  1. I?ve noticed increase in coaches and skip lorries as they thunder over the speed bumps so please let me know if you have a meeting. Although if I?m honest, I?m disturbed more by the LCY planes.
  2. I still don?t see the relevance to ED general issues other than stirring things elsewhere. I?m quite sure most of us have met someone at some point who we have thought was fine but others find heinous. I tend not to vet every casual acquaintance?s personal history or views. I am sure most of us have a few skeletons in the closet. All these cloak and dagger insinuations don?t feel particularly adult and I?m not sure why I?d give them more weight than the experience I?ve had. I?m not saying that I agree with Chris? approach or views at times but this doesn?t feel like an appropriate place to air dirty laundry where the person whose underwear it is can?t respond.
  3. I?m not sure I see the relevance of this thread to local EDF issues. It seems to exist just to stir things up and slag off the ?infamous Mr Beach?. I moderate on se23.life after being asked to as a level-headed type soul. I?ve met Chris twice - while cleaning the wall for the Forest Hill mural and at a forum drink. At that point, he did live locally. There are a group of mods all who lived locally and some of which still do. We challenge each other and there?s more visibility of mod actions there than here -after discussion with the forum membership. We share different politics, hobbies and interests. I suspect most forum members don?t care about the politics of them. I?m not particularly interested in either version of the SE26 forum as I don?t live or visit Sydenham. I belong to EDF because I live just inside Southwark and visit Lordship Lane. I was on SE23.com for years and vaguely remember some of the disappearing members and arguments. But when it started to get very quiet, I stumbled across SE23.life which was more active, seemed friendlier, had more modern software and felt more relevant and open (eg allowing business recommendations etc). I?m posting this as a reasonably active and long term member of three of the forums mentioned. for the suspicious minded (I?ve been here long enough to know there are a few) I?m not posting this because Chris has asked me to and I?m doing it as a local resident rather than with my mid hat on)
  4. And the cabinet is still there. I?ve been in a couple of times since they opened and each time, every other person who arrived at the bar commented how great it was to be able to get a drink locally. Think it will take some time to establish itself and then, I guess we?ll see if there would enoughdenand for the far bigger Grove to re-open. I can?t see that as a bar/restaurant only but could have seen it as an inn with rooms until the two proposals for hotels at Forest Hill went in
  5. Bodeans has gone massively downhill in the last year or so - or at least Soho has. The Hippodrome Casino is more fun. Would love somewhere more local with good food and drink
  6. I think a tree is a lovely way to remember John. I am another who he touched with interesting maps online and book suggestions in the shop. My first tree suggestions would be to ask if he had any favourites? Secondly, how about a tree traditionally used to make paper? A mulberry perhaps? There is an Oriental plane tree which is known as a Chenar tree - not quite the same as the tree would be slightly different from the London planes?
  7. We?ve recently had a dropped kerb put in. We?d asked the council before and been refused as too close to traffic humps that at the time required 5m clearance each side. That didn?t seem to stop people parking over them in any case! This time, we applied, they came out and said they could do it and gave a price which we went ahead with. Yes, it stops a space on the road. But as the house has been converted into flats, it takes 3 cars off the road so a net gain for neighbours. Council advised that they won?t put a white line across as that means nothing. But they can ask the PCN officers to include it in patrols and enforce if required. Admittedly as I don?t own a car, I?m unlikely to be impacted either way😝
  8. Captain Marvel Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > 'Do be careful what you wish for' > A crossing there, ensuring the safety of imaginary > pedestrians will make it unimaginably worse. Presumably, it will be a 'request' phase rather than a standard part of the sequence. So if there are no imaginary pedestrians, it won't impact the light sequence. But the real pedestrians will still get a benefit. Don't underestimate the number there. There might not be people waiting to cross on every set of light changes but I sit at the front of the ASL on my bike most commute days and see quite a few trying to scuttle across when they can. The traffic along Dulwich Common has been far worse since the junction at the top of the hill (Wood Vale, Sydenham Hill, London Road) was changed a few years back. The change there to the road layout and lights there - and at the junction outside the Horniman didn't improve anything.
  9. Thanks Taran for confirming and an opening date... I'm looking forward to it
  10. Wow! This has been requested for a long time last time it was resurfaced, we lost the ASL box so good to hear. I?ll definitely fill it in. Thank you for pointing out
  11. Years ago, I had my handbag snatched. The police recommended screaming if you feel threatened before doing anything else like hailing people or going to doors. I did end up screaming during the attack at which multiple neighbours looked out to check all ok and called police. They all said they didn?t mind being disturbed in those circumstances. Either you scare them off, or you get police alerted faster. In my case, one guy leapt into his car and gave chase. As his wife said, not sure what he?d do if he caught him as only had his pants in 😝
  12. I know a few people who travel to a good beer stop. And a tap-style which gives opportunities to experiment with thirds etc is something we don?t have many of in this neck of the woods. I travel into ED or FH for other drinks cuisines - it?s not exactly a tough ask with 5 buses stopping within 100m. Not to mention the groups who do the Green Chain Walk etc - a good outdoor spot at the bottom of the hill will be great.
  13. Can think of two other options but they might take slightly longer 42 bus from ED goes to Liverpool Street and then the train. Fewer steps and changes potentially but not sure how long the first bus might take - possibly an hour tho at 6ish might not be too bad. Or bus/ taxi to Brixton, Victoria line to Tottenham Hale and get on Stansted train there. But suspect that route has a few sets of stairs.
  14. I'm excited! I love a good tap room style bar. Although having looked at the twitter feed, I'm now seriously tempted to track down some of Siren's Gin and Tonic Gose!
  15. My panniers are the Ortlieb ones where you need to pull up on the ?handle? to release the clips. I often clip the closing strap over the top of the handle which makes it less easy to get off quickly as you need to do both actions. I started doing it after seeing a guy stopped at the traffic lights lose a bag to a passerby who ran off.

  17. A lot depends on when his start is - and whether transport is running at that point. I rode it when I did it although being near the Horniman, it was mostly a downhill glide! Going through the Blackwall Tunnel was an experience! There are so many roads closed that there's a limit to how close a cab or you might get with a bike - quite a few were dropped off in Greenwich IIRC. On the way home, if he doesn't feel like riding it (don't under estimate the power of picking up the medal and a break at the Mall) then I'd suggest a gentle trundle to Victoria and hop on a train to Peckham Rye (so he doesn't have to go up and over Dogkennel Hill) Good luck to him - it's a brilliant day out. You spend the first 20 minutes automatically changing gear and braking for lights and then once you've finished, mentally reminding yourself that you need to stop at them!
  18. I?m in a similar situation but on the other side. When the house was turned into flats, the freeholder kept 2/3rds of the garden as it has private access - along with the plot next door. When we acquired the freehold, we asked about also getting the back of the garden as it?s completely overgrown and has had nothing done to it in the last 20 years. He refused as, we believe, he hopes to build out it some day despite numerous tree preservation orders being in place.
  19. There is a temporary 3-way traffic light at ED station that is causing congestion to/from DKH. Traffic backed up to GG one way and top of DKH the other. Give yourself more time or avoid it
  20. I gave my Mum my old iPhone 6 rather than selling it although I?d have described it as excellent condition. Within a month or so, it started restarting regularly despite never doing so before. Turned out there was some corrosion on the internal battery connection. We will never know whether that damaged happened at my end or st hers so if she had paid for it, I wouldn?t have refunded her. Seller might not have been trying to pull a fast one. It?s wortb taking into Genius Bar to get them to diagnose. Doesn?t cost anything but a train fare and they might be able to fix (for a price admittedly)
  21. sally buying Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Ever tried carrying > shopping on any London bus route? Yes. I could afford a car but choose not to have one with the result that I?ve carried lots of shopping on bus, train, Tube, bike, wheeled case etc as appropriate over the last 2 decades. In the last year alone, I have brought back 100 litres of compost, bedding plants, a curtain rail, a laundry basket, a vacuum cleaner, a new set of tableware, bike tyres, paint pots and countless groceries. (Cue the generation game music - I missed the cuddly toy) Admittedly some of it might have been easier with a car but I?ve always thought that the price of running a car would pay for a few cab journeys if really necessary. And I prefer to at least give getting home without one a go. More people shop several times a week rather than doing the weekly shop these days and it?s not hard to carry a couple of bags unless you are truly frail or incapacitated.

There are no CJ or LB trains from Peckham Rye or Denmark Hill. They are bus only. There are trains from Forest Hill at the times listed above.
  23. Scottfield Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Cyclists shouldn't be riding on the pavements > really. > I suspect that these are 'shared use' pavements. Sally's too much of a cycling ambassador to suggest any social irresponsibility. The bike trains that she helps promote show less confident cyclists how to use the roads more assertively too to help them on normal bike rides too.
  24. Cinderella is posting their excitement to all the the local forums whether ir not they benefit. Most others are losing trains so suspect joy will be in the low side. Denmark Hill May now be the Buttons line. Tractorlad - I cycle most days but there are times (really wet with an important meeting, going out for drinks etc) where having the back up of a reliable train service is welcome.
