  1. Shirley - when you speak to the police n the next few days (assuming you give a witness statement) please be sure to ask for some counselling. You are right that the image in your head is likely to stick there and having some pro counselling early, might be helpful however strong you usually are or how well you usually cope with things. Condolences to the family and friends of the dead man - and thoughts with the drivers and any other witnesses
  2. What strikes me about that photo is how few passengers there appear to be - or have they all given up and started walking? And when traffic gets that heavy, you have to be a very confident cyclist to filter through it safely (I.e down the right side of the outer lane) It does feel like there has been lots of light rephasing lately that might also be contributing - there are a few that I rarely got stopped at that now seem to change to red just as the first wave of bikes/cars get there from the set before.
  3. I thought it was pretty much finished. I haven't seen any large vehicles or workmen for several weeks. I assumed the fenced off bits are where there needs to be planting works once things warm up.
  4. They've started work at Vauxhall too. I am so looking forward to cycling South on Vauxhall Bridge in a lane wider than my handle bars
  5. It is on TFL but only if you go to status page, amend drop down to bus, change date and put in an affected bus number. It doesn't seem to take account of it if you try to plan a journey - it's still telling me to get on a bus at Denmark Hill on Saturday morning even though stop will be closed. It says buses not serving stops between Camberwell Church St and East Dulwich Road. It does also list it as being 2000 Fri 13th to 0500 Mon 23rd (nightly - weekend only) but assuming the later end date is only if weather prevents work this weekend.
  6. Now if they rephased the traffic lights so that those keeping to 20mph never saw a red and those closer to 30 always saw a red, it might act as positive reinforcement. Agreed that you'll never get rid of the muppets who would pass three cars on wrong side of road or perhaps as I saw tonight, undertake a lorry stopped at lights, drive through the ASL (luckily avoiding the cyclists) and across the pedestrian area just to avoid getting stuck behind the lorry when he turned. D of course, got stopped by a set of lights further up the road so gained nothing...
  7. Yes - at The Cask in Pimlico, Tap East at Stratford and a few others that sell craft beers, I've seen beers at over ?12 a pint. They tend to be really high ABV brews so are intended to be drunk in 1/3s or 1/2s. The bar staff are generally pretty good at advising pre-pouring though. The opposite also tends to be true though - that lighter session beers tend to be cheaper.
  8. If the Horniman isn't out of area, nipping down the hill to Canvas and Cream (if they have an exhibition on) could be good and there are a few drinking establishments around there
  9. That did make me chuckle too... although I'm assuming he means that we can dismount and walk along the pavement. Really pleased to hear that Kings are getting a helipad... now we just need to get that second air ambulance to fully utilise it.
  10. Yikes. Best wishes for the victim; I hope it doesn't affect her too much. Glad the muggers didn't end up with the bag - let's hope they're caught soon.
  11. The Graudian redesign has grown on me although if it's a long article, it does feel ridiculously long now. I do like the revised blog post page which makes it much easier to see what's new for any particular day.
  12. Otta Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Some people are petrified of dogs, imagine ending > up next to one on a long haul flight... But presumably they might end up next to a guide dog for the blind or a hearing dog for the deaf so not sure what the distance is. Many other dogs can be well-behaved who will lie quietly at their owners feet for hours on end - probably more likely to sleep through a flight than children who tend to have a shorter attention span(and no, I'm not suggesting we ban them from flights) I might have a PTSD phobia of bearded men but I'm not going to suggest that all men on planes are clean-shaven.

You're right that I didn't go regularly before because in its last couple of guises, it wasn't very good. Poor food and poor beer. If it had been better, I would have gone regularly. It's not that far from residential streets - and in the ones behind that strip of shop and this end of Wood Vale and Sydenham Hill, this would be their closest pub in walking distance. I can't think of 5 pubs that are within 10 minutes walk of my house, let alone 15! We don't all live within walking distance of the main drag of LL. And while I agree that it's horribly congested at peak rush hour, it's not that bad the rest of the time. After 6.30 most nights, the South Circular is virtually empty. I cycle along it most nights after that time, and often there are only a handful of cars passing me.
  14. RIP indeed. Would have been fabulous as a good pub with interesting beers, good food with a BBQ/smoker/pizza oven out the back and rooms above. All we'll be left with is a disembodied voice on the buses announcing the Grove Tavern stop... until TFL rerecord something generic like 'Dulwich Common' ...of course, if retail opportunities means a Waitrose, I'll obviously retract my RIP and demand they demolish it asap
  15. No but the update on Thames Water says that it was updated at 5.16am so it looks like they've known about it for a while. They are saying low/no water and that they are working to fix.

Which is why there may be a name change as > it's not just him who thinks so. It's definitely not just him. There are quite a few newspapers and TV outlets in the US also refusing. There is the debate about why the Kansas City Chiefs whose (majority white) fanbase don feathered headgear and do a tomahawk chop after TDs don't seem to come in for the same.
  17. You can search on Southwark's website to see if the cherry or the ash has a preservation order on it. And if so, what permission was granted. Recently my neighbours' very large chestnut came down over two days because of honey fungus. It came down before the consultation was over. When the trees at the rear of my flat were threatened (random blokes starting to cut down quite a few) the local councillors (College) were brilliant and helped to get an emergency preservation order on all the trees. Might be worth speaking to yours if you are v concerned over the ash.
  18. I really dislike Lambeth Bridge - I feel safer going round Vauxhall. I find Lambeth more crowded and hate the roundabouts. I don't come via the Oval through - I head down via Stockwell from Brixton (this may change when the CS is upgraded) and come into Vauxhall from South Lambeth Road. I do go via Herne Hill though to get to Brixton. If you do go over Lambeth though, don't go via Victoria. It's horrible to cycle around at the moment because there are so many roadworks, I'd take the Embankment across.
  19. Take advantage of the council free cycling lessons. When I had mine, my instructor helped me find a suitable route, showed me how to ride at tricky junctions and gave me great advice on riding assertively. Really well worth it. 45 minutes isn't unrealistic unless you are totally unfit currently. Do remember to allow a little time to get changed at the other end and lock up your bike. Cycle commuting is awesome. It's one of the best bits of my day...
  20. Jeremy Wrote: > The craft keg beers are just too expensive.. > Kernel Table Beer and Harbour "India Brown" were > both ?5.80 a pint, as I recall. It's just too > much. That's utterly ridiculous particularly since the Kernel Table Beer is designed as a session ale with a low ABV. At nearly ?6 a pint, it's not going to be a long session! There are a few bars now that price their pints dependent on ABV which seems slightly more fair. At least you know if you spend ?8 on a pint there, you're probably only going to be having one!
  21. Looks amazing. Please let us know about any public meetings or help that you might need. I'm not on Facebook so hope you update here with news too.
  22. I think that's Sam the Wheel's house. He builds and repairs bike wheels and is reknowned for it so would suggest that those bikes on Railton Road are legit. Sorry to hear about your loss, gingertom. I think I've seen your son out on his Islabike before and he must be gutted. My only suggestion is to keep checking gumtree etc. Sometimes they don't end up on there until a few days to a week later. Good luck.
  23. I usually wear a helmet. I don't find it particularly onerous or weight to put on so why not? Since it is merely a piece of polystyrene, I have little faith that it will prevent really serious injury. However, as a vanity measure, it should help prevent road rash on the scalp and having to have my hair shaved off should I slip and skid along the road, then I'll wear it. Having said that, (touch wood), I've never skidded along the road on my commute (and we're into thousands of journeys) so how high risk is it? It is useful for attaching a high level light to. A few weeks ago, I did manage to leave the house on my commute and only realised half a mile down the road that I'd left my helmet at home. It did feel surprisingly good to have the wind in my ponytail and, this might be coincidental, but it also felt like motorists gave me a little more room. I don't always wear high-vis (I do in gloomy, foggy or dusky conditions) but I do always have reflectives on at dusk/night and several front/back lights.
  24. I thought that they only planted the last one on 11th. There are so many that I can't imagine that they'll all be 'uninstalled' within a day or two. It might also be a little less manic going on 12th/13th!
  25. Sylvan Post is good and quite quirky. Some love the decor, some find it a little laboured. Great drink selection. I think the place that Ruffers means is Canvas & Cream. It's lovely but a little more food/snack oriented. They do beer/wine but not sure on spirits.
