  1. The black traffic measuring cables often appear just before roadworks start. I have been told that they help determine the timings for temporary traffic lights. Of course, it might also be collecting data to justify any other proposals.

  3. Another happy customer here. Steve has fixed my 'antique' 15 yr old washing machine that needed new hoses. Appointment made and arrived promptly and fixed with no fuss.
  4. Keep me in the loop please. I've been a sourdough baker for a few years now and love it. As I have a small kitchen, I can't buy flour in bulk but still get 6 loaves out of a standard bag that's around ?1.70. I know how much times goes into good sourdough but given some economies of scale (you can make 10 just as easily as 1), the price of decent bread is ridiculous.

Not sure what diversions people were being sent on but aggressive drivers weren't helping by blocking junctions and carrying on through reds. Even on the bike last night, I got off and pushed at points to find room at Vauxhall to get to a clear but if road. When Herne Hill flooded, it took a couple of weeks to reopen so probably worth thinking through alternatives wherever possible.
  6. There are signs up at the bottom of Cox's walk saying that they are doing footpath works with an estimated completion date of early August. Unless those are much further down Dulwich Common, I haven't seen any sign of what they are actually doing. I think it's a great idea to try to tie into a cycling Quietway but wouldn't hold breath on funding. CS5 with Vauxhall's priority gyratory was being discussed before the Olympics and is only just being built in part. But pedestrians and cyclist groups should lobby together more as two large groups of vulnerable road users. Sadly there's far more cash in the motorists camp.
  7. I think you're right. It's changed or the definition of peak hours has. The traffic appears heavier in the morning (when I try to exit out of Melford Rd at 8ish) and then I've seen a few close shaves in the evening (8-9pm) with cars turning right at the Grove while there's still oncoming traffic coming northwards.

Except that unless you have a Travelcard or have reached your cap for the day, you then end up paying for up to 3 fares to switch between night buses. I wish London could do as other major cities do and link up bus/train travel a little more. In other cities, you pay a train/tube fare and then get free bus travel for another hour or so to complete your journey. Or you buy a bus fare and can transfer to another bus within the same period. I realise it would have been tricky to do this in the past but with Oyster/contactless cards, it surely wouldn't be that hard to take the equivalent of your bus fare off a tube fare if you'd used it within the last x minutes or ignore a bus touch-in if you were switching route.
  9. My longest serving kettle was a blue plastic Boden one that made it 17 years before giving up the ghost last year. Then again, I only boil it a couple of times a week at most so perhaps if it had been used more frequently, it might have only made it to 2 years.
  10. The freeholder who originally owned the freehold on the house that I live in and next door, enclosed the back of the garden and only left the basement flats with gardens. As there was access to the rear of the gardens from elsewhere, I suspect that he hoped (hopes) to build on them at some point - there are some very old sheds stuck at the back. As there's been nothing on the land for years, the trees that are there are mature and there are stag beetles and the like. Last summer, we saw people with chain saws in the back of the garden starting to chop trees down and got in touch with the council. They were brilliant. They arranged for emergency TPOs to be in place within days while instructing the men to stop work. The TPOs were then converted into full ones within a month or so. There hadn't been any planning applications in when the TPOs went on. This was in College Ward - but sure any of the local councillors would be able to help potentially.
  11. Buses are allowed to make the turn into Underhill coming from FH. Would it add that much more traffic to allow cars to do the same? I cycle so am fortunate that I can take the cycle crossing near Wood Vale and legally turn but on the occasions where I am with a driver it is really convoluted.

  13. Black cabs in central London are great - particularly if you're in a group wearing heels and where you are going isn't handy for a Tube stop. Side roads, missing jams, all great. Out of London, the Knowledge tends to be a bit more sparse. Last one I hailed here was just after I missed a bus and had to get to Brixton to get a Tube to airport with a heavy case. He took me a ridiculous route which ad heavy traffic rather than any side route - despite knowing I was in a hurry and disregarding suggestions I made - I cycle there most days and know a few quieter ones. I ended up getting out at the Ritzy because he had got confused and running down road to station to find the next bus there. So it cost me ?20 and saved me no time. Never again. As a cyclist, I hate their tendency to pull over with complete disregard for cyclists and others. Saw one yesterday stopped on a corner at Vauxhall Bridge causing havoc with traffic and pedestrian crossings. And I'd prefer them not being in bus lanes unless to make a pick up/drop off on pavement there. With no/one passenger why should they get the time benefits that public transport gets?
  14. I do recall reading that a raised (usually red) platform indicates a pedestrian crossing when they were being installed around work but this was when lots of traffic calming experiments were being brought in there like no/minimal road markings too. I thought the idea was that it should slow traffic at the junction and potentially make it easier for pedestrians to cross. However, at most it should act like a zebra crossing where pedestrians should only step out if safe to do so but once on the crossing have the right of way. I suspect if you had been a car, the family may not have crossed but as a slower cyclist, expected you would be able to stop so it was safe to do so. As a fellow cyclist, I probably would have been more considerate and let you pass first as I appreciate it is a bit more effort to start from a standstill on a bike than it is as a pedestrian to put one foot in front of the other. I'd also suggest that from a road safety point of view, it's probably safer to teach kids to wait until nothing is coming since they can't judge speed and stopping distances until quite a bit older.
  15. Thanks dc for that link. Much appreciated
  16. Feels bizarre when the original thread is so old but I haven't got a polling card. I found the letter from earlier this year which says if everything is correct I don't need to do anything but if additional voters use x code to update. Nothing - I am assuming polling station stays the same as previous elections but is there somewhere I can check?
  17. Was he on a Giant bike? Just that I saw a guy with an orange backpack today on South Lambeth Road about 15-20 mins later who was also cycling inconsiderately. Love that American's idea too
  18. No negatives from me unless you count regretting that the cafe/bar is fairly small so might be tough to get a seat in. Seats are very comfortable, the rake (that makes me think of Borough Market) isn't psrticularly steep but the fact that the seats can recline slightly encourages people to slide down so even a shortass like me could see. The food, drinks and snacks have something for everyone - prices vary! And Alan Rickman came across as a lovely guy with an interesting outlook on life - although the young guy asking the questions could probably use fewer words and less of his own thoughts when posing them in future.
  19. I can see Shaila's point. It might have been nice for the PH marketing team to contact members in the new catchment and ask them if they wanted to swap their home cinema - and be counted as an ED member. Or offer them spare seats if there were any left. After all, founder members have been able to use the others during the wait.
  20. They must be reasonably secure. There have been two on Railton Road (Herne Hill to Brixton) for the last year which appear to be full of bikes when I go past. Add me to those who eould like to see more of them - even outside my house so long as I get first dibs on getting a space in it! Design-wise, they are functionally sound. Easy to open/close and with good protection from the elements which is really important for many bike owners. I don't mind leaving mine outside the pub/gym in the rain for a few hours but I don't want it out there for days on end. I've never been entirely convinced of the mesh ends that let people see how full they are. However, I've seen far uglier multiple racks. There's one near Herne Hill station which is the vertical outline of an orange car with six bike racks attached to it. No protection from weather and no better than regular Sheffield stands or cyclehoops in terms of functionality. I believe the bike hangers are made by a company based in Forest Hill (or used to be) so not too far to travel with aesthetic suggestions
  21. Phones are apparently back up and lots of tickets left according to Twitter. Only session that is booked out is the 5pm Sunday one. I ended up on the phone for 20 minutes earlier today - so yes, try not to do it from a mobile
  22. There are a couple of abandoned ones - presumably stolen - on Wood Vale at the Horniman end. So if you've had a grey Honda taken, it may be there. They have been reported but still there for now.
  23. Hmmm... I ran round the park clockwise when training for a half marathon but I always cycle around it anti- clockwise. Perhaps after only 16 years here, my localness is only skin-deep ;p
  24. In this case though, it is inconsiderate parking. There are cones out to stop people parking along the middle of that stretch of road. If you are then daft enough to park there - making it harder for those who legitimately parked at the sides to manoeuvre - then you can't really complain about being ticketed. It's a pity they don't re-open the Grove's car park for the summer months to act as a useful overflow car park for Dulwich Park and the Horniman. Would take the pressure off local residential roads - it's amazing how many motorists 'forget' not to park across driveways on sunny weekends.
  25. The description says they will only just be visible from one to thd next so assume this isn't their final positioning. I do hope I can still see them from the carriageway as I cycle through
