Dear book clubbers, Michel Faber has confirmed that he will come to our January meeting on the 20th to discuss his book and perhaps do a reading from it. So lets try and make it a bumper meeting, he is coming down just for us but might also do a talk in Rye books. All going well with no delays he'll be at the meeting at 8.00pm. Best wishes, Chick. -

Dear book group, I wish to suggest that for the November book we read Michel Faber's latest book The Book of Strange New Things which is in paper back now. If possible he will come down from Scotland for our January meeting which will be on Wednesday 20th. It's a big book so as usual I wont suggest a book for December as I think we will need 2 months to read this one. See below. http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/oct/26/book-of-strange-new-things-michel-faber-review I would also like to set Wednesday 9th December for our end of year meal. We had Thai last year and can I have your suggestions for this year, preferably in Lordship Lane. Please let me know your thoughts. All the best, Chick From Michel: > Is there any possibility that you will be in London mid or late January? Nothing is planned for January and I am trying to keep my head down & work on the Eva stories after my travel excesses earlier this year. But if your book group are definitely going to be doing the book, I would try to come down for that regardless. At the very least, if I found that it was just impossible to make it down, I would render myself available for that evening to any emails that anyone in the group wanted to fire off to me on the spot, and I would answer them within minutes. But if possible I would try to actually be there. Please let me know the exact date as soon as you know it yourself. -

Dear book group, Some time next year I am going to propose we read a book called The Magic Furnace by Marcus Chown. It?s a story of how scientists? discovered the origin of our atoms. A brief description: Every atom in our bodies has an extraordinary history. Our blood, our food, our books, our clothes ? everything contains atoms forged in blistering furnaces deep inside stars, which were blown into space by those stars? cataclysmic explosions and deaths. From red giants ? stars so enormous they could engulf a million suns ? to supernova explosions ? the most violent events in the universe ? the birth of every atom was marked by cosmic events on an enormous scale, against a backdrop of unimaginable heat and cold, brightness and darkness, space and time. But how did we discover the astonishing truth about our cosmic origins? The Magic Furnace is Marcus Chown?s extraordinary account of how scientists unravelled the mystery of atoms, and helped to explain the dawn of life. It is one of the greatest detective stories in the history of science. In fact, it is two puzzles intertwined, for the stars contain the key to unlocking the secret of atoms, and the atoms the solution to the secret of stars. Having convinced our self?s that we are made the same stuff as stars and rocks I propose inviting a local philosopher to lead a discussion on the book and on consciousness and why we have it, where it comes from and why rocks don?t. This wont suit everyone so we will choose another book more aligned to our usual books that can be read in parallel. Also some time maybe before Christmas I am going to propose a trip to the Science museum to go to this exhibition: http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/visitmuseum/Plan_your_visit/exhibitions/cosmonauts.aspx So please let me know your thoughts on the above. See you on the 12th. -

Dear Book clubbers, I have tentatively booked us as a group for Chislehurst Caves on the 22nd. There is a minimum charge of ?90.00. So if we are ten that?s ?9.00 each. The tour is 45 minutes. I have some space in my car. Alternatively we could just turn up and take pot luck, no minimum charge, just ?6.00 each. In any case can we meet at 12.45. Please let me know if you are coming and what your preference is. To the three new people coming to the book group on 19th this invite is also open to you.
