they are still doing it (parents leave child in car)
Annasfield replied to lilly123's topic in The Lounge
Not sure if any of you have seen this before, I'm sure that most of you have as it came around as an E-mail last year. I felt that it's quite poignant and highlights the differences between today's childhood and ours... Only a bit of fun I know, but good for the memories...... FOR THOSE BORN BEFORE 1986 According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 60's, 70's and early 80's probably shouldn't have survived, because our baby cots were covered with brightly coloured lead-based paint which was promptly chewed and licked. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or cabinets and it was fine to play with pans. When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip-flops, or wooden Scholls, or black plimsoles and fluorescent 'spokey dokey's' on our wheels. As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or airbags - riding in the passenger seat was a treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle and it tasted the same. We ate chips, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy juice with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing. We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and no-one actually died from this. We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then went top speed down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We would leave home in the morning and could play all day, as long as we were back before it got dark. No one was able to reach us and no one minded.. We did not have Play stations or X-Boxes, no video games at all. No 99 channels on TV, no videotape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no DVDs, no Internet chat rooms. We had friends - we went outside and found them. We played elastics and rounders, and sometimes that ball really hurt! We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones but there were no law-suits. We had full on fist fights but no prosecution followed from other parents. We played chap-the-door-run-away and were actually afraid of the owners catching us. We walked to friends' homes. We also, believe it or not, WALKED to school; we didn't rely on mummy or daddy to drive us to school, which was just round the corner. We made up games with sticks and tennis balls. We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood (ahhhh the memory!) The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of...They actually sided with the law. This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. And you're one of them. Congratulations! Pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow as real kids, before lawyers and government regulated our lives, for our own good. For those of you who aren't old enough thought you might like to read about us. --------------------------- This my friends, is surprisingly frightening......and it might put a smile on your face: The majority of students in universities today were born in 1986.........They are called youth. They have never heard of We are the World, We are the children, and Uptown Girl they know is by Westlife not Billy Joel. They have never heard of Rick Astley, Bananarama, Nena Cherry or Belinda Carlisle. For them, there has always been only one Germany and one Vietnam. AIDS has existed since they were born. CD's have existed since they were born. To them John Travolta has always been round in shape and they can't imagine how this fat guy could be a god of dance. They believe that Charlie's Angels and Mission Impossible are films from last year. They can never imagine life before computers. They'll never have pretended to be the A Team, Red Hand Gang or the Famous Five. They'll never have applied to be on Jim'll Fix It or Why Don't You. They can't believe a black and white television ever existed. And they will never understand how we could leave the house without a mobile phone. Now let's check if we're getting old... 1. You understand what was written above and you smile. 2. You need to sleep more, usually until the afternoon, after a night out. 3. Your friends are getting married/already married. 4. You are always surprised to see small children playing comfortably with computers. 5. When you see teenagers with mobile phones, you shake your head. 6. You remember watching Dirty Den in EastEnders the first time around. 7. You meet your friends from time to time, talking about the good old days, repeating again all the funny things you have experienced together. 8. Having read this mail, you are thinking of forwarding it to some other friends because you think they will like it too... Yes, you're getting old - but what the heck -we've had fun!! -
Why? Because he makes me a laugh and always tries to be diplomatic. I realise that this forum is for people to express their views and opinions, but I do think that some times it can get a bit personal. Keef will then suddenly appear with a light-hearted joke and a sensible resolution to any disputes. Brilliant! Oh, and he supports the mighty LFC >:D< Edited for Keef :)

Wally - what a great word!! I don't own a dog and to be honest I don't wish to as I don't have the time. However, my housemate does and I think it's great. I've always had cats and horses and since moving back to London I've not had either. It's really nice to get home from a cr@p day at work and be greeted by a dog that's extremely pleased to see you. I really missed having pets around and it's just nice to have their presence. Some people do keep dogs for company, however I doubt that this is because they are lonely. Owning dogs is a pleasure as they have character and it's a good excuse to get out the house and go for a walk. Maybe when Alan Dale refers to "well rounded" he means that these people don't get enough excercise, because they don't have dogs......;-)

Blimey - this is all rather heated. I have been following this thread all afternoon and I must say that I think that certain people?s attitudes to dogs are despicable! I often walk a friend's dogs and trust me, if they were simply to run past someone and then were kicked I would have no issued in reporting that person to the police. I agree that dogs should be kept under control, but keeping them on a lead in a park? Perhaps people who are that worried should stay at home, wrap themselves in cotton wool and never eat hot food ? just incase they scald themselves! If you?re ?attacked? by a dog or a person, you have every right to defend yourself and I see no problem in doing that. I think you should define attack Alan Dale ? does this include brushing past your legs? I find it quite rude that you?re saying dog owners are lonely and insane. Dogs are lovely animals and I wouldn?t chose to own one myself, as I don?t have the time. I would suggest that people who are labeling dog owners take a good look at themselves before casting aspersions!

My housemate and myself make and freshly prepare all our food and we never buy microwave meals. I used to be a chef, which helps with all this. The only thing in jars in our fridge is homemade jam (my grandma makes this and it's bloody lovely), homemade red onion marmalade and a pot of Thai Green curry paste - admittedly the latter is not home prepared. We often cook a meal, e.g. fish pie or spaghetti bolognaise, and make a load extra and then freeze it. You then have a convenient microwave dinner that is actually good for you. I like the bones idea - you can then make a lovely jus with the stock. Riverford deliver a nice box of organic veg every other week and we find that this makes us eat our 5 a day.

I agree with Keef, the problem here is that people believe the trash that is often reported in the papers. The report and enquiry that has been produced since the terrible disaster at Hilsborough proves that the fans were not to blame. The "Truth" is something that the JFT96 campaign are still fighting for today and is also the reason why sales of the "scum" newspaper are incredibly low in Liverpool!
-
I said that the majority are innocent but there are a few that let the side down. I'm sure that this action did prevent a potential disaster. Fans with fake tickets should never have been let in and the problem would not have escalated.
-
I agree with Jah Lush and I know that I am biased, but imagine paying potentially thousands to travel to Athens to watch your team play in the biggest game of the season. You've got a ticket and as far as you are aware it's genuine and there is no reason in the world why you shouldn't get in to that stadium. You get there and then you're turned away. Can you imagine how that would make you feel? I also agree that there is a small contingent of fans that do let the side down, however every club has this problem. Because Liverpool have been successful and have played massively publicised games, our fans are highlighted as troublemakers. How did fans without tickets get in to the stadium? Security should not have allowed it and as for people getting in with fake tickets, you can't blame the fans for that. It should be blamed on the greedy touts and the fact that tickets will always be available from unreliable sources.

Absolutely gutted.....:'(

Trains between London Bridge and ED stuffed.

Keef - if you get stuck in town, you're welcome to join us. We'll be in Williams on Artillery Lane :)) -
There is always one....

So the CPT is the place to watch football in East Dulwich. Already have plans for tonight - but will have to wander down next season for a game or two.
-
Hopefully it won't be as entertaining as "that" game in 2005. Don't think my nerves could take it!
-
Thanks Jah Lush - quite an exciting day, can't concentrate at all!
-
If you run past me I'll smile! We often run around the perimeter of the park, which takes longer and is far more interesting than the track. Quite slippy if it's rained a lot though, so be careful.:))
-
There was a fair bit there, such as grilled aubergines and courgettes, etc all in Tapas style. You could definitely visit as a vegetarian and not leave hungry.
-
I know :-$ - thanks Jeremy, I thought that I'd amended my mistake. Obviously enjoyed the wine a bit too much last night...
-
Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but last night myself and some friends went to Green & Blue for supper. It was my first visit there and I must say that I thought that it was a great place and service was good too. The fact that all the wine was shop not restaurant prices made it even more palatable! The three of us had two very (very) nice bottles of wine and food for a mere ?50. I was very impressed. Just thought it would be to put some positive feedback on here. >:D<

I was born in Hammersmith and have lived all over the country. My alleigance to Liverpool stems from my Mum and her family all coming from Crosby and obviously supporting the reds. Not sure if that's a good enough reason, but it's been the reason all my life...:))
-
I remember that 96 final like it was yesterday. Afterwards, we bought a Cantona figure (you know, one of those with the big heads) and melted it in a fire. Childish I know, but it made me feel better! Bloody Utd and their late spawny goals.... You're right though, Jah Lush, it's going to be a tricky game. But as Gerrard has said today - LFC are feared because they don't go out without a fight. Can't wait! Poor Lady G - we've somehow got away from the Arsenal supporters question. Sorry!
-
Thank you Huguenot - I go past there on the way home from work every night. Aren't I observant!
-
I missed the bit about the Vale - where is it? (Sorry new to ED) Perhaps we could meet elsewhere?
-
Sounds like a great idea - although I may elect to hide behind the sofa. So exciting.... I watched the 2005 final in the city with work. There's a couple of red supporters here and they think we need to return to the exact same place to bring us luck, so I may have to stay in town :(
-
Tequila!? - weren't you drunk enough after extra time and penalties?:)) We started straight after work and it was very messy.
-
Will have to try the CPT one evening - have wandered past a few times now and pondered going in. Not sure if any of you fellow reds saw this on the LFC website, but I thought it was brilliant. You can't beat Scouse humour. http://www.liverpoolfc.servecast.com/downloads/liverpoolfc/match_pix/first/2006_07/602/medium/PROP070501-04-Liverpool_Chelsea.jpg Do you reckon we'll need to hold a Manure out of Europe party later tonight then?
