When to disrupt schooling for a move?
monniemae replied to simonethebeaver's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I moved in what would now be year 6 for two terms before secondary; it was fine and if the school was going to be full of kids going to the same secondary might be q nice for child 2 to make some friends before scary big school. I still forever resented being yanked out of London just as I was old enough to start being interested in it but I imagine that would be massively amplified for a 15/16 year old. Depends where you're moving to though of course! Fwiw my younger brother was 7 so year... 3? when we moved and he struggled much more than me though it sounds like yours would be a bit older - from what I remember reading it's 4-7 yr olds that find moving hardest (in primary aged kids) -
No worries but I'm popping back to say - do you still have hip pain? PLEASE don't do yoga until you've spoken to midwife or GP I thought yoga & swimming were helping me and I've suddenly developed a really painful limp - which is suspected SPD / PGD - am waiting for a physio referral but both of these things are now out for me and may very well have exacerbated the condition In particular the "open leg" poses and squats... so avoid these if you are still having hip pain (I threw myself into them as had no idea they could be bad or that I could be getting SPD) hth, Rachel x

To report a crime call 101 to speak to local police, also worth contacting the Southwark dog warden if you're worried. And if it might have been a pitbull type dog ie a banned breed you can call the Met status dog unit or flag it up to local police / the safer neighbourhood team as they're obliged to escalate the investigation. Probably more useful and will help more people than posting on this forum... -
Just to add - that's assuming it's H&M, supermarkets, etc type clothing - if higher end high street, ie john lewis, M&S, Next, Gap etc I'd pay ?1 per item

I'm expecting a girl in September but personally I'd love unisex bundles. I've kept my eye out for basics and small sizes but everything is either pink/purple butterflies or blue/brown tractors. So if you were able to offer, perhaps as well as gendered bundles, neutral / unisex bundles whether plain or bright colours I'm sure there'd be a market in that! I'm not the only person looking for this kind of thing. Price / size wise I'd be happy to buy either smaller bundles eg of 5-10 babygrows, or a bunch of leggings etc, or a larger mixed bundle. For plainer items such as vests, tshirts, all in ones, I'd not want to pay more than 50p per item; for outdoor type stuff, jumpers etc it would depend on the quality. But to be honest if I saw a bundle of which I'd use more than half (currently, I think well I'd only used a small proportion of that), I might pay more. Hth x

There's one in Nunhead near the station on Tuesday evenings, search the forum for Catherine Arnold yoga. The Sunshine Centre in Brockley/Crofton Park does classes on a saturday morning but you have to sign up for 6 weeks. Also if you can get to Peckham, sat mornings with Barbara Mela at Gaia centre are great and you can drop in (if you let her know beforehand).

New kitchen ideas and thoughts...
monniemae replied to bluesuperted's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We got matt handleless which we thought was less stark than gloss; we couldn't find them anywhere at the time so bought Schuller units (brill german brand) but cheaply from a distributor in scotland. Very well made. Ruled out Ikea because the units aren;t standard so you can't in the future change as easily plus the fitting is more complicated, and as it all comes flatpacked you end up paying much more for the fitter. Also liked the look of Wren but didn't visit a showroom. We got drawers which are more expensive but they are AMAZING for storage, especially food storage, much better than cupboards. Another great option which we didn't go for was a floor-to-ceiling pull out pantry. Such a good use of space and you can get them even in q narrow widths. We got concrete worktops but I'd probably choose something else if we did it again (we love, but quite porous and wood would have been cheaper / easier). We have a few vintage lamps in different areas (incl. clamps) as this was cheaper than including additional light options much as LED shelves would be great! Get more sockets than you think you need. Don't bother with an island if you don't have much space. personally I think breakfast bars make a space feel smaller... Get storage built up high, we have high open shelves but get units ceiling height if possible. See if there's anywhere else to store stuff - basement, hall cupboard etc - we have bulky items like loo roll, washing powder and multipacks of tinned tomatoes etc in a hall cupboard outside our kitchen. Also if you have an awkward or unused bit of space you might be able to fit a dresser or shelves there - we have a small vintage dresser in which we've managed to hide loads of bits we don't use everyday. Fridge wise - we got a massive fridge and we love it. Not built in. Can store so much food! Oh and the mumsnet property/diy section is a great source of info, as is housetohome for inspiration. -
Kings antenatal - consultant referral for fibroid?
monniemae replied to monniemae's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Thanks for these, also had lovely PM from someone with similar experience so feel a bit more relaxed. Will call MAU(don't have a named midwife yet...) -
Just wondered if anyone else had experience at Kings of pregnancy with large, obstructive fibroid? I was told by GP and at first mw appointment to expect a referral to the consultant, that I'd see them by my second scan (I think the GP said the first scan). However no one's referred me and the midwives since have been very dismissive of the reasons - I udnerstand they must see a huge proportion of women with fibroids and that 99% of the time they aren't a problem. Mine however is huge (12 x 12 at 12 week scan, and growing) and attached to the cervix, blocking the exit. The sonographer was clear that the type of fibroid I have, and where it is, is not going to be able to move out of the way. Presumably it may shrink but again the kind of fibroid makes that unlikely apparently. At my last midwife appointment I asked again about complications, implications etc, and the midwife again was dismissive / unconcerned, saying that I'd get scanned again at 32, 36 weeks etc. She didn't look at the notes about where it is and the notes from sonographer and GP and earlier gynacology reports. I'm not really worried as I know whatever happens it will get addressed eventually, but at this stage - 22 weeks - my friend who was with Lewisham had seen a consultant about her fibroids, and I'm also alarmed that no one has talked to me about complications although I've asked. Google tells me that I'm at increased risk of PPH and premature delivery but I've no idea if this is accurate or not! Any thoughts from anyone who's had similar preg experiences at Kings?

very nasty cough - 3/4 month old???
monniemae replied to Saila's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Is it worse after feeds? Is it worse at night? Is it utterly random or is there any kind of pattern to it? Asthmas is v unlikely in children under two if there is no other family history of asthma / eczema etc x -
Resusable nappies - honest feedback please
monniemae replied to monniemae's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Wow thanks for all the feedback everyone! Think I shall go for a mix and match approach and see what works for us, and try to get a few second hand so I don't have to commit to loads of new nappies that might not be right for us. The Nappy Lady was great and recommended Bambinex Teddies which are microfibre, and Charlie Banana, so if anyone's used any of these or has any second hand to offload please let me know x -
I'm considering using resuables for our first baby (due Sept) and have read lots from enthusiasts along with fully dismissive comments from people who've never tried them... My partner is sceptical but open to persuasion.. I just wondered if anyone could give me honest feedback about how they found/find them? eg did you expect to hate them but actually they're easy? Or vice versa? I'm keen to reduce environmental impact and cost of disposables but I'm worried about the bulkiness, fuss, whether grandparents / babysitters / childcare will change them easily, drying them without tumble dryer, etc... Also, with the cost, if I used disposables at night / on holiday / out and about etc surely we soon lose the cost benefit of part time reusables..? In every other way with the baby I'm definitely keen to do whatever makes our life easier and stressfree (and so more enjoyable with the baby) so not sure if I'm crazy to consider this. Opinions welcome!

fwiw I've had two long term rents in the area, one a shared house by Peckham Rye (6 years) and one a flat in nunhead (3) and while both were through local agencies, all our contact was directly through the landlords. there's a difference between a "managed" property ie the agency is who you deal with if anything breaks, and a property that the agency lets on behalf of the landlord. In both properties we were lucky enough to have great landlords who we could talk to directly about problems - and also rent increases - making it easier for everyone. Minor repairs we'd often just sort and they'd reimburse us - there was give and take on both sides. Beyond that it's just luck though; we eventually had to move out of property one because the landlord sold it, and our friends moved into another home where the owners had emigrated but then changed their minds and were back four months later.

child-friendly places near Barbican?

weekdays, get a train from Peckham Rye to Farringdon Or any days, get the 63 to Farringdon x -
Can you not make the childcare costs part of the monthly joint outgoings? So that instead of coming out of your account - meaning you then need to dip into joint account - it happens the other way around? Just as much a joint outgoing as mortgage etc I would have thought x

Where can I buy a new wheelie bin?
monniemae replied to spanners45's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Are you under Southwark Council? they've always replaced ours for free, and recycling boxes (which were always disappearing). You could even do it online (though I had to phone to ensure it went through). Unless they've changed it v recently it might worth you calling back and hoping to get someone else?
