Saudi Arabia to behead and crucify paedophile...
Gimme replied to Alabama's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
What about people who abduct a young man, take him into the desert, torture him and beat him to death? Do you think they should be beheaded or crucified too? -
Saudi Arabia to behead and crucify paedophile...
Gimme replied to Alabama's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Criminologists seem to think that sentences are not much of a deterrent if there's not much chance of getting caught. If there's a high chance of getting caught then people start worrying about the punishment. Unfortunately certain crimes in Britain seem to have a low detection or conviction rate and therefore it doesn't matter what the sentence is. And there's some crimes which people commit because they aren't thinking of the sentence when committing them (e.g. a lot of murders are like this). So, sentences of crucifiction and beheading are probably only an effective deterrent if there's a high chance of getting caught. They are probably more of a statement of revenge against the transgressor than anything else. I would say that you would have to do something pretty bad for your crime to be more morally repulsive than the act of beheading or crucifying someone. -
Residents Parking - Where God Art Thou
Gimme replied to thelittlebigvoice's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The big problem with residents parking is they allow pay and display so everyone still parks there but pays to do it. And when you want workmen to come in, you need to pay their parking costs. We live just off Lordship Lane but don't like the idea of residents parking as we'd get no advantage from it and parking would still be as bad. The only place you'd want resident parking is if you lived near a busy tube or train station and had commuters driving in, parking in your street then taking public transport into London. I don't think that this is the main problem with parking in ED (certainly not where we are). The main problem around here seems to be shop workers and estate agents parking people parking cars and going to the shops. Maybe I'm wrong... Does anyone think that there's a lot of commuters parking in ED and getting the train? -
You rude little person.

Well done. You've passed the course that teaches you to believe anything that anyone tells you. Yes. Feasibility study. That's what people want. If it's feasible, people want it. Business school. That's what they teach you. If it's possible, you can persuade people they want it no matter how cr@p it is. Great. Why would anyone pay any attention to aspirational internet posts when you could just open something feasible that is cr@p but that a feasibility study has proved that people are stupid enough to use if given the opportunity to do so and to avoid the alternative that may involve thinking or making an effort. Looking forward to Subway or perhaps (if we're lucky) a feasible Poundland. thebestnameshavegone Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Gimme Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > and open > > something that people actually want! > > I think you're confused - anyone can open a shop, > usually after a feasibility study --- if a > fast-food store opens it's usually because > someone's deemed it feasible that it might do > well. > > I don't think 'it fits in with someone off the > internet's aspirational posts on a forum' is > considered that often.

Oh, apparently the butcher sources his venison from Oundle. The leg we ate was probably from one of those two...

They have fantastic closing down offers. I got 10% off two packs of Kettle Chips bringing the price down to ?3.50!!!! Then I found that Somerfield were selling 2 packs of Kettle Chips for ?2. No wonder they are closing down... Oh, that and the fact they sell cr*p wine at inflated prices. On another note, the woman who worked there was very nice. Hope she finds something soon. On yet another note, sincerely hope that it isn't a fast food joint or an estate agent or a bookmakers. Please someone refer to the "What does ED lack?" thread (ignoring the sarcastic comments about needing another estate agent...) and open something that people actually want!

There is a posh part of Glasgow but it's a well kept secret where those 3 houses are...

Doh! Keep saying Northcote, but meaning Northcross. I've only been here for 2.5 years...

Weird experience in The Mag yesterday. We got there and ordered but they couldn't do any of the veggy dishes due to not having spinach or butternut squash. In the end they combined all the bits of the veggy dishes they DID have into one plate to satisfy the veggies. That said, if the Mag doesn't win the next 'Best Burger in London' competition then something is wrong. And their mayo is fab. Among other things we did yesterday on the ED food scene: Bought a delicious leg of venison (Muntjak deer) from Sparkes for ?9 Got really nice cream cheese from the Cheese Block Spent loads in SMBS including spinach and a butternut (The Mag - take note!) and some of the best icecream around (Purbeck award winning clotted cream ice cream). Loved the fact you can buy Edamame there. Oggled the cakes at the cake stall on Northcote Road Took a good whiff of the brilliant coffee at the coffee stall on Northcote Rd Bought amazing smoked haddock for a very reasonable price at Moxons. Resisted the temptation of the parmentier and pear and chocolate tarts at Lucas's. Yep. Great food scene in ED!

Sue - why would being nosy about celebrities be a joke? The current culture of the UK is built on those very foundations... Is Goose Green ED's new kerb crawl hotspot? (Tooting Common)

I'd think your missus should be okay from now on. She won't be able to go anywhere without the bugaboo and most kerb crawlers should be wary about the damage one of those weapons can do... -

They are hopeless. I spent 6 months trying to get them to sort out fly-tipping in our street and they just had cosy chats with people (who then ignored them). I don't think they have many powers other than the power to try to persuade people to be good. The problem improved vastly when someone in the council with some bite got involved.

It sounds like it really wasn't your fault. If someone had fallen out of a window onto your car it wouldn't have been your fault either. It must be really distressing but keep reminding yourself that it wasn't your fault, it was something someone did to you not the other way round. Let the hospital deal with the man who was injured and focus on your own family. And stop blaming yourself or thinking you could have done something different to prevent this happening.

Boris agrees to meet SLL campaign deputation
Gimme replied to Laurie Eggleston's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I like it! The old 'ask the same question to different people then embarrass each of them with the fact that they are obviously lying' tactic. The best known device to avoid the 'fob-off'. SLL Campaign seems to be achieving really impressive momentum. I'm always a bit sceptical about how much home-spun single issue campaigns can achieve (look what 1 million people marching against the Iraq war managed) but it seems like you are doing really well. Hopefully the momentum will continue gathering pace and you achieve what you are aiming to achieve. One in the eye for the service-cutters! -

This thread is a load of rubbish. The South London Press article is about the notorious red light district next to Tooting Common. http://www.southlondonpress.co.uk/tn/News.cfm?id=42279&headline=Kerb-crawling%20sting%20near%20Tooting%20Common -

On a slight downer, my mother in Scotland saw the news article about ED parcels and decided not to risk sending pressies to us.... we've had to wait until later this month when she comes to visit! Boo hoo!

They said they were expanding back into the bit behind the counter and were going to expand their beer selection. Woo hoo! Apparently they've been quoted 3 weeks for the refurb.

The biggest problem with transport in our area isn't getting into London, it's getting ACROSS London. The network is designed too much like a set of spokes from a radial. This removal of the line to Victoria will make it more difficult to get to Clapham and Battersea as well as Victoria (unless you like sitting on the 37 in traffic for an hour). What we need is a train or tram that goes Lewisham, Forest Hill, Sydenham, ED, Brixton, Clapham, Battersea, Wandsworth, Barnes, Richmond, Twickenham or something like that and one that goes diagonally down from Lewisham, through Brockley, Nunhead, ED, Herne Hill, Tulse Hill, Streatham, Balham, Earlsfield, Wimbledon. What about extending the DLR? Save having to go into Waterloo or London Bridge only to go back out again.
