  1. What miner will care about safety now when fame, fortune and free designer sunglasses beckon from the daylight end of a rescue shaft?
  2. Ah, yes - the miracle of transubstantiation. Point taken. I shall transubstantiate a nice piece of steak into your liver tonight ? consider yourself vicariously cannibalised :)

Very easy - many companies and banks provide various levels of service: but speculating in Gold is not a game for widows and orphans, when the price breaks, as it does periodically, it can move up or down like greased lightning.
  4. Probably sick to death of each other's company by now - but, no doubt, they have psychologically bonded for life or until the squabbling over fame, money and sponsorship deals begins in earnest.

Now that you mention it, I rather fancy your liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti. > And that's Catholics HAL, not Christians per se. No - I don't think so. All Christians (even vegans) are supposed to take communion - even if only symbolically. Otherwise they're not true Christians. What sort of Christians were you thinking of?
  6. I think you mean Santiago de Compostela, capital of Galicia. I love Galicia - been there several times. It's best visited during Easter for the world famous celebrations at the cathedral where the remains of the apostle St. James are said to be entombed. The surrounding mountains provide many interesting walking trails - the area experiences above average rainfall, though. Alternatively, there are several specialist walking holiday tour operators based in the Pyrenees where every day one can join guided walks of various lengths and difficulties with groups of like-minded people. I haven't been on a walking tour but have visited some Neanderthal archaeological sites thereabouts - it's a beautiful area.
  7. Well, Christians eat the body and drink the blood of their Saviour - albeit, in order to survive post-mortem - does that count?
  8. The Sterling price of a UK asset (such as a residential property) has fallen more than 30% against the price of Gold (used here as an international benchmark) since the beginning of the 2008 Financial Crisis (all else being equal). In other words, if one had sold a house at the peak and invested in Gold bullion their asset value would now be over 30% greater (or as much as 36% with perfect timing) - assuming UK house prices had remained unchanged during that period.
  9. With those sunglasses on they look like a 33-man boy band - when will they take them off, I wonder? The normal eye shouldn't take more than about 30 minutes to acclimatise. Could they have done a sponsorship deal with the manufacturer?
  10. Hurrah! The 33rd and last miner is out - only five rescuers left underground (it would be kinda funny/ironic if they somehow got trapped now, no?)
  11. The system only works because the majority play along by paying the penalties promptly. This is just a gedankenexperiment: If the majority ignored the PCN, Charge Certificate and Order for Recovery but instead filed an Out-of-Time Statutory Declaration (on the grounds that no PCN had been received) on receipt of a bailiff?s letter advising the issue of a Warrant of Execution (and continued to do so), I reckon the system would collapse within a couple of months and would never be reinstated in its present form again. However, the replacement could be worse: the offences might be re-criminalised.
  12. After you've dumped her, don't forget to run up behind her and nick her hat!
  13. Historic news coverage - great to see those brave guys being rescued. I note that NASA has made good use of the opportunity to study them while trapped in confined isolation - no experiment with paid volunteers can produce such realistic results: if it's any consolation to the miners, their experiences may help astronauts travel to Mars and beyond in the near future.
  14. They all turned into Honor Oak Road where they appeared to split up and cruise along the side streets as if they were searching for something or someone - very odd.

  17. Ha ha ha - your post will look quite silly if I were to edit mine :)

You have identified the very essence of capitalism: an essential commodity like residential property tends to lie beyond the means of everyone except those willing and able to spend a lifetime in debt-bondage to acquire it. Capitalism demands the existence of substantial inequalities between the poor masses and a rich minority otherwise it falls apart. It was an ill-conceived attempt to put an affordable roof over everybody's head that brought the system to the verge of collapse in 2008 - don't forget. Carl Marx predicted its self-destruction years ago - he may still get the last laugh.

    Wouldn't that be Public Relations?

    Double Dip??

Humans have an indefatigable capacity to believe their leaders - it's a wonder we ever survived the evolution of language.
  22. Isn't that (more or less) what I said? Hmmm... earnings / profits - but you know what I mean. I'm sure they could juggle things around a bit and avoid paying tax altogether if they were so minded - the UK is awfully good for that sort of thing.

    Double Dip??

I'm surprised neither of the terrible twins has made this the subject of a 'Top Tips' post yet. FOOL people into thinking the recovery is underway by burning money in pubs and laughing like a banker with a huge bonus.
  24. Actually, foreign money isn't taxed here - it's only the earnings of those managers or administrators who choose to be liable to UK taxation that are taxed. That amount represents a tiny fraction of the principal. The fact is, the UK is one of the best tax havens in the world - as long as one is on the outside looking in.
