  1. It depends on the school. Southwark schools have not yet adopted the fashionable Singapore maths which many Lewisham schools have. Both systems have benefits. There will be more differentiation in Southwark schools with a progression from concrete methods to number only work with focus on place value by Year 3. Lewisham focuses more on concrete methods and visual representation, but does not have differentiation which can be tricky for children struggling to get to grips with maths. Both provide greater depth challenges which focus on reasoning.
  2. You could keep him at the Villa and see if you can get a place on the waiting list to get into a state school you like. Otherwise, why not take a look at some of your closest primary schools, which you might not yet have considered. They might surprise you.
  3. I have seen a few of these yellow notices on cab windows, but the hand written part about getting your cabs out of Southwark and the lack of reference number made me wonder if they are fake. The notices give a 7 day time frame, so let's see if they are gone by next week.
  4. I have two children at Kingsdale and both enjoy school and are achieving well. My eldest is academic and is appropriately challenged, my other has SEND and has been supported incredibly well. The size of the school may be off-putting for some, but my kids like the fact that they can feel anonymous when they wish to. Despite the huge intake, teachers and heads of year seem to be able to get to know the students and are very supportive and knowledgeable. Theh school is very strong pastorally.
  5. One thing you have not mentioned is where you live in relation to these schools, which is key to getting a place, but also you need to think about your walk to school in the morning. When we were looking many years ago, we were between Heber and DKH and were told we would be lucky to get a place at either. You have space for 5 schools in your form, so put these down as 1, 2, and 3, and then add your closest schools as 4 and 5.
  6. I have observed about a dozen of these unlicensed black cabs in the streets around Copleston, Oglander and Ondine. They all just sit parked up unused, with the taxi licence plate missing, except for their quarterly visit to the sprayers, when their owner pops his single London Taxi License Plate onto the vehicle to get a new ad sprayed onto it. Thankfully, the CPZ, which only allows 2 vehicles per address, should put a stop to this devious practice.
  7. Southwark permits dog walkers to walk up to six dogs at a time. I don't know how anyone could do this and pick up shit whilst also making sure the dogs are behaving themselves. Southwark's ruling should be changed to 4 dogs in my opinion.
  8. Explain to your daughter that you think the best people to help are the teachers and that they won't mention any names or say how they became aware of what is happening - then speak to the school and explain your daughters fears over what she has reported.
  9. If your child is only six, I think your priority should be patience and rewarding progress, no matter how small. Six is very young to be focusing on poor spelling and handwriting. Instead provide lots of praise for what is done well. Speak to the teacher/phase leader about the handwriting problem. Highlighting the lines to write on helps a lot of children. At home, dot to dot and colouring can help pencil control and any fine motor activities will also help.
  10. Au pair plus is ?120 to ?150 for up to 35 hours per week. We required our au pairs to work about 18 hrs and paid ?75, plus covered all living costs. They were free to earn money outside our home and most did, as we did not require a huge number of hours. There is a fine line between giving someone enough to enjoy living in London on a studenty type budget, and attracting potential au pair that prioritises pay over the experience of living with a London family. After a couple of bad experiences we reduced our pay and hours to focus on people who wanted the experience.
  11. Good luck with that, but I will not be supporting your plight. I have no problem with the cafe going cashless - especially considering its vulnerable, isolated position. Agree with many that people without access to a card are unlikely to offer their custom, and let's not forget that most teenagers even have debit/cash cards. My only concern is for the staff who may miss out on tips.
  12. We are getting an older puppy this week and have booked her into Maison Dog three times a week rather than leaving her home alone on the days I work. Problem is, it doesn't open until half eight - which is too late for our work commitments. We are therefore looking for a dog friendly person, young or old, who could pick her up from our house a couple of times a week, give her a bit of a run around on Goose Green and drop her at Maison Dog at around 8:30. You don't need to be a professional dog walker (I have asked a couple and it doesn't fit with their business model). We just need a trustworthy and reliable person who is comfortable with dogs and doesn't mind picking up a bit of poo should the situation arise. Could work for a student, pensioner or someone who starts work later in the day who likes dogs but isn't able to have one of their own. Please PM me if you can help. Thanks.
  13. On his way back from the station last night, Mr SG found a women's biker style black leatherette jacket on the ground on Grove Vale. Looks like it was dropped accidentally. Was it you?
  14. Hi I seem unable to post a message containing text in the FS section but can post a test message - could you assist please admin ? thanks eta, maybe some words were blocked by filter. seems to work now.
  15. Before the Eastern European countries joined the EU, we used to provide a letter of invitation for our au pairs, who were able to work in Britain/EU for up to 2 years as an au pair. I imagine something similar will replace the free movement after suicide Brexshit.

  17. Twigs Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Thanks so much but we would be too late to apply > elsewhere! Actually it isn't. There is lots of chopping and changing on results day and even into the first few weeks of the term. It sounds like you were just looking for reassurance tho, so I hope it all goes well, but if it doesn't...
  18. Are you looking at secondary schools for future admission starting at year 7 (age 11), or to join an existing year group? If the latter, you could move next door to your preferred school and still not get a place, as you will be dependent on someone leaving the school to get a place if that school is at its maximum capacity. Last year I helped a friend try to find a school place for a year 8 girl and none of the Southwark schools could help. She ended up at Haberdashers - a much sought-after Lewisham school that just happened to have an in year vacancy. If you are looking at Year 10, I would reckon Kingsdale would be a good bet as quite a large number of students leave to join the Brit School, which only starts at age 14.
  19. I looked at Charter for my son, but he chose to stay at his old school, partly because he had heard of difficulties experienced by switchers. No serious problems, but students finding they spend the first half term (7 weeks) finding their feet - getting used to the different teaching methods and routines, making friends and integrating themselves into new established friendship groups. And perhaps more significantly, finding that the school had done a different exam board and therefore syllabus for some subjects so there was some catching up to do in some topics. Had you considered SFH6? Because it is a merger of Sydenham and Forest Hill, there is integration all round perhaps making it is easier to make friends. My personal favourite of all the 6th forms was Haberdashers, which offers six hours of contact time per subject as opposed to the usual five.
  20. We used revolutions cycling many years ago to get our daughter cycling. However, I have just tried the website and it is no longer working. I would ask Southwark who does their cycle training, or you might like to try Cycle Nation which is a not for profit and does the bike repairs in North Cross Road market.
  21. I would start here: https://exampapersplus.co.uk/11-plus-exam-james-allens-girls-school-jags-practice-papers/ https://www.jags.org.uk/userfiles/jagsmvc/documents/admissions/Maths%20Syllabus.pdf https://www.jags.org.uk/userfiles/jagsmvc/documents/admissions/DOCUMENT-11-Sample-Maths-Entrance-Examination-paper.pdf https://www.jags.org.uk/userfiles/jagsmvc/documents/admissions/DOCUMENT-11-Sample-English-Entrance-Examination-paper.pdf https://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/ Your daughter should be working beyond expected standard - also called at Greater Depth. Give her a chance to look at the sample materials over the summer (look at the examples from Alleys too). Use these to see which areas she needs to work on. If you would like someone to do this with you, I am happy to help (I am a primary school teacher).
  22. Does anyone on here know of a local charity that accepts duvets, sheets and duvet covers? I need to declutter my children's old bedding, since they are now in double beds, but am loathe to just bin them.
  23. There is lots about IH and other online schools, such as Briteschool, on Mumsnet
