  1. I've said this before, but think that the Nun's Head is the best Sunday lunch around especially for veggie options. I'm not convinced that toad in the hole is a great option - doesn't exactly go with yorkshire puddings and as a veggie my common complaint is that when I'm going out with friends who are all tucking into a roast dinner, I don't really want a risotto- I want a 'sunday lunch' too!!! Think that nut loaf is considered to be a bit dated now - but actually goes really well with roast veg and gravy - plus the gravy on the nun's head Sunday lunches is different from the meat ones so am assuming its veggie. Good value too - plus they usually have live jazz on which is a nice touch!
  2. Re a good veggie roast, went to the Old Nun's head for the 3rd time yesterday, the veggie nut loaf is good there (way better than the toad in the hole places insist on serving up as veggie options elsewhere), only thing is if you want a yorkshire pudding you have to request it, but its never a problem. Had the chocolate brownie for desert - its amazingly good, which makes the fact that it was served with cheapo soft scoop vanilla ice cream (you know, the type from your childhood, that is yellow and tastes of nothing) more bizarre - tip would be to go for cream!
  3. I used to love Green and Blue, but the past couple of times we've been in it hasn't been up to scratch. Since the Clapham one has opened it seems as though the owner isn't around as much (which is understandable), and the service has gone downhill. We used to be able to ask for recommendations for a bottle of wine, specifying type and budget and get some fantastic recommendations and info on the wine and drink it in lovely surroundings. Last time we went the staff could only talk about the bottles on the 'by the glass list' and didn't seem to have as much knowledge. Also on the previous couple of occasions the service has been generally a bit hopeless. The girl with long red-ish hair never writes anything down, but then forgets everything. The first time you think its a one off, but then it quickly becommes annoying. Add to that the fact that she short changed us and then when we pointed this out practically threw change at us. Overall I think its a real shame as I'm now reluctant to go back. I want this place to suceeed and like it in principle, but don't want to pay for hopeless and rude service.
  4. Not E Dulwich, but Masters Superfish on Waterloo Road (about 5 mins past the Old Vic as you walk away from Waterloo towards Elephant) does fantastic fish and chips. Its a licensed restaurant too. Its not a flash place and it is fully of black cab drivers, but to be recommended.
  5. Comments re East Dulwich: Insufficient trains between 7am and 9am. It makes no sense that there are more trains per hour after 9am than there are between 7am and 9am. Some of the services are getting very overcrowded and this will only worsen as more flats are built and the area becomes more popular with people who work in central London. London Bridge - Victoria Loop: If this line is lost people commuting to Victoria would have to go into London Bridge and then use the tube to cross London. This would have additional expense for commuters and also increase pressure on the London Bridge services.
  6. I wasn't trying to put people off the place, and certainly didn't want to get into debates around the legality of the service charges, just thought I'd point out that there are some 'teething troubles' that it would be good if they sorted out. My hope is that the owner / manager will read the forum and consider taking some of it on board. It has the potential to be a great pub with fantastic food, exactly what I want, I just think that its a shame that there are elements detracting from that at the moment.
  7. Went in on Sat lunch, food was lovely, but the place was empty. On entering we were asked if we'd like to take a seat (actually we were told to take one- service is v sweet but some things are a little lost in the translation!) but then service charge is automatically added to the entire bill. Like above poster, I didn't mind paying it, but think that when the place is empty and people are directed to tables as soon as they come in its a little off to then add 12.5% - especially as there's nothing indicating this on the menus. Some friends of ours also had a similar experience when they popped in for drinks in the opening week, place was empty and serving staff directed them to a table, then added 12.5% to the cost of their drinks.
