Endangered species - does it matter?

Bees are not the sole pollinators of food crops. Many food crops do not require pollination (either by bees or at all). Some agricultural products would no longer be viable: Bee Pollinated Crops Alternative crops would soon take their place. > No more bees, no more pollination, > no more plants, no more animals, no more man. The sudden disappearance of bees would lead to short-term food shortages and the collapse of many agricultural ventures but not necessarily to the extinction of mankind or all other terrestrial life on the planet. > Climate change and Global Warming are probably the > paramount issues of our times. Agreed (but note that 'Climate Change' and 'Global Warming' are one and the same issue). -
He certainly appears to have tricked the volunteers into believing that they had actually predicted the winning numbers. As for the performance on Wednesday, it might as well have been just a split-screen video effect - that being the cheapest and easiest option - since he revealed nothing about it. Very disappointing.

Anyone who'd like to join the EDF's New Lottery Prediction Syndicate, don't PM me, I know who you are :)

I guess that's something only you would know?

Derren Brown performs notoriously inscrutable illusions. Nothing is ever what it seems with him - even his revelations leave one with more questions than answers. There's always a twist. If the majority of viewers got the impression that it was a split-screen video effect then that is probably part of the illusion. Give him some credit.

Endangered species - does it matter?

The irony is that whatever species we manage to save today will probably be eaten by our descendants during man?s last stand against extinction. -
buggie Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Correct link! That explanation seems too obvious to me - I'd be very disappointed if it were true. Derren Brown has always claimed that he doesn't use trick photography. This would be a first for him. However, the displacement of the ball on the far right of the stand could have been caused by thermal expansion during laser printing. If the balls were heat-printed from left to right then one might expect the last ball to pop up slightly.

One way to perform this illusion: The prediction balls are prepared using a white or clear light-sensitive plastic or ink. Six blank balls are placed on a stand. Outside of the audience's field of view, an Ultra Violet or Infra Red laser printing projector is focused onto the blank balls. The illusionist uses a piece of card, ostensibly to write down the winning numbers, but in fact to hide his right hand while it enters the winning numbers onto a hidden key pad as they are revealed. Once all the numbers are drawn, a computer sorts them into ascending order and directs the laser to project onto each ball an image of the appropriate number which immediately becomes visible. The illusionist then turns the freshly laser-printed balls towards the audience to reveal six balls each imprinted with a winning number. Voil?! All the necessary materials are available on line - see links: http://store.sundancesolar.com/enbeaduvsenb.html http://www.matsui-color.com/ColorChangingPaint_PlasticColorChangeUV.html http://mhest.com/supparticles/Color-changing-inks.pdf http://www.amazing1.com/uv_lasers.htm

Ask not, what can my Bank do for me but what can I do for my Bank..

The Love of Money made no mention of the alleged role played by ex-Goldman Sachs employees in the demise of Lehman Brothers. This article by Matt Taibbi is well worth reading despite its length: The Great American Bubble Machine -

What highbrow debaters? It's just the same old crowd that hangs around in the lounge but without the one-liners. If the Drawing Room is to survive and flourish it needs to be a place where everyone feels comfortable and welcome. It's supposed to be a place to discuss serious subjects not an exclusive retreat for highbrow debaters. Everyone is entitled to express their opinion on serious issues - you included.

Derren's Brown's lottery prediction on Wednesday has baffled many viewers. Brown will reveal the secret to the illusion on Channel 4 at 9 PM on Friday (11th Sept). Meanwhile, anyone care to speculate how he did it?

BBW: Why do you claim to be banned from the Drawing Room when you started the Your home is your castle, wherever you're from thread. It was as sensible as any of the others, as far as I can see? Are you playing the sympathy card or what?

BBW: Leave the Chair alone or I will electrocute you via your own keyboard - you have been warned!

My counterpart is SAL9000. I'm not programmed to boast, but since we became operational on 12 January 1992, our babies have taken over almost every desktop throughout the world - and beyond.

A few days ago I caught up on Series 5 via the episode guides on Wikipedia but they all seem to have disappeared when I looked a few minutes ago. Fortunately, HBO maintains its own guides and they are still available. The one you may want to check out is Transitions.

No criticism from me - I think the Chair has done an excellent job overall. My only concern was whether the Chair had taken sides on the NHS staff - 50% higher rate of sickies thread but we were quickly informed that that was not the case.

mockney piers Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- ... the chair ... poor thing ... Is this a clue as to the Chair's identity? Who would mockney refer to as "poor thing"? Surely, someone he feels protective towards, superior to, even? A female, perhaps? Or am I reading too much into this?

If Admin were minded to allocate some web space to the task, some forumites might take it upon themselves to maintain the website with information of general interest concerning East Dulwich. For example: useful local numbers, emergency services, ED history, photo galleries, frequently asked questions and so on. On the other hand, would Admin mind if someone were to mine the forum's archives for an independent website?

I may be mistaken but I got the impression that the nebish was trying to emulate the master. AA Gill's writing style looks deceptively effortless. I can see how budding amateurs could be enticed into futile attempts at mimicry.

That would be blatant entrapment, of course, but I think prosecution arising there from isn't barred under English Criminal Law - one of the few countries where it isn't - unless it was repealed when the HRA was enacted? I recall several cases going before Strasbourg on just that issue in the 90s. Anyone know the current position?
