Big tobacco is keen for legalisation as revenue in the West is dropping precipitously and they see legalised weed as a good way to make money. I don?t think it?ll happen any time soon, by any stretch, but if Canada makes a success of it (which is far from a given in my view) then I think many nations will see an increase in lobbying for legalisation.

Speaking for myself, my biggest problem with her is that she has loudly and vitriolicly decried any Remain supporting Labour MP representing a Leave constituency that even thought about opposing Brexit, while she herself represents an area that voted Remain but she feels free to ignore her own constituents. She is a hypocrite of the highest order. She has no desire to win consensus, she is an example of those left-wingers who think that because they are left-wing they couldn?t possibly be autocratic or dictatorial. She routinely ignores those who voted for her and is only interested in pursuing a hard Brexit. At least Frank Field has some honour, Hoey cares only for herself. If she had any honour she would resign the Labour whip, force and by-election and stand as an independent and see if they really want her, but she likes the power too much (though nothing new there with politicians). She is also not particularly gay-friendly, which is abhorrent in this day and age. She only voted in favour of same sex marriage because it would?ve been political suicode not to. Ask Stonewall what they think of her if you don?t believe me...just one of several outdated attitudes she holds. There are many honourable Labour MP?s who support Brexit that are trying to build consensus and work towards a solution for the whole nation. She is not one of them.

I really try hard not to actively hate people, as it?s such a waste of energy, but Kate Hoey is such an unpleasant individual, actively abusing her position, that she really makes me fume.

If, perhaps, those governments (both Tory and Labour) hadn?t abolished the high-quality Coty and Guilds apprenticeship schemes and replaces them with flimsy local college courses with utterly nothing, then tradespeople from former communist countries (where they taught them how to actually build a wall and repair a car) would not have been able to compete here. They did so because their workmanship was superior. It was naff all to do with wages, it was that British tradespeople had gotten such a terrible reputation over the 80?s and 90?s that others had no trouble coming in and taking the work. Fact. That?s just one of the ways that we?ve blamed the EU for a problem entirely of our own making. There are others. You?ve still never answered my question about whether you?re happy to pay more for goods and services if/when businesses raise prices to accommodate the wages you believe British people are worth (an argument so completely divorced from financial reality it?s astoundong but I?ll continue to indulge you)? Because they surely will. ETA - ?Stats don?t lie?, hahahahahaaaa! Statistics don?t lie? Hilarious...

Good luck Foxy. I may not agree with a lot of what you say, but I?d rather you were around to say it. This is all mostly inane waffle anyway...mostly, there?s some important stuff here. Anyway, best of luck, your health is worth more than anything. Glad to hear you don?t have to drop Indian food as part of it! Not sure I?d want anyone to have to live with that...

I?m not sure it makes a difference these days. The lure of market value rents is strong, and Southwarks housing dept filled with some of the nastiest specimens you could want to avoid, so no, I?m not sure it will make a difference though I hope I?m wrong.

It?s worth finding out, if you can, if the developer has a clause which allows them to sell/rent at ?market value? if the project goes on too long. The development behind the flats on Wood Vale got shafted exactly like this; the builders had the right to jack the selling price up if construction went on too long in order to ?recoup their costs? (I kid you not). Can you guess what happened...? Too often developers promise social housing and then find a way to weasel out of it.

While I see why people might think otherwise, please believe me when I say it?s like expecting a young person on a tiny salary to save up for a house deposit. A small place like BB that lacks heavy backers needs to raise funds in other ways. Restaurants are not a licence to print money, despite what some people believe. -

I only count eight, but your point stands.

I always enjoy the way people who loudly proclaim the existence of Sharia law or ?Mosque Patrols? are completely unable to provide any evidence to back it up. They remind me strongly of the bigots I heard in the 80?s. Some people always want someone to blame. Haters gonna hate...

If you?re going to be annoyed at people who disagree with you at least be original about it...yawn... By the way, huge tranches of the American right-wing (hardly bastions of liberalism - awhaywver you think that is - or feminism) really hate Trump. But then that doesn?t chime with your world-view so you just dismiss anything you don?t like as lies.

As I said, naive. Just because it wasn?t the tipping point, doesn?t mean it didn?t happen. Sure you don?t need me to find you a list of occasions when governments have clandestinely interfered with another nations internal affairs for their own purposes.

Russia has far more to gain by damaging the EU, and it?s a much easier target, than to covertly push for something everyone knows is not going to happen anyway. You can calm down Keano, Putin?s not coming for you. ETA - It?s also really naive to think that Russia didn?t agitate for a Leave vote in some way or other, but it?s also to be expected. Putin isn?t going to sit back and hope for the best if he can possibly influence the results. I?m not saying it was a game-changer, but every major nation does it. We?ve been interfering in foreign elections for decades if not centuries; why on earth does anyone think Russia wouldn?t have at least had a go?

keano77 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Think about it JohnL. No, the Russians want a weakened EU, they have no interest in overturning Brexit. ETA - and please stop associating all remain voters with your theory they someone is trying to take away your victory. That kind of thinking belongs on the comment pages of the Express and the Mail.

The Begging Bowl?s Kickstarter Campaign

I see your points, however firstly I?d say Begging Bowl would probably already be charging more if they thought they could, and also doing it that way you still have to give 20% of any increase to the government! I?m not sure they?re being dishonest by using Kickstarter, but I respect that others feel differently. I agree that Gary is something of a...shall we say...Marmite individual? He certainly has his detractors, and hasn?t always handled things as well as he could! -
The Begging Bowl?s Kickstarter Campaign

In fairness - and despite my well documented disdain for this particular establishment - I can understand it. The whole hospitality/catering/pub/restaurant industry is in trouble. When they hit small businesses like this with massive business rate increases while taking 20% VAT from all sales (5% on food and drink sales on the continent, by way of contrast) it?s pretty easy to understand how they might have a skinny profit margin. They aren?t the first to go to Kickstarter to get funding - Gary Usher is an excellent example of how it can work - and it?s probably better than being in hock to a rapacious bank which will put you into ?special measures? just to asset-strip your business (see RBS and their ?Global Restructuring Group? for examples of how perfectly sound small businesses were nailed to the wall just to pad out a bankers bonus. If I was looking to renovate on that scale I?d probably do the same. -

fishbiscuits Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Wonderful food... always enjoy eating there, and > it would be great to be able to get takeaway. > > Let's keep the staff dispute a separate subject. Yeah but it?s not really is it? Because people tend to get up on their moral high horse about bad employers until it threatens a place they like. I?ve known several FOH staff members that have been through there and as a result of what I?ve been told I?ll never give them any money. -
Those are some really good points Jimbo. The speed with which social media took the strikers side appalled me as there?s no way a lot of those people could know all the facts.
-
I get what you?re saying Jimbo, in as far as the Ivy Jouse is a private business and it?s true the negotiations are between themselves and the workers. However, by conducting the strike publically (picket line, use of the media/social media) the workers have very much moved it into the public domain, as I?m sure was their intention (and they have every right to do so), so here we are discussing it which I have to say I think is a good thing. There are plainly some conflicting claims at play here and thus far I?m actually not convinced by the workers, but hopefully the truth will out. In the meantime if this can be a catalyst for wider discussion and awareness regarding working conditions in an industry which still needs to do more to bring itself into the 21st century (and believe me it?s a big discussion) then that?s a good thing.

I?m also pretty left-wing (in an old style Labour sense, NOT modern Momentum style), and I?ve long believed the Morning Star to be a waste of paper. Just because it?s left-wing doesn?t automatically make it right, and it?s selective reporting of the facts in this case demonstrate why.

Ah, the Morning Star...one of the most biased and unreliable rags out there.
