Well, although I think everyone can agree she's a tosser, her background is relevant in deciding if she's a class-traitor tosser or a snobby tosser.

Well you see, I'm none too clever on the old maths, but by my understanding if six people vote in favour of something and four against, that is 60% in favour, no? If others chose not to vote then they clearly don't care.

Assuming the council gave every household proper notification of the consultation and counted the results properly - and you don't seem to be saying they didn't - then it's perfectly democratic. A third of the electorate didn't turn out for last year's election - I wish we could cancel the result but that's how it works. Democracy assumes that if people don't participate they don't care, and surely that's true. The council can't force people to return their forms.

storing bicycles in front yard
rendelharris replied to msmoppet's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
"You will not need planning permission if a new or replacement driveway of any size uses permeable (or porous) surfacing which allows water to drain through, such as gravel, permeable concrete block paving or porous asphalt, or if the rainwater is directed to a lawn or border to drain naturally. If the surface to be covered is more than five square metres planning permission will be needed for laying traditional, impermeable driveways that do not provide for the water to run to a permeable area." www.planningportal.co.uk I retract saying "concrete over" - asphalt, pave or gravel over. The general point about uglification of the streetscape stands! -

Which is nuts. You can have > 3 eyesores in the form of council wheeliebins but > not a small shed. The regulations governing this are utterly absurd: they apparently exist to avoid cycle storage "spoiling the streetscape." Personally I'd have thought great lines of SUVs spoil the streetscape rather more than small discreet sheds behind hedges. In fact, if you have a large enough garden, you don't need planning permission to tear the lot up, concrete over it and park a stretch Humvee in it, but put a 6x3 storage shed behind a hedge and you can be told to tear it down! However, the prevalence of front garden bike sheds in Southwark would seem to argue that the planning department take a lenient view - might be worth enquiring as to whether they ever bother to pursue anyone for not having permission for a shed? -

Sincere condolences to one of the good guys James: I'm sure your father was very proud of your unstinting efforts on behalf of local residents. RIP.

Been dropping in and out for two days on Copleston. Not ideal (i.e. slow) but you could try BT WIFI with FON - ?6.95 a day, if you register for it via your 'phone should be able to log in via wireless.

storing bicycles in front yard
rendelharris replied to msmoppet's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If your bikes are any good at all I'd seriously say keep 'em in the back garden, it's worth the extra hassle. I used to lock a lovely bike outside my digs in Cambridge with the best Citadel lock available at the time (this is many years ago) - came out one morning to find the locked parts (frame and wheels) intact but the Shimano 600 brakes, derailleurs, gear levers and my Cinelli handlebars removed! Being behind a big hedge will just mean they have cover to work on it when you're out - if you have an alternative, use it! Ride safe. -

Are Virgin Media the most incompetent company ever?
rendelharris replied to woodstock's topic in The Lounge
As a Virgin customer I'm not unhappy - in fact quite impressed - with their service, not happy about the big Dick lying about things though: https://www.thelondoneconomic.com/news/virgin-release-traingate-footage-proves-corbyn-told-truth-traingate/23/08/ -
Be careful! Phone snatching attempt - East Dulwich Road

JohnL Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I like my iPhone (personal one) and I will get > iPhone8 too > > Work provides iPhones as standard too. Fair enough, I like good technology too, and nothing wrong with having it, but I wouldn't, for example, carry my Macbook around uncovered in the street because it'd be asking for trouble. I know that it's giving in to the buggers to some extent, but really I think it would be best to postpone that oh-so-important call or webpage check until in a safer environment. -

Oh, going to be big hated for this but...nobody's to blame for having their telephone stolen, the moped gangs are scum. Filth. But do we need to carry around and use ?800 telephones? I have a 'phone which costs me a tenner a month, it does all the bells and whistles, good luck to any twat who nicks it...I wouldn't stroll around wearing a ?50K Rolex either... Not excusing the horrible criminals but what's the point in carrying mad expensive shit around when a cheap thing can do the same job? -
Long, long time ago (but I can still remember...) I caught a train from Valencia to Calais, changing at Hendaye and Paris, and it cost me less than it cost to get back to Cambridge from Dover via London. And you could get really good wine on the train for next to nothing...

Looked into this a couple of years back but couldn't afford it during school holiday peak fares season - yes you can see whales and dolphins if you're lucky, mates have done it and seen both. The ferry to Bilbao won't take bicycles or foot passengers, bizarrely! But what you can do is take a ferry to Santander (?140 return out of school holidays) and from there get a three hour train to Bilbao for ?8 or ninety minute bus for ?6.

At the bare minimum, smart water > should be offered to all moped/cycle/motorbike > owners and they should be encouraged to use it. Unfortunately loops and locks, while good outside shops etc, are no good for overnight storage unless the bike is really, really crap. Any halfway decent bike will attract the light-fingered buggers, a fairly basic groupset (the gears, brakes and drivetrain for the uninitiated) costs ?300+ and all the bits can be swiftly removed with a modicum of knowledge and a couple of very basic tools. Even if you slather the bike in chains it's not uncommon for the frame to be cut open so they can shove it on a van and take it away to dismantle and sell the parts at their leisure. Bike hangars, secure garden sheds or storing indoors are the only sure security for a bike in this day and age. I wish that weren't the case, but it is.

Cost to paint hall and staircase round here?

Strip and re-dec ?14k. As it happens yes, did my mother's for her. Took me about a week and quite a few bob to hire the right sort of ladders. I'm not trying to justify anything or comment on what decorators are worth - it's certainly a job I wouldn't want to do full time, murder on the back - just passing on what seems to be the going rate. I reckon it's actually the seven doors, anyway, that have really bumped the price up. -
