Would that be iris, the clandestine gay organisation?
  2. Dear Book group, Thanks to every one who came to our last meeting which was lively & interesting. I am afraid Kracken didn't go down well, Sarah being the only one who finished. I gave up after 130 pages, 30 short of my target of reading at least one third before giving up if I hate it. This happened with Wolf Hall and A.S. Byatt The Childrens Book. Also a big welcome to Hannah. Our next meeting is on the 15th July in The Clockhouse, not sure if we are having the Blake room or the snug but I will let you know. Our next book is Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. This looks really good. I forgot to ask if anyone wants to order through Rye books, tel 0203 581 1850 if you wish you can order for your self. http://www.theguardian.com/books/2013/aug/31/burial-rites-hannah-kent-review I have been to Iceland and am looking forward to this book. Silka Is your party happening on 4th July? If yes and you want me to pass on details I can do individual emails. I'll be writing to the BBC about going on book club some time in the autumn. All the best & I hope to see you on the 15th July. Chick
  3. Just a reminder that we are meeting next Wednesday 17th at the Clockhhouse. All welcome.
  4. Dear book clubbers, The next book group meeting is due to be on the 17th June. Unfortunately the Blake room is booked. We can either go a head and have our meeting in the snug or we can have the Blake room on the 6th June, Tuesday. I can do either and don't mind but please let me know your preference ASAP.
  5. Dear Book group, Our next meeting will be on 17th June 2015. I will confirm regards the Blake Room. I went in to Rye books last Saturday and was told off because two copies of Any Human Heart had been ordered and not collected. This was the second time this has happened. This was very embarrassing. Alistair has very tight margins and we cant be costing him monies. So if you order books please make sure you collect them. He gives us a very good service and it's simply not fair to treat him like this. One possible solution maybe to have him deliver and we can discuss at the next meeting. Thanks, Chick.
  6. Of course. PM me an email address and I'll put you on the list.
  7. Greetings book clubbers, Thanks to every one who came to our last meeting. Our next meeting will be on either 10th or 17th June, I will confirm on Monday. Thanks to Harriet for arranging the spirit tour which surpassed all expectations. Our next book is based on a giant squid in the Darwin centre and one of the curators is the main character. A link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kraken_%28novel%29 Hoots & hugs, Chick PS happy birthday to Helen in Hong Kong.
  8. All places on the spirit trip on 9th May are taken. To confirm: Annie, Harriet, Charlie, Alice, Janet Noble, Emma, Sarah lyon & moi are booked on. Please confirm that you can still attend. Further details to follow. Cheers, Chick
  9. Greetings bookclubbers, Thanks to every one who came to a very good meeting and a big welcome to Silka & Annie. Our next meeting is 13th May in the Blake room at the Clockhouse. Our next book is Any Human Heart by William Boyd. A brief synopsis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Any_Human_Heart Copies are in Rye books for Sarah, Sarah, Chrissie, Annie and Harriet. Paper back at ?8.99. Harriet has very kindly agreed to take some of us on the spirit tour: http://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit-us/whats-on/daytime-events/talks-and-tours/spirit-collection-tours/ At the moment there are 5 places left and it is on first come basis so if you want to go please email me asap. More details to come. All the best & I look forward to seeing you on the 13th. Hoots & hugs, Chick.
  10. Sure thing Annie. Will send a pm with my number in case you cant find us.
  11. Just a reminder that our next meeting is 15th April in the snug area at the Clockhouse from 8.00pm.
  12. Dear Book worms! No takers for the flying. I am planning on going along to this tour: http://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit-us/whats-on/daytime-events/talks-and-tours/spirit-collection-tours/ Harriet is prepared to go in early one Saturday so we can get on the extended tour. Thanks. So please let me know if you are interested and we can finalise dates at our next meeting. Chick
  13. Greetings once again, Thanks to everyone who came along last week. Our next book is ?The Secret Life of Bees? by Sue Monk Kidd. A synopsis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Secret_Life_of_Bees I have also received this from the BBC: http://bbcsignups.external.bbc.co.uk/inxmail4/html_mail.jsp?params=2855292+charles.mckain%40arqiva.com+0+00mf57q000cn400000000cmj2k2dodyf Not sure it?s my cup of tea but I am sure it will be interesting. If you would like to go please email me asap. And a big welcome to Harriet & Charlie. Our next meeting is Wednesday 15th April. See you then. Cheers Chick
  14. Healey is spot on. The largest source of electromagnetic radiation is the phone next to your child?s head. The phone senses how close to the mast it is and reduces the out power accordingly.
  15. I am also organising a trip to Stapleford air strip in May to let some people do 20 minutes of aerobatics. The cost is ?109.00. It sounds a lot but is worth every penny for an experience you will never forget. You will get to do loops cork screw turns and vertical flip. http://www.flysfc.com/ The aircraft is a FireFly. It?s made of carbon fibre and is half the weight of an estate car and twice the power making it very fast. So if you are interested let me know and I will make the booking. Cheers, Chick
  16. For anyone who missed the broadcast you can listen here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b053zwq8#auto
  17. Dear book group, Just to remind you that the Bookclub recording you attended with Wilbur Smith is being broadcast this Sunday 1 March at 4pm, repeated next Thursday 5 March at 3.30pm. It will also be available on the listen again via Radio 4?s home page and on our webpage ? and as a permanent audio download. As you know we recorded lots of material so I am sorry if your contribution didn?t make the final cut, but we do appreciate your coming and taking part. You may be interested to know that every Bookclub programme going back to 1998 is now available on listen again on our archive: www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/book-club/archives/ With best wishes BBC

  19. Dont beat your self up. Hate the sin etc.
  20. Greetings book people, R4 have done a dramatisation of Sunset Song but there are only two days left to listen. Its very good and the book is still worth reading. Good listening and please send me some feed back. Cheers Chick. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00j2j2g
  21. Greetings, Thanks to every one who came to our last meeting which was lively & varied. Our next meeting is 11th March in the Clockhouse at 8.00pm. Our next book is Sunset Song by Lewis Grassic Gibbon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunset_Song See you there.
  22. Just a reminder of our meeting next Wednesday 8.00pm in the Clockhouse upstairs in the Blake room.
  23. It?s a great place to live and is as safe as any part of London. Because of easy communication on a forum like this there is a heightened awareness of crime. And a lot of wingers on this forum. I have lived here for 22 years and had one break-in and two pathetic attempts. In a city of 8 million that?s not bad. Transport is pretty good too.
  24. Greetings book worms, Some one is trying to start a book exchange at the Gowlett so if you have any old books you would like to donate please bring to the next meeting and I will drop them off. Look forward to seeing you next week. Hoots & haggis.
  25. Our next meeting is Wednesday 11th February at the Clockhouse upstairs in the Blake room. The book is A Man without a Country by Kurt Vonnegut http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Man_Without_a_Country
