  1. Sorry to go a bit off piste with this - we're a couple of years off the school application process but have our eye on both Horniman and Fairlawn as prime candidates. Quick question, how do you work out how far away from the school you live? Is it as the crow flies? Is there a website that can help calculate? We live near the Horniman and our neighbours have children at Fairlawn but it's a fair walk (given that you have to navigate round the park).
  2. I have a memory that a local shops delivery service launched c 6 months ago - red and yellow branding, they leafletted Forest Hill station and basically allowed you to shop online and order fish from Moxons, bread from Franklins etc and have it all delivered together. Anyone know what it was called, and if it still exists? I can't find trace of them online...

    Thanks

    Al

  3. Has anyone been to the volleyball today at Horseguards - if so can you help with the following info - we're going tomorrow morning:

    - Do you need ID to show along with the tickets (trying to work out if we need to turn up together or can split the tickets and go separately?

    - How bad was the security queue

    Thanks,

    Al

  4. Hi everyone

I've ummmed and ahhhed about this for ages but the book I'm reading (Your baby to toddler month by month) suggests that you should tackle any sleep problems now before they get too set in their ways. Problem is I don't know whether we have a sleep problem or not....

My little boy is 10 months old and has always been a good sleeper. He sleeps through the night routinely and has two naps a day (short morning one and longer lunchtime one). Problem is that he only sleeps in his buggy at nap times. I've tried getting him to sleep in his cot (which he does happily at night-time) but he just sits up/plays with his toys/chats to himself - everything but sleep. He is definitely tired because when I resort to rocking him in the buggy he goes to sleep instantly. And he's not unhappy or crying in his cot, he just doesn't go to sleep...

The buggy thing doesn't bother me as he naps well and it means he can sleep when we're on the go or inside at home, so in that sense I'm not sure that it's actually a problem. But I'm worried that it might be for when I go back to work and he goes to nursery in a couple of months time... Or even that it could turn into a problem as he gets bigger and refuses the buggy!

So do I need to bite the bullet and get tough about cot-sleeping or not to worry about it and just be grateful that he sleeps at all?! Advice/Reassurance very much appreciated!

  5. Hi Jenny

Just wondered whether your napping situation had improved at all and was just a phase or whether you had to change your schedule and abandon the morning nap? My LO is just over 9 months and has suddenly gone from a very reliable, predictable napper to a total napping rebel - he's particularly uninterested in the morning nap and just doesn't seem to get tired (or maybe I'm not recognising the signs anymore...). He's just started crawling and so is very energetic and excitable at the moment. Feel like I'm spending so much time trying to settle him down for a nap, to no avail, and just making him upset :'(. So hoping it's just a phase, so wondered if you'd come through the other side yet?

  6. LO's first teeth have just come through a few weeks ago and have finally got round to getting some baby toothpaste and a toothbrush (one of those ones that goes on your finger). I was planning to incorporate the tooth-brushing with bathtime and have heard it can be a bit hard work. But our bedtime routine usually goes bath, milkfeed, bed, in that order. Should I be doing the teeth-brushing after the milk feed to stop his teeth being coated in milk all night? Assumed that would just lead to totally waking up a sleepy baby and wouldn't be ideal, but then don't want to damage his new teeth! Or is it mainly about teaching good habits at this stage? Also should we do morning teeth-brushing too?
  7. Just wondered whether anyone has been on a Mark Warner ski holiday recently and taken their baby and can offer tips on what to take/ what's not needed and what to expect from the childcare? We're off to Deux Alps in a few weeks time, taking our 9 month old with us and am starting to panic thinking about all the kit we'll need to take! I'm also a bit worried because it'll be the first time that we'll have left him in a creche-type environment on his own for that long...

But some of the things I wondered are:

Baby food - it says they provide baby food jars but should we take our own (Ella's, for example) that we know are good?

Buggy - is taking a buggy included in the baggage allowance or do you need to pay extra (am hoping not since it is a kiddy friendly holiday operator!)? And is it even worth taking one, given that it's likely to be snowy and icy (well, I'm hoping so anyway) - do buggys work in the ice?

Naps - baby likes to nap in his buggy and isn't good at napping in his cot during the day (I know, I need to work on this....). Any idea whether the creche/nanny staff will let him sleep in his buggy for naps or is that not the done thing? Do I need to work harder at the cot napping over the next few weeks to get him trained for the holiday?

Washing machines - do they have any?

Planning to phone and ask about all this anyway but just wondered if anyone had any advice from their own experiences - anything I haven't thought of?

Very excited about the holiday but a bit nervous about leaving the LO.... :-S
