle your kids over, its a nice route and can imagine its much quicker than driving. If your kids can't cycle yet (though if they're old enough for sports clubs I'd imagine they can), then bike seats, tandems , follow -mes etc are options. Sorry for making the same point again as upthread but it seems relevant. There are multiple bays outside the shops - why can't some be repurposed for a loading bay and while we're at it at least one disabled bay too?
-
The proposals on the One Dulwich website say 'we have drafted this proposal without expert advice from a traffic engineer' - is that untrue then?
-
Or more accurately - it, along with the deliveries for the Chemist used to drive across the pavement and exit onto the Calton Ave side - hugely dangerous for the large number of children in that area. How they have never had a loading bay there I don't know - but apparently in Dulwich, even though everyone is suddenly very concerned for the disabled, there isn't even a disabled bay outside the shops and never has been, let alone a loading bay!

Sports clubs in Dulwich: JAGs - accessible via Greendale for many with a short stretch on the road - do-able with children. Alternatively kids on pavement, adult on the road. As long as they're sensible - give pedestrians room and go past slowly no one minds kids not being in the road (cycling at people is more of an issue!) Dulwich College - with the filtered streets near the station those on the Oglander side (incidentally also filtered roads) can cycle up Melbourne / Derwent etc and then a very short stretch on EDG (agree that a cycle lane on there would be good and would support), turn off on Glengarry, Trossachs, Hillsboro - turn left onto the little bit of cycle lane by the junction and then along Townley to Calton - lovely for cycling down to the square. Then can chose to cycle up Court Lane to the park and through, or down Dulwich Village - once you get to the Gallery there is a shared use path right the way to the College. I guess my point is that these locations are easy to cycle now. Busses are obviously tricky for the moment - but JAGS has been long term served by the 37 bus and I don't see huge take up of people using it in preference to driving there! How late to cycle through Burgess Park at night
northernmonkey replied to dulwichquine's topic in The Lounge
That was what sprung to mind for me too - it put me off but i think that was on the canal path rather than the main park. I think that from talking to friends - if you're doing it at 'peak hours' and there are lots of cyclists around people seem to feel ok with it (though do peak hours exist any more?) but otherwise maybe its worth planning an alternative route. I think i'd feel ok with going through the part of the park on CS17 but maybe not through the underpass and over to the canal path. -
Goose Green councillors - how can we help?
northernmonkey replied to jamesmcash's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Heartblock - i wholeheartedly support what you have written - these are all very sensible points. Also since the CPZ came in the stretch between the Charter School and JAGS has been transformed in terms of parking - adding a segregated cycle lane would provide a greater distance between homes / pedestrians and the pollution from cars. Even large scale EV adaotion won't do anything for particulate matter emissions so solutions are needed! Hire bikes would provide an easy way to get from Dulwich / PEckham to Brixton for the tube meaning that the overcrowded 37 wouldn't be as difficult to get on! -
There's a huge difference in cycling across to Hammersmith in the cold vs cycling under 3 miles to school. You'd be surprised at how little kids complain - where mine have complained it has been things like cold fingers and has been fixed with warmer gloves. Anyway - its these short journeys at peak times that need to stop most urgently and they're the most easily replaced by walking / scooting or cycling and in many cases are actually quicker than getting in and out of the car and finding a parking spot.
-
But for a lot of working parents, they use school breakfast and after school childcare or a childminder, so those same parents who are cycling now with kids would just need to cycle earlier with them and drop them at either of these. The idea that because people go back to work it would all need to change is what is unreasonable. The difficulty for parents is where they take public transport to work, working out whether they can cycle in work clothes (mostly yes though some dresses are challenging!), and whether there is secure parking near the station for bikes.

William Hill on Grove Vale
northernmonkey replied to kjhardy27's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I looked it up and it seemed to be a construction firm who owned it, but assume that?s just cos they?ve bought to sell on. Would love to know what it?s going to be- it?s massive compared to most of the units on grove vale -
No- but I see him around too and he makes me smile!
