  2. Over the weekend, my team were getting a new desk in the office and to fit it in, we were giving up a filing cupboard. The only thing in the cupboard was the Christmas tree which we took out, and thinking it was too early to put it up, put it to one side in multiple pieces. Got in this morning to find the office movers had installed the new desk and PC... and built up the Christmas tree in a prime location in the office.
  3. Any kind of crafts that he might be interested in? Woodturning perhaps if he was a DIY lover? Pottery/sculpture? The only other experience I have of being stuck inside with nothing to do is on long plane flights when I resort to Killer So Duku and knitting (pre 9-11) which I'm guessing may not be suitable?
  4. Bear in mind that it might not be their idea not to use the garden. About 2/3rds of our 'long' back garden is brambles and home to foxes. The closest third is used by the basement flat. Unfortunately, the back 2/3rds belongs to the old freeholder of the house who would one day like to build on it since there is an access road to the back. So while we'd love to use it, we're not allowed to - and there's no access from the closest third. When we bought the freehold of the house, he still refused to allow access to the land. I'd agree with womanofdulwich that offering to 'rent' it might be the best idea. The neighbour may not be allowed to sell depending on mortgage etc but if they really are unable to look after it for whatever reason, they may be happy for someone to knock it into shape and use it since presumably, they'd have a nicer outlook.
  5. DJQ - there are better out there... although it does depend what you like. If you are going rabbit-esque, then focus on the ears...
  6. Indeed - although luckily no injury... and the next 20 miles took the residue off...
  7. When I've had flights that early, I've gone the 176 route. Not quite so bad on a Sunday night/Monday morning but when you do it on a Fri/Sat, you do end up feeling like the only sober person on the bus. I'd seriously consider looking into a mini-cab - either just to Victoria or ask for a price to the airport itself. I have also stayed at the Yotel there - arriving at 11ish and then just getting up and leaving at 6ish. Think it cost around ?40 a few years back and meant I got an extra few hours of sleep...
  8. Phew.... glad to hear she got it back. Might be worth sticking a name and number in the back/front too so that if anyone did find it, they could give a call...
  9. And cobbles... the ones on the way out of Dulwich Park can be a menace... Remind me... why do we do this...
  10. On the P4, you'll quite often hear the radio tell the bus ahead to wait at next stop to pick up passengers from terminating bus. But it is annoying especially if you have list of bags or are pleasantly ensconced in a seat.
  11. Buy one of those magic egg timers that change colour. It truly is magic and my eggs have been perfect every time with it...
  12. I'm on the look out for commemorative bobblehead dolls.... It's probably a thread of its own - what is the tackiest/oddest bit of commemorative memorabilia that they'll come up with...
  13. Is it a direct flight or does it involve a change in the US? Continental used to codeshare with Virgin so you could sometimes get a good Continental deal and end up flying Virgin (which if you'd booked directly would have been dearer).
  14. I wanted to shout at an idiot cyclist tonight but since I was a pedestrian, I figured he'd ignore me whatever I called him. He was at the lights in Brixton weaving stupidly wearing black, no front light and apparently no rear light. The car in the lane next to him wasn't going particularly fast and was staying back but when he did cross into that lane (so that he could cycle across the pedestrian crossing which was on red man with no-one pedestrians crossing), he stopped and started shaking his fist and badmouthing the driver. Then he cycled across the remainder of the crossing (dodging a bus) and off. He did have a rear light - it was a tiny spark of one - utter tosser.
  15. I haven't washed mine either - but they have leather/suede bits so it never occurred to me. I suspect if I had full fingered fabric ones I might. Then again, my ski gloves haven't got smelly either so perhaps my hands just don't sweat that much?!
  16. I'm a flat dweller and since our communal garden has a large tree, we bought (as a group) a relatively cheap brush/rake to use on both the 'garden' and the pavement. A brush is hardly expensive (it's not like insisting on a large powered leafblower) and snow shovels can be had for a few pounds. You'd get both brush and shovel for well under ?10 One thing on snow-clearing though is what happens with grit. My family still live in Scotland where there are grit 'skips' every few hundred metres and it's quite common for people to clear the pavement in front of their homes of snow. The council fill the grit bins and then residents grab a bucket (also fairly cheap) to carry some home for the pavement and drive. Do we have grit bins down here?
  17. People struggle to get over the hump on Vauxhall Bridge on a Boris bike - I'd hate to see them attempt Denmark Hill. Never tried a fixie and not sure I'd trust myself not to make a numpty of myself. Heck, I occasionally forget when I'm on a spinning bike that can't just stop pedalling so not entirely convinced it would be a good idea somewhere that there are several tonnes of metal boxes flying around.
  18. We had a tannoy message at 1055 to warn people and then an announcement at 11. This year, the email that went round the day before reminded people that it was supposed to be a time to reflect so they didn't really want to hear the clacking of keyboards as people just worked through quietly.
  19. Oooh... I missed this and a not too serious cycle group sounds fun. Sadly I'm away this weekend... will put a note in the diary for 21st though
  20. Awesome.... thanks Sandperson! And even reflective bits for signalling on the backs... Will definitely look into those
  21. It's my toes that go first... Brrrrrr! I wanted to try mittens on the bike since I know they keep my fingers warmer when I'm out in snow but can't quite see how I'd change gear easily in them. Hmmm, perhaps 'flipper style' mittens with three 'compartments' so that the middle one can still reach the gear and the other one, the brake.
  22. There are two - on either side of Vauxhall Cross but they are pretty much always full. One of those 'supersized' one is definitely required.
  23. Definitely - now if they could find somewhere at Vauxhall to do something similar, it would be v useful.
  24. I like Dusseldorf. The Altstadt is good - the Schlosser Alt bier is better and yes, there are Christmas markets. You can also hop on the fast train to Cologne (under an hour and cheap) and go to their better Christmas markets and see the Dom there. Actually, I'd fly to Dusseldorf and stay in Cologne... but try to drink the Alt bier over Kolsch
  25. However, if you didn't go in by Cox's Walk but walked up closer to Dulwich Common, there's a gate there which is a normal size which bikes/buggies etc can go through which seems to defeat the purpose even more!
