  1. Dog fox, vixen does the screaming. Wonderful ED wildlife comes up to my 1st floor balcony to eat their takeaways then shit in as many places as possible and scent mark anything vertical, even the front door. Just spent an hour scrubbing as the smell has infiltrated the flat. Bearing in mind my brain is bigger than theirs, I should be able to solve this problem.
  2. Hi, I sent you a private message 3 days ago - I am still interested. Thanks
  3. Four Egyptian goslings gone already. These Geese need to graze and/or have grains etc to eat. No chance of grazing within the lake railings so no doubt the mouse size goslings are great dog sport when out on the greens. Consider taking wheat, oats lentils and fresh grass clippings to support them if that isn't in contradiction to the anti rat rules.
  4. Today in Peckham Park, Egyptian goose honking at the seagulls as she was guarding at least 6 fairly newly hatched goslings. Hope they have better luck this year. Woodpeckers drumming their territorial challenges. Loads of sticklebacks. Very fat tailless squirrel.
  5. It would work for sharpening gouge chisels on the rounded ridges. All the many blade sharpening grindstones I have seen retain a clear 90 degree edge, not the rounded one yours has. I would have thought that it had pulley grooves but the stone looks like it would abrade rope rather than the stone becoming polished by use.

    Bees

It won't be a Queen bee as they only leave the hive once to mate and possibly once to swarm. Wrong time of year for both. More probable it is an overwintered bumble bee queen, especially if it's furry. Rotten weather for an early foray but they will often venture out to look for a suitable nest site. Plenty of nectar out there for them. Great you are interested enough to care. If it is able to fly you could let it go and it will find some shelter if the weather is not good and then create a whole new colony this year.
  7. A friend alerted me to a crow in Peckham Park in distress and apparently unable to fly. Several concerned people were surrounding the bush it was hiding under to keep dogs away and be sure of where it was. I took it home, then to Medivets because it had a small injury, they confirmed its wing was not broken though the first 2 primary feathers had been pulled out so it is probably too sore and bruised to fly. When put in a crate it immediately ate the food I had given it despite me being only a foot away. Peckham crows are profoundly cynical about seemingly good intentioned people so this seemed odd. Today it was happy to sit on my arm and poke my jumper. SO, NOT a wild crow. This poses a problem for release as it may not be up to scratch with the strict peckham crow social code and therefore be attacked. Does anyone know where it has come from or who might have reared/cared for it?
  8. If you go futher up the road on your Google link view you can see the road clearly marked with the straight on and left arrows on the inside lane and the right turn arrows in the outer lane. If you were in the outer lane and turned left that would probably result in a penalty.
  9. Great to see the Egyptian Geese decided to stay in Peckham Park this year and hatch 4 goslings.
  10. Some time ago, I went to the accountants in North Cross Road for initial advice prior to employing them, They offered an initial 30 minute free consultaion. The advice given was wrong and despite me insisting it couldn't be correct they maintained it was. If I had followed their advice it would have cost me 10s of thousands. I confirmed with HMRC that I had the correct understanding of the situation- in which I had no liability at all for the suggested tax. They then charged me ?80 for the 'free' consultation. I did pay this at the time but demanded a refund after speaking to HMRC. I am still shocked that accountants, offering professional services, could be so inept. I had already gleaned much of what they needed to know from HMRC websites. I can't remember what their fee was going to be for completing the paperwork on their suggested route. Not insubstantial. I can only suppose the person I spoke to can no longer be employed by that company.
  11. I have always assumed that the shop baskets and trolleys were provided for the convenience of the customer with the added calculated bonus for the shop that with a lot of space to comfortably fill, it will probably also increase the shops sales. I have never considered them as a directive for my behaviour. I find the shop baskets particularly awkward to use and have always collected my less than weekly purchases in my own bag/hat/scarf/jumper folded into a pouch etc. It had never occured to me that anyone would have reason to be bothered by this and I would be very surprised to have been challenged for, in essence, being a good customer. I am aware we are all paying a levy added to the price of goods to cover shoplifting. People are either going to be honest or not. I would have thought it was fairly obvious which camp anyone was in and I assume the shops will have their own protocol of how they deal with this. Anyone trying to tell me how to perform to their satisfaction the process of shopping, would give me great concern for their wellbeing.
  12. Yes, of course. Great all those people who raised their concern for the terrapins. I don't know whether the owner gave them inadequate living conditions through ignorance or disinterest, but raising awareness to the issue hopefully will make a difference. I would prefer all the living world to be able to have a good quality of life- and death, wouldn't we all. For all those who enjoyed a sea supplied gourmet weekend, well, just saying, the interim wait from the ingredients point of view, looks a bit harsh.
  13. And while we're all forming an orderly queue to voice our outrage, spare a thought for the crabs and lobster weighted down to immobility by lack of sea bouyancy, slowly dying on the fish stalls and mongers. Perfectly acceptable in welfare terms?? Of course plopping terrapins in some boiling water would end their suffering. Ah, the dilemmas of life! Anyone for terrapin sushi?
  14. My sons cat, aged 8, on Oakhurst was missing for 2 years but then strolled in and has never strayed another inch in the following 10 years. Hope yours surprises you too.
  15. I think its not about a fire hazard from correctly installed lighting, its the fact that the fire break of a plasterboard ceiling has been breached by cutting the lighting holes. In the (hopefully) rare possibility that there was a major fire in the house it could travel through melted light fittings into the roof void putting the whole roof structure at risk of collapse. As we all know, if the freeholders don't maintain their fire safety criteria and the worst happens, there would be loudly shouted outrage. Crap result for you, but I really think the contractor should have been aware of this when cutting into someone elses (freeholders) property. Alas, who out there has ever found the council making a correct and decisive decision in a reaonable amount of time.
  16. I'm sure they have moved off to a suitable home by now, if not, I have an empty hive awaiting and can collect them....
  17. I am having a problem for the last week downloading anything from the EDF. Each page can take up to 20 minutes to load. This has never happened before and is not happening with any other sites. My fibre broadband is running at between 50 and 70mb. Is this just me or has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas before I give up???
  18. The queen would be best put where the temperature will be below 7c to stop her thinking that spring has come, so ending hibernation. She will only have a limited amount of reserves, so a 50% suger syrup solution would be useful if she is awake. She should be hibernating underground, protected from frost. A box in an outside shed would be great as long as there is an easy spring escape route. Honey bees will fly when the temperature is over 10c. My hives all have hibernating queen wasps, neatly folded up in their rooves. 2017 was not a good year for wasps so they made a good choice as they have underfloor central heating provided by the bees. I suspect your queen has buzzed her way to extinction, but great you have tried to help.
  19. I've often gathered swarms in April. Its been a mild winter and all they need is some great weather if they've got plans...... Chick, leave an unoccupied hive out (with frames and wax) and I'm sure it will fill up with someones bees soon. It will have been your old queen that has left- your hive will now have a new virgin queen. I expect the hives in Peckham Park are managed properly as the keeper has paid ?45 for each Queen, but if they are really set on their plans you might find they suddenly belong to you! Good luck.
  20. The Little Owls are doing their spring one note whoop at dusk in the tops of the trees. Easy to spot them before the leaves are out. Kingfisher in the Japanese garden a few weeks ago, what a treat, but can't think where that came from. I expect it will get fed up eating sticklebacks.
  21. There were roadworks on East Dulwich Road that only stared at midnight. They picked up and moved the cars that were parked there. Perhaps they were grinding off the old road markings down to the Tesco dangerous pedestrian crossing. Slightly more warning now about the layout, but can't see any other completed roadworks. Yes it was VERY loud
