  1. Is this the "Famous people in ED thread"? Did someone spot Henry down Northcross Market at the weekend? where has he been all season? citizen

Hi Trendy W.I's For your first meeting, Jerusalem by William Blake And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England's mountains green And was the holy lamb of God On England's pleasant pastures seen And did the countenance divine Shine forth upon our clouded hills And was Jerusalem builded there Among those dark Satanic mills Bring me my bow of burning gold Bring me my arrows of desire Bring me my spears o'clouds unfold Bring me my chariot of fire I will not cease from mental fight Nor shall my (my) sword sleep in hand 'Til we have built Jerusalem In England's green and pleasant land 'Til we have built Jerusalem In England's green and pleasant land But if that's a bit passe, how bout Billy Bragg's The busy girl buys beauty The busy girl buys beauty The pretty girl buys style And the simple girl buys What shes told to buy And sees her world Through the brightly lit eyes Of the glossy romance of fashion Where she can learn... 3. Q: how do you get free food in The Green? A: Order some! Popped in earlier today because of chance meeting with friends at the Goose Green swings. Despite my own misgivings about the place and the comments here in this thread and because the place was so convenient and our friends had not been there before (and also I am a positive guy in whom hope springs eternal) thought we'd give it a go. What can be so difficult about an order of two cooked breakfasts two continental ones and incidental drinks. Well about 45 mins after ordering we'd had coffees and the continentals but they just simply brought out the wrong hot food - twice. The service was shoddy, to say the least. We left and they didn't charge us. The layout needs a rethink, the place doesn't know if it's a Bar, Restaurant or Cafe. It always looks like it is just opening for the day or just about to close. Some pencils and pads for the waiting staff would actually be good thing. Having said all this - the tables outside were busy and people were happily chatting away and eating so perhaps it was just us. Is a children thing - we had a 2yr old and a 4yr old with us..... citizen
  4. when i passed by earlier today i noticed the skip and the workmen - eating sndwiches and pies out of a sainsbury's placcy bag - something obviously going down but more likely a refurb than anything else. have to disagree with you, spadetownboy, simply for nostaglic reasons, the Clock holds a place in my affections. Is it the most unsung Pub on the Forum? citizen
  5. charlotte Try the Therapy Rooms on Lordship Lane (opposite Somerfield) as they do that kind of thing. Their number is 020 8299 6040. cheers, citizen.
  6. Can anyone throw any light on the building work going on near the car park in Peckham Rye Park? A friend reckons they are building a cafe. If so, 'bout time - it's just what the place needs to finish off the recents improvements. citizen.
  7. Seems to me there is a bit of a division between all the "Arts and Crafts" enthusiasts who like Victorian splendor ie, Dulwich Hospital, Dulwich Baths and the Library and the uber cool set who like minimalist modernism. Are there any other interesting buildings we should know about? I always think the problem with the Library is the extention (on the right as you face the front door) because it simply isn't as elegant as the original building yet seems like a half-arsed attempt to fit in with it. And i don't know if anyone else agrees but as much as i like the church at the top of Barry Road it does rather look like the owners had it clad in stone sometime back in the 70's! citizen
  8. I've been in one of the flats in Dawsons Heights and from inside you get the most amazing views both ways over central London from the living room and over towards Crystal Palace and beyond from the back bedroom. (I also got a close up view of the most encrusted pile of pigeon poo you could ever see, out on the balcony). I thought the best view from street level is from the top of Canonbie Road - better than the Horniman don't you think, because you can see both ways' Citizen
  9. Dear Newsummer, A guy who used to be my neighbour (since, alas, moved out of London - work related) spent a couple of years strolling around ED eyeing all the talent and thinking it was some kind of gay mecca. His astounding positivity was charming to behold and pretty infectious though i had to caution him on occasion that the place was not exactly San Francisco and he ought not walk into the Plough holding hands with his boyfriend. However, on the whole - as you can tell from this thread - the place is pretty tolerant. Citizen
  10. Having cake AND eating it. Lets face it, if you live near to a High street with all the nice shops but also with the Post Office, Dry Cleaners and hardware stores you might expect the parking to be a bit tight at times. You get the advantage of convenience but then you can walk to the shops whereas other people might have to drive ie elderly, infirm, mums with kids etc. And no one's mentioned all the flats above the shops on Lordship. The people who live in them cannot park outside their gaffs so are likely to park in the surrounding streets. Please lets not have a CPZ in ED. Part of the charm of this place is that we don't have one. (though feel very sorry for residents of St. Francis Road if any so-and-so parks there for the station) Citizen
  11. Dear ktm, As another regular cyclist I would love to have a decent bike shop for sales, repairs and spares in ED. The whole point is that if there is something amiss with the trusty machine I want to walk it down for the repair and not have to squeeze it into the back of the hatchback and drive anywhere. I think said shop should play Radio 2 form the back room and have a nasty automatic coffee vending machine for punters Citizen
  12. Dear Kingtubby You Cycle or run to Canary Wharf every day....and you're still kingtubby! I'd lay off the pies, mate. Citizen
  13. Sean - two hours per day of reading/music/exercise sounds a great - not so much a commute as beach time. For me the commute is slightly different - half an hour cycle to Bromley - keeps me fit(ish) but reading is a bit tricky on the bike. Definately not the worst commute from ED then, but I know a woman who got the 176 all the way from Dulwich Court to Oxford street every day. Dulwich court is as far up Lordship Lane as you can get before you hit the Horniman. Now that is one long bus ride. Citizen
  14. Ten more laccy bands for the giant bouncy ball from one little trip to Blue Mountian this morning. The lil' boy is addicted. Thanks for the warning Jim-the-Chin. I'l check his pockets before I put the machine on - that's if I ever got round to doing the washing! Citizen
  15. Not sure of the Underhill/Overhill flats yet but the building is a vast improvement on the derelict house. Of course Eclair's place on the top of Denmark is the yardstick for all others to measure up against but I don't thing it counts as ED in anyone's book. Walking round this morning i caught sight of another terrific house, it slipped my mind before - the snazzy white "stealth" house behind the Jeannie Avent gallery on Lacon Road. All the Blue Montaineers must of seen it now the hoadings are down. Citizen
  16. Dear all Thanks for all the examples - i was forgetting about the converted skool in Northcross - now that is rather des. Two more i like are the property at the bottom of landells road near the corner with underhill road (near CPT). Used to be the officers of an estate agent i think but is a smart living space - and the similar one at the end of either Bawdale, Hansler or Shawbury (I forget which) close to Lordship Lane. Look out for them on your travels. Citizen
  17. Earlier in this theme, Doodles wrote, "Wondering if anyone knows the story behind the odd looking house in Dunstans Road with the clock set into the wall." I used to live next door to said house and if you think the clock and the petrol pump in the front garden are unusual - in the back garden is a beautiful 35ft tall brick-built Clock tower! It chimed on the hour. A quirky yet wonderful Folly of East Dulwich. Citizen
  18. Hats off to Huguenot and Nero for the street cleaning good deeds. I do it too at Goose Green play area - and my little boy picks up as many of the post-man's red rubber bands as he can! Citizen
  19. Thanks peeps, but i'm not looking for somewhere to live - i'm simply saying i like the building architecturally - and want to know if others had favourite ED buidings. Citizen
  20. Dear Chartwell, Er well, like NO - the streets in up around the Library/Plough are always filthy (too many take-away places combined with the sleaziest pub in ED). I am sure that some of the streets in ED are well cleaned but i guess it all depends where you live. I cycle through some residential parts of Forest Hill en route to work and am amazed how many times i see the street cleaners there - but then Lewisham claim they have the "cleanest streets in London". Citizen
  21. Hi all, I love the building on the corner of Melford Road/Lordship Lane just by Barcelona Tapas Bar - the wood-clad residential block. Is this the BEST BUILDING in East Dulwich or what? Citizen.
  22. We all seem to be clued up on Karavan and the antiques place on LL, but does anyone know what's happening to Jerk Rock?
  23. Michelle - you can visit Goodrich any day - they have an "open door" policy. We got an informative tour round by one of the secretaries. Just ring them first. Heber is more limited - I think they only allow visits Thursday mornings.
  24. The street lights at the top end of Landcroft Road were improved at the end of last year and it makes a huge difference. Hope the rolling programme gets to a street near you soon.
  25. Finches in Forest Hill have a room at the back for bike repairs - it's behind the station on Perry Vale. 25 - 29 Perry Vale, Forest Hill, Tel:020 8699 6768
