Organising a big household /me full time in work
Fuschia replied to Fuschia's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Thanks for that. Currently I meal plan manually, or a monthly cycle (roughly) and then use Tescos with deliveries on Saturday and weds. It's a big delivery for 8 of us, so the main delivery comes on Saturday when I am home. A top up one comes weds. I think I might need to give the au pairs access to the tesco account to adjust and top up midweek. Perhaps I should shift to ocado... Or find another way to get organised re cards and things. Maybe do the year all I. Advance. Packed lunches get done in the morning here, night before would be better. And get bags ready the night before.. No q1 child is starting secondary in sept and he is so disorganised it's unreal. Amazon prime, tick Cleaner, we don't have... Probably we will need to. My admin is in a bit of a muddle, I need a bigger noticeboard and a safe place for school letters, and as I will be on the train now rather than driving, that's a good time for admin. Doubt I can do admin at work as the start of the day is always manic. Partner is hands on, and will be at home more, but he is impossible when it comes to doing small tasks... I asked him in February to organise some birthday presents/cards for the start of march... In the end I did one of them myself 6 weeks later, and the other one never got done. Thanks for the tips. I need to up the organisation at least 2 gears I think. Luckily au pairs and fab and very organised... And don't mind sorting out washing, putting away clothes. I just need to get a second car (!) to make all this work. -

Lewisham banding system (and Harris)

http://notsoordinarydiary.wordpress.com/2014/04/17/testing-times/ Worth reading 'And in that bookshop, at the back and in the corner, I gave myself a talking to. As a teacher and a mother. I reminded myself of the decision I made, back when I was stuck in the maternity unit, waiting to be told that I could take my baby home. Back when Sam was only a few days old I realised that I didn?t have a baby so that he could reflect well on me. I didn?t have children so that I could live vicariously through them, or bask in their reflected glory. It was, and is, my privilege, and my responsibility to bring them up, to give them the foundations so that they can go on and live an independent life. The rest is up to them. My worth as a parent is, perhaps, only going to be known when they are parents themselves. And I reminded myself that I am not a failure if my kids don?t live up to some arbitrary standard set up by someone else. I am not a failure, either mother or teacher, because the children don?t have the right number of chromosomes, or the ?right? letter or number following their names on a school tracking system. All I can do is my best, and sometimes, with no reference to me, other things happen.'

An impassioned plea, for education, against Gove
Fuschia replied to bluesuperted's topic in The Family Room Discussion
This is a blog worth reading - http://debrakidd.wordpress.com/2014/04/04/better-a-blob-than-a-knob/?utm_content=buffere9de5&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer ' I do believe that children are naturally (on the whole) curious, imaginative and creative. But I don?t think that the purpose of education is to simply express this. I want them to be able to read, be numerate, have knowledge and experience. It?s just that I want the latter to be achieved without crushing the former. Is that too Blobby for you Mr. Young?' -

Ooh Rene was my midwife, though she didn't do the snip in those days so I saw mr Patel. What I found a bit hard at kings was that mr Patel was very certain that the baby needs to feed immediately after the procedure. But I was on my own and I couldn't get him to latch, so I was really fearful it would just heal back up immediately Having it done with a midwife on hand to help with latching on would be a big help

Some stats behind the hype re academy chains like Harris
Fuschia replied to Fuschia's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My experience of ap for year 11 pupils is that they are transferred to the Ap prior to the January census and so their results count against the ap rather than against the school. My reading of the Harris Aspire ap is that they do indeed transfer pupils off of the original school roll. -
Dr Patel has a secretary who has all the info, I think

Pupils rarely get expelled thee days, but get shifted to some sort of alternative provision, or leave by 'mutual agreement' -

Not to mention a conflict of interest between the government and Tory party donors Public money hived off into huge salaries for the senior staff in the chain Funds paid over to profit making subsidiaries http://antiacademies.org.uk/2012/03/harris-federation-spotlight-on-sponsors/ -

Not at all If there were 200 approx pupils in a year group and 30 pupils weren't included in the gcse stats, it could have a huge effect So let's say 129 pupils of 170 got 5a*-c with en/ma -76% But add back in the missing pupils and say they didn't reach the benchmark 129/200 -that's only 64% It doesn't even really matter how the gap occurred (pupils hived off to alternative provision, told they needed to leave and find a new school, or just actual wastage but the school declined to take on any of the lae arrivals into ks4, often with little English, that most schools contend with When you bear in mind that Harris schools select their intake to match national split if different abilities (so their intake will be skewed upwards compared with other London schools) then they should be able to reach national averages without having to play games like that
