  1. Having said that eater81 does make the debate more interesting for the amused neutral bystander.... I liked Bellerophon's comment that eater81 was amusing until suddenly he was attacking what Bellerophon believed. Aren't we all like that. It's amusing until we care, then suddenly it's not amusing anymore. Interestingly though, this debate has pointed out another reason why state funding for faith schools should be withdrawn (apart from the fact that education is about the child learning and Sunday should be kept for indoctrinating impressionable youngsters with mumbo jumbo written by 'inspired' people back in the day before people knew anything about anything beyond their village). The state should not be funding schools that are go so completely against their stated aims of reduction in car usage and reduction in congestion and which encourages parents to drive their children sizable distances to go to a distant school when there is a perfectly good one in walking distance.
  2. Maybe the conviction rate for speeding on side streets in East Dulwich will be as amazingly high as the conviction rate for using a mobile phone while driving! And maybe it will have a similar deterrent effect! This sounds like a pointless gesture that makes you look like you are doing something without actually having any impact whatsoever (but also without spending much money). But hey, that's stock in trade for politicians...
  3. You may want to say what you are selling. At the moment I don't think that it's that clear whether you are opening a toy shop or a clothes shop or a specialist fantasy / sci-fi shop.
  4. KK - I think you are pretty out of order. He took the time to reply to your point so viciousness like you've displayed above is a bit pathetic particularly when you make the ludicrous point that he doesn't have a right to spend time with his kids. This thread has a serious point - it gives us access to Councillor Barber to air our queries and grievances (even if we aren't always delighted with the reply). As soon as you turn it into one of these joke threads where people spend 3 pages slagging each other off, we all lose. Please PM me if you like and we can have a private disagreement / slagging match about your behaviour but I don't think this thread has any need for bitter unpleasantness like you've shown in your last two posts.
  5. Another thread for your attention Councillor Barber: You may want to look at the thread on EDF Gossip and Info entitled Traffic Wardens. It seems that there is a widespread perception that Southwark traffic wardens are guilty of committing fairly serious traffic offences. I particularly liked / disliked the story about the guy driving while trying to write out a parking ticket.... That sounds a lot more dangerous than the activity he was trying to stop. Your traffic wardens are one of the most visible public faces of Southwark Council (apart from perhaps the totally ineffectual community wardens) so perhaps they should be educated on traffic law before they damage your reputation further. I've personally seen them ticketing cars for being parked in front of disabled ramps, while themselves being parked in front of a disabled ramp and have seen them ticketing people for parking on double yellow lines while they themselves are parked on the very same double yellow line.
  6. Councillor Barber, Thanks for replying. I've read your piece and am pleased to hear that this is being discussed. However, I spoke recently to Todd Strehlow who I think heads up the traffic planning at the council and he said that Matham Grove had not been selected and that Melbourne Grove, Derwent Grove and Elsie Road were the ones that would get traffic calming. He explained that there was no budget for doing more than just those streets. However, if the head of traffic planning is talking cobblers and you are still to make a decision, I'd be delighted if it was Matham Grove that is selected. In the meantime, Mick Lucas, who has responsibility for road signs, has apparently been asked to remove the ruddy great sign directing A-road traffic from ED Grove down Matham Grove. He appears to have ignored repeated requests by Mr Strehlow for over 14 months now. This is a blatant, blatant breach of the Road Safety Plan (this is not "council failing to identify rat-run", this is "council pro-actively trying to create a rat run"!). Perhaps you could give him a shove and get him to do the right thing? I eagerly look forward to further developments. Thanks again Gimme
  7. Apparently 55% of all traffic fine appeals are successful. Traffic rules are necessary to ensure that people don't park in dangerous or inappropriate places. However, nobody told traffic wardens this. Apparently they think that they are there to penalise anyone for any slight breach of rules. And whenever you see a Southwark traffic warden car, it's usually parked on a double yellow line. Bar-stewards.
  8. Can I take it that the lack of reply again (for the fourth time I think) is a sign that you're going to take a pass on the problem of a flagrant breach of the Southwark Road Safety Plan on Matham Grove again? Would you prefer I bothered someone else with that one and came up with a new issue for you?
  9. It's cooler to pretend you don't know who they are :-)
  10. Think you might be lucky in ED although the Vale is the one that occasionally obliges. If not, mates are going to Walkabout in Temple which is apparently showing it on a couple of their screens
  11. Councillor Barber, Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post. I've PM'd you if you still want to get involved in the local issue I'm still trying to resolve. Gimme
  12. There's obviously an election coming up... Mr Barber said he'd DEFINITELY help me with an issue I spoke to him about last year then ignored the emails I sent describing the problem and never got back to me despite several chasers. Luckily his colleague Richard Thomas seems to be a bit more dilligent and tried very hard to help after I spoke to him. The moral is.... you can ask but Mr Barber may not bother answering.... Anyone else had good / bad experiences of our local councillors?
  13. Which? website recommends Kiddy Infinity Pro, Maxi Cosi Priorifix and Britax Duo Plus (Isofix) in the 9 to 18kg group, and Britax Kidfix Isofix, Maxi Cosi Rodi XR and Britax Kid Plus in the 15 to 36kg group. There's more but I just listed the top three in both categories. Hope this helps.
  14. Cant believe that nobody has mentioned the Rosendale!!! Great food, good atmosphere, fantastic service. We don't bother with Palmerston or Franklins for a good meal locally, we go straight for the Rosendale these days. Other alternatives in Clapham and Balham (bit further afield I know but worth the trip) - Lamberts is a super place for lunch at the weekend, Chez Bruce is fantastic but pricey, Tsunami in Clapham North is amazing (although perhaps better for dinner). Have also heard good things about Upstairs in Brixton. Another fun and sexy place for lunch is the Prince Regent in Herne Hill. The sexy thing about it is getting a booth and they are always sexy as nobody looks to see the footsie going on ;-)
  15. Not a parent (yet - October...) but I've had a peanut allergy for 36 years (although it's not so severe that I need an epipen which makes things less stressful...). It is quite possible that your son isn't allergic to all nuts - I only get a reaction to peanuts and a little bit to hazelnuts. I also avoid walnuts and cashew nuts but not sure there is a rational reason (apart from they have the same texture as peanuts therefore scare me). All other nuts are fine. Also peanut allergy sufferers are often not allergic to peanut oil, just the protein. Anyway, what I'm getting at is that you need to find out exactly what he's allergic to and reduce your fears about everything else. It's taken years of accidently eating all the other types of nuts and not getting a reaction to rule them out but I'm sure modern technology can tell you that much more quickly these days. I've had a reaction to peanuts once in 5 years (i.e. I've only eaten a peanut once in that period) through knowing exactly what to look for. Beware of all cakes, desserts, biscuits and chocolate confectionary. Also be careful with all oriental food. But remember that you're unlikely to find peanuts in loads of things - generally most British and European food (other than dessert) doesn't have nuts in it and should be safe. I don't bother checking most starters and main courses in restaurants unless it's a Thai, Indonesian or Malay restaurant. The key is to be prepared if it does happen and to try to avoid it happening as much as possible without getting too worked up. As with everything, the stress of worrying about something often makes a reaction more likely or worse if it happens so the best thing to do is to avoid making your son constantly worried. Good luck. It might not be as bad as you fear and may not affect his life as much as you think.
  16. Cool. Personally, I'm not sure ED needs another Indian restaurant but Mrs Gimme is vegetarian so will be delighted.
  17. Good plug, well timed LegalBeagle. Will check out your website.
  18. New veggie Indian? Where is that? (or is it somewhere in the thread...)
  19. Au contraire... Just been in Alsace on holiday and having just checked my small collection of rieslings, they are all 13%. Although you are right, an Aussie red would probably be slightly stronger. Anyway, cheap wine will give you more of a hangover. I've got a friend who swears that chardonnay gives her a hangover every time but miraculously Chablis seems to be okay...
  20. B*llocks indeed. But nonetheless, Dulwich Tandoori is genuinely pretty good. We had mutton dansak and sag bhaji last night from there and it was a really tasty meal. I also like the guy who manages the place - Neo / Nero / Neural / Nuwral (not sure how you spell it but said in a South London accent he has the same name as Keanu Reeves in The Matrix). He does make an attempt to look after you - in contrast for example with his near neighbour Le Chardon. I thought that the marketing for Surma was better though. Sign in the window says "Award Free". Says it all.
  21. In parts of Scotland, "barry" means "very good". As in "that was totally barry, so it was" Quite ironic isn't it. louisiana Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Barry does seem to be a magnet for the badness in > ED. Bad Barry. Bad.
  22. This forum seems to have a fantastic track record of lost cats being found (even if some come back on their own after a big adventure!!!). If our cats go missing, I'll be right here.
  23. Surely this is on topic. Lorraine Chase was seen in ED supermarket. She is "famous" but will she be famous in 30 years (therefore dividing line between her being famous and being a celebrity).
  24. Do you think Lorraine Chase will be famous in 30 years Matthew123?
  25. Well should repetition be banned on EDF? Should it be banned on EDF? If we've already had a thread before, should it be disallowed? What about threads saying "Recommendation for a builder wanted"? Should that be banned because it has appeared before? Betcha fiver this get's lounged....
