Tips for afterschool clubs for a 12 year old
Soylent Green replied to mima08's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Have you tried Jags or Alleyns? You do not have to be members to book coached activities -
We decided not to renew our brown bin subscription this year, but I can't find a way on the council website to request a bin removal. Am I missing something?

Sounds about right to me. We paid £6k to £7k for our children's oerthadontic treatment 5 to 8 years ago.

GP surgeries that offer shared care agreement?
Soylent Green replied to charlottep's topic in The Family Room Discussion
This is what you are up against, requesting for an NHS GP to accept a private diagnosis: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-65534449 I am not saying that your son's private assessment is bogus, but the NHS has to put in place one policy fits all because they do not have the resources to investigate individual cases. Keep pushing for CAMHS and get your child's SENDCO to do the same. Good luck! -
Hayes Grove and Besant place are both less than 20 years old. There are also mews houses on the site of the old working men's club off Lordship Lane. And there are mews houses off Oglander.

Effective flea treatment and prevention

Preparations from the vets on prescription are the only things that work. The shop bought stuff does nothing. Also flea bomb your house. -
Turning right from East Dulwich Grove onto Forest Hill Rd
Soylent Green replied to a topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
What is needed is a camera to fine all the drivers jumping the lights as they drive from Nunhead to East Dulwich. I've often had to wait at those lights to turn right only to find four or five vehicles jumping across my path on the orange and red lights. -
I met 3 PCSOs at the cemetery last week handing out maps and emphasising the rules. They told us about some complaints that have been made about dog walkers (not picking up poo, walking on key graves - war memorial etc - and about one old lady who was knocked over by a dog). Increased presence and clamp down are in response to these compaints. I usually let my dog trot along off lead around the cemetery as I know she is no threat, but I appreciate that the rules exist for a reason and if we want to enjoy the beauty and bird song of the cemetery while dog walking we just have to do as we are told. There's One Tree Hill and Sydenham Woods near by for untethered wooded dog walking afterall .

GP surgeries that offer shared care agreement?
Soylent Green replied to charlottep's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I think you will have to keep pushing for a CAMHS diagnosis. I have seen many posts like this on the ADHD parents FB group and no-one had found an NHS gp to prescribe from a private diagnosis. Methylphenidate (and other ADHD meds) are very tightly controlled which is why CAMHS set up shared care agreements with GPs. A GP cannot prescribe without the guidance and consent of an NHS psychiatrist. Be persistent and keep pushing and you will get the NHS diagnosis. It may not take as long as you think. My daughter was diagnosed in 2016 and we waited less than a year for her first appointment. Good luck! -
St John's and St Clement's Primary School Street
Soylent Green replied to gaylad's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
One of the problems with this is that Ady's road is the main access out of the area as you cannot exit through Ondine, Copleston or Oglander. Imagine the cars trying to turn right at the bottom of the park by the church - in both directions - as well as problems at the Amott road end. Fiasco! -
She will be invited to the Maths Scolars' days at Imperial University where they work with undergrads on problem solving and also invited on maths trips. She will also be invited to attend specialist maths sessions in school.

Cost of Loft Extension?
Soylent Green replied to Delawis Delaw's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Ours is now 5 years old, so I cannot comment on current costs. If your existing stairs are more than 10 years old, you do not have to have them redone. If your existing loft has steels, you might not need new ones, but a structural engineer would need to see it. If your roof is good, this will also help. We had ours done by an amazing local builder (as opposed to a loft conversion company) who worked with our ideas and added some of his own which we liked. His mantra was 'this is not a problem' whenever we raised an issue. Because he was not working to a template, we didn't have to have things done that we didn't need/want. However, unlike loft conversion companies, you will need your own architect and structural engineer. -
School picket lines this Thursday
Soylent Green replied to BornAgainSELondoner's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
So, you would prefer more teachers to leave the profession than the thousands that are leaving already. Perhaps you don't think children need to be eductated by skilled and talented professionals and would rather these highly numerate and literate people with excellent communication and personal skills went and worked elsewhere. I personally value education and the people who teach. I also think that if there weren't picket lines, you 'd probably be berating teachers for having a day off! -
Does anyone have this driving school's number?
Soylent Green replied to Soylent Green's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thanks Silvano. I will email you. -
Just putting feelers out for a suitable driving school for my kids. I drive a Toyota Yaris Hybrid and am looking for an instructor that uses this same car. I saw one on Grove Vale today but did not have time to take down the number. If anyone knows a driving school that uses this type of car - or other similar automatic - please get in touch!

Dog walker kicked dog on Champion Hill

It will be nteresting to see if she is seen out with so many dogs again. Five on leads seems too many to me. -
There is (used to be) a club based at the Harris Girls sports centre. I am sure if you google Dulwich Table Tennis Club you will find some details.

How to get a dyslexia screening for my son?
Soylent Green replied to AnnieT's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Apologies for doing this, but there is an inaccuracy in the paragraph below, which I think needs addressing. It is that schools will get extra funding if your child gets a diagnosis. The first £6000 of any SEND support has to be found by the school out of existing funding and thereafter the local authority decide if the 'need' is needy enough to warrant extra support. Because Southwark has lost on average £500 per pupil per year and has the burden of the fuel price crisis to bear, it is only the more extreme cases that get support, particularly children who may pose a danger to themselves and others. There is just no money in the pot for those who would benefit but are not posing a significant problem. For example, I tutor an 8 year old girl who has a Southwark diagnosis of moderate to severe dyslexia and she still does not have a one to one even though she is working at Reception /low year 1 level in a year 4 classroom. If your child has reached the age of 12 without a diagnosis, he is unlikely to be awarded any additional support other than extra time in exams. Extra time is well worth it for GCSEs and above, but schools will generally fund year 11 diagnoses because the extra time given affects students' grades - which look good on the school. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this is the awful situation schools are in. I think if you are going to spend £650, you would be better off getting a private educational psychologist to assess him and see if they can recommend any strategies that might help him manage his school work. The School will need to liaise with them, there's alot of online forms to complete, but i have checked with Charter ED for example and they had confirmed in writing that they do recognise the findings of Helen Arkell Centre etc so you would in theory get funding through Southwark, well the school would, but your child would get extra help at school presumably. Seems like schools are struggling financially (like everyone else) and that's why they're not testing? apparently 1 in 10 of us have dyslexia! BTW there is a test the School can do, the LUCID test, which should flag up any major issues, you can request this test and a copy of the results. The School can not refuse this. This might be helpful. Good luck getting the support your son needs -
Best Dulwich/Denmark Hill schools
Soylent Green replied to KJ133's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I would start by checking out the furthest distance from places offered last year. I am not sure any home in East Dulwich would be in the 'catchment' for both Harris Primary and Lyndhurst, but demand for places may have fallen significantly, so this could potentially be the case. Likewise, the previously miniscule catchment for Belham may have increased. If I were you, I would go with your gut feel and list your preferred schools in the order you liked most. Then fill your other spaces with three very local other schools Lots of people here have commented on Bessemer, so you should consider this too as well as one or two of your less favoured schools as at least they are local. Remember, these are not choices. They are preferences, and you will be offered the school which is highest on your list that fits within their admissions criteria. -
I live in PW and find that the survey does not give enough options. I am in favour of the CPZ as it enables me to park closer to my house. However, if I use the car in the morning and return after 11am, I have to resort to adjacent streets to park, which in my view negates the benefit of a CPZ. I have no problem with the council making money out of a CPZ - councils have not been able to increase council tax by much and receive no more money from central government. If a CPZ keeps a library open, or helps maintain our green spaces, then that is a good thing. I just wish the consultation had had an option for a 4 hour CPZ rather than just a keep the 2 hour one or increase to a full day.

Moving to area after schools application deadline
Soylent Green replied to SarahR's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Do you have an address in this area yet? If missing the deadline is because of a house purchase deadline, I would use your new address and hope that you are in situ before offers day and proof of address is required. If you do not yet have an address, you will have to apply to the LAs and the individual schools and join waiting lists. You will be offered a place at an undersubscribed school and then you can stay on the waiting lists for your preferred schools. If you are looking at primary schools, most good schools are now undersubscribed because of the falling birth rate, so this is not too odious. However, there is much more pressure on secondary places. -
