Overhill/Belvoir/Underhill roads being used as a bypass
Applespider replied to bobbsy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip

I?m more whining about the length of time this is taking to fix and the hassle of multi-stop walks. The increased traffic hasn?t bothered me other than irate tooting. But no, I don?t own a car. Does that mean I?m allowed to whine? 😂 I?m wondering how many of those making light of the situation have been even remotely affected? -

Thames Water Twitter feed says their permit lasts til Fri pm. There may not be a quick resolution 😣 -

Nothing - just my left and right are mixed up this morning 😝 Driverless cars - probably easier than drivers. The electronic traffic maps showed the closures pretty quickly. -

I watched people drive down Sydenham Hill this morning - discover no right turn (road layout means that?s only option) so they took a left. Unfortunately that meant driving into the green filter lane for oncoming traffic trying to get up the hill. As Wood Vale is open, there were a few. The mind boggles 😳 -
Siduhe - I also reported when crossing the road became a stream! I wish there was a 'current' location option for reporting leaks - so much easier than trying to work out street numbers/postcodes. Doesn't surprise me that it's taking longer than estimated; looking at the Twitter video from earlier there seemed to be a fair mess - bubbling up through the slabs on the opposite side etc. Thames Water have an 8 week programme of work scheduled to start around here in mid-Feb to put in plastic pipes. Let's hope this stops this happening quite so frequently.

Heathrow consultation and ED
Applespider replied to colville09's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The majority of low flying planes over our area are to LCY rather than LHR. We are in the unfortunate position of having both depending on wind direction with few days of neither. As someone who has gone from barely noticing the LHR flights to having several thousand LCY going directly overhead without any consultation, don?t underestimate the impacting can have. -
Heathrow consultation and ED

We are affected more by City flights since they added a flight path directly over us in 2017. Barely noticed planes before that. Now I can?t have windows open on easterly days as the planes drown out the TV. City say that it?s only 30% of days but still adds up to over 10,000 planes per year! -
I hope it doesn?t prove anything like the pain the Dartmouth Road traders in Forest Hill went through. Their works which included todying up pavements etc overran by months and snagging appears to be ongoing.

Sally Eva Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > they are relatively new -- maybe 5yrs ish Which, as far as I recall, is after the last major shut-down. How unfortunate although I'm still a little surprised there's no room. The 'three' bus rule didn't seem to a problem when the junction of Blenheim Grove and Rye Lane and temp lights and the bus stop still running. The bus drivers and passengers seemed to cope. However, as a pedestrian, I do think that I'd rather walk along Rye Lane later in the evening (as Sally says, it's relatively busy with quite a few businesses open late) and wait outside Tesco rather than wait on the much quieter Copeland Rd. It's more the morning that I've heard the change being bemoaned when people are running late for a train and it's a further jog to just make it than the stop under the bridge.

So are the zebra crossing and built-out pavements in Copeland Road relatively new? I don't think the bus frequencies have created more volume. Or have the rules changed in the last few years? As was mentioned upthread, on both previous occasions when Rye Lane was closed for months, there was a stop there.

Experienced the one-way system for the first time today where there was also a platform change. The good news is that they are only enforcing the one way exit when a train actually arrives so if there is a platform change, they will let you go the ?wrong? way. There was a bit of congestion/confusion today at the bottom of the old footbridge as people got off the train at their ?usual? and hadn?t encountered the change before. Suspect regulars will figure out the carriage for the new exit soon enough and reduce this. Didn?t seem to do anything to reduce the crowd at the gates though - which isn?t helped outside by the clutter of bins and free mag stands nor by the people pitched immediately outside to hand out magazines or ask for a hand out.

Incidentally for those in the area, there?s a sign outside DBD saying they are starting a pub quiz on Weds evenings.

185 bus (I have found it to be exceptionally poor)
Applespider replied to EDNate's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Going back to the 185, in recent days it has seemed to end up appearing on the tracker in distinct waves. Three in less than 5 minutes and then nothing for 15-20 minutes. Some bus routes regularly have ?held here to regulate the service? messages. I?m trying to recall whether the 185 is one of them. Perhaps their usual coordinator is off! -
Denmark Hill station entrance shambles
Applespider replied to Ginster's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
When I suggested havoc, it wasn?t because I don?t think the theory is sound. But that in practice, it will be painful particularly as it?s only really needed for an hour at either end of the working day. You?ll need signage and barriers on each platform to stop people going the wrong way, or getting het up and just barfmging past everyone. That doesn?t cover those legit accessibility reasons to go the ?wrong? way. People getting on/off buses and in a hurry to catch them will end up careering across the road more than they do now. It may seem easy and logical but people are broadly in the camp of doing what is perceived to be least effort - hence worn grass paths instead of using s right angled pavement. It would be interesting to know the directions most passengers come from - and build temporary routes based on those. If the bridge had exits at both ends (to the bus stop rather than the walk back up the ramp) I guarantee the new bridge would be used more. It?s great to think we can design for the ideal world but sadly we don?t live in one. -

One way system in and out? Are they nuts? That will cause worse havoc! -
185 bus (I have found it to be exceptionally poor)
Applespider replied to EDNate's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I find the 185 more frequent than 176/197. At rush hour, it takes an age to get from Denmark Hill to Vauxhall. I usually follow rendallharris?s advice to get off at Denmark Hill or Oeckham Rye and take train to Victoria. If you get a tube to Green spark anyhow, it?s likely to cap fare. They aren?t quite as well timed as in the past but bring my commute from near Horniman to Victoria down to 40-45minutes. Until a week or so ago, the 176/197 were on diversion between Sydenham and the Hornima. That did make them less likely to get snarled up in the South Circular traffic which has been dreadful through Forest Hill since they changed the road layout at the Horniman a couple of years ago. That diversion did make those routes substantially quieter and the 185 busier during October. I do entirely understand the disinclination to even think about cycling at this time of year - and I am a cyclist! But don?t rule it out once the lighter nights return. The council cycle training is amazing for boosting confidence and skills. Honestly, I find riding into Victoria less stressful than driving it these days. There are two bus routes over to Brixton. The P4 (would advise school holidays only) as otherwise it can take 45 minutes to go three miles. And the 37 though you?d be changing at Goose Green - and by the time I get there, I usually think it?s as easy to carry on to Denmark Hill. I?m not sure where they?d put a third without just duplicating one or other of the existing routes. If you can walk down towards North Dulwich, both buses speed up from there. -

They used to credit the amount to your TW account and you had to remember to check it had appeared. Earlier this year, there were water woes around SE22/23 edges and this time, they sent a cheque. Somewhat cynically, I did wonder whether they'd decided that not everyone would cash the cheque so they might get away with 90% take up rather than the direct credit. However, it might be because it's more tangible and visible for those expecting it.

Angelina Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > are they being removed? I've not noticed - not > everyone has a smartphone so I would be surprised. Don't think they're being removed but just not replaced or new ones added. You can apparently text the bus stop number and they'll send a text with the bus countdown details - if you don't have a smartphone. I'm more concerned about having to have your phone out at a stop with all the chat about moped thieves. The lower frequency of some buses doesn't help. People have to wait longer, the busier the bus, the more stops it has to make and the longer to get on/off so the less people will rely on it. A vicious cycle of decline - and I also ride a bike quite a bit simply because it's more reliable.

Ah - but when I made those comments, it was in General ED issues. It's been moved.
