The other issue is when it could be invoked - as Cameron has effectively resigned so also has the current government so we have to await a new PM being appointed by the Queen & a new government formed before a General Election could be called for by either route. What no one is saying out loud [except for Hunt rather opaquely] is that the referendum is only advisory and it is for parliament to vote on Brexit & not the PM to action it. The PM can only propose & offer it for a vote which could be voted down by the MPs. This could concievably happen, once they have time to reflect & realise the mess that awaits us all over the next X number of years [unknown]

Only by lobbying MPs - it is a function of Parliament Also the super majority has to be 2/3 of MPs, not just those present in the House for voting. This is in place to prevent a coup.

Three ways to cause a General Election Vote of no confidence in the government - simple majority over 50% wins Straight vote for General Election - super majority of 2/3 wins Revoke the Fixed Term Parliaments Act 2011 - might get stuck in Lords or the Courts with challenges. Otherwise have to wait for 2020

Johnson does what he has always done best ...disloyal to everyone

Just measure this idiot against all those kids who were wiped out during two world wars - they fought for democracy & this person trampled all over the freedoms that they sacrificed their lives for. He has no shame & deserves zero consideration ! -

No - that was Hunt, at one time slated to be Cameron's successor [both related to the Queen] but he is strangely quiet. Had a big bust up with May and had to apologize to Cameron. Likely to back Gove. Ooops.! I see he is backing May. Must have his eye on being the new Chancellor. Now Gove cannot make it. -

I have no > argument with that, but I struggle to see how he > thinks it will make him PM given the general > feeling in the nation. This is the central issue - it defines the fault line in the Labour Party & I [like you] disagree with JC but we have to understand his motivations. They [i think] appear to be looking at what they consider to be the big picture and a few elections don't matter much. They will stick to principle as opposed to Bliar's unprincipled pragmatism. This will consign the Labour Party to opposition for years. The PLP made the wrong move & definitely at the wrong time.It will be their fault that fractures the Labour Party. JC is merely defending what he holds dear. I don't condone it - like you I am but an observer. C'est la vie.
-
Angela Eagle & supporters realize that they would likely not win a direct challenge to JC so she is holding off in the faint hope JC will resign. I think this will just strengthen JC's resolve to stay. So they are dgagging out the uncertainty and giving JC more time to rally his supporters. He will win - the Labour Party will lose. The PLP have screwed up ! They forgot the cardinal rules of timing & consequences.

The various views on reaching out to various groups, Palastinians, Irish Republicans etc are a more complex set of views that I would never pronounce on. I have direct experience of the Irish situation over a long time [am of Irish origin] and know enough not to judge either one way or the other. What I can judge is performance of various politicians in regard to their record in regard to how they push various policies that affect everyday health, wealth & welfare of all the UK population. Gove is an unmitigated bigot and monetarist of the highest order that will devastate the lives of millions if he gets the job. He screwed up education, wants to privatize the NHS etc. The only upside is that he probably wouldn't survive an election in 2020. May is right wing but has shown some flashes of compassion & understanding for the dispossessed. Crabb has views that are too entrenched in his religious ideology & he only proclaims inclusion now in order to be more electable. Fox makes Ghengis Khan look decidedly benevolant so he will attract the few votes he always gets & then it out for him. Andrea Leadsom has some dodgy dealings with offshore companies & contributions so that will count against her. She is competent but has little experience but also has a head start as a Brexiteer.
-
Though very important for the next few years, there will be a UK beyond Brexit. Teresa May fills the bill for the current negotiation and also has the experience, skills & good temperament for the post Brexit development. Seems a sorry chance of a Labour government in 2020 so we need common sense & a cool head for the next 9 years or so.

Was forced to deny he is still homophobic but refused to distance himself from the gay cure group, Care, so not really an acceptable leader of any party.

Bad man. Making the party > electable. > > Corbyn certainly can't be accused of that. Bliar mainly made Tony Bliar electable & has since profited wildly along with the rest of his family & cronies. History [including next week's Chilcott report] will show him as a charlatan & agent for his paymasters.

Yep - now down to May, Gove, Crabb. Not a great choice but hopefully May will win. Professional, calm, experienced - best of a bad right wing lot.
-
Now Boris - just shut the #@!* up and rock on !

Gove has repeatedly said that he is not qualified, doesn't have the stamina etc... Now might be a May/Gove contest - I prefer May as best of a poor choice.
-
BJ has funked it - at last knows when he is beaten...Yeaaaa !
-
Gove must have had a surreptitious visit to Damascus last night, spurred on by his wife's exhortations to go for the big job. This is a good thing because hopefully his tilt at becoming PM will consign both himself & BJ to the margins of political obscurity for good.
