  1. really? is this true?? what a shame - Herne Hill has done so well to avoid chains. there is another new place that is opening opposite number 22 where the off-licience used to be.... any idea what that will be?

The fact that the > senior managers are so well paid out of our taxes > would prevent me wanting to donate anything. the expectation that the Kings management should take a cut in wages to support the hospital is ridiculous! Do you expect Oxfam or Guide dogs for the blind management to cut their salaries???? & the continued assurtion that management in the NHS are exceptionally well paid is absurd - where are you getting your ill-informed information or is it purely based on urban myths? if we want the NHS to be function effectively then it has to pay it's employees close to the going rate. One could argue that the management do take a cut in salary by moving to the NHS - the seniors could certainly earn more in the open market. the money raised through the Kings charity will go to kit & extras that wouldn;t be possible without support from neighbours. Don;t think it is alone in the requests for support this is happening in varying forms throughout the land & always has done. Hospitals have always relied on philanthrpists who are willing to contribute to the care of others - this is seen in the names of wards, departments etc. If you can't then don't.... but stop putting the hospital down for asking. all that said - it is more than reasonable to ask personal information is being used

If you're not happy with the letter - write back to him & say so....... you'll get a reply PS matrons have been bought back

Very much a rarity in a decent-sized > shopping street these days. I agree..... Lordship Lane is blessed with few of the bland homogenous chains which are everywhere else. There is a thread in the Lounge about Cafe Piaf & people complaining that could be taken over by a restuarant chain instead of an interesting independant..... lets keep it local & celebrate the diversity that offers. If you want cheap clothes there is a TK Max in Clapham & Bromley also has Primark! Lordship Lane has shops which are the envy of London - ED Deli, William Rose..... hurrah!
  5. to prevent eggs rolling off your kitchen table simply place them in a bowl or similar receptacle - works every time!
  6. oh thats encouraging - don't normally hear praise for estate agents. I am about to put my place on the market so am on the look out
  7. owwww! I want to be Spartacus.... being a sofa is good but I want to be Spartacus - can I? Spartacus Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I too have a confession > > I'M SPARTACUS ;-)
  8. oh that looks alright! it is a chain but only insofar as there is one other branch..... not a whole chain, more of a second link. I think we could have done a lot worse with pizza hut/wagas/strada or, well.... Piaf!
  9. I stumbled across this thread & can't believe how accusatory elderflower is in her views on both the EDWI & ED itself. Please elderflower, if you don't like it here go back north of the river. elderflower Wrote: > I find east dulwich laughable in there are several > threads where you make a judgement and end it with > telling people not to do the same. 10. ah, the lovely Sophiesofa - I have heard her name in hushed tones *from the more upholstered part of the suite you know*
  11. is truepenny's the new one? I understood that it has been around for a while but was operating from the owners front room! ruffers Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > No, please, tell me more. > > (Sorry but this has been done to death, which one > are you talking about)

  13. oh I dislike Waggamummas.... all those communial tables - like a canteen! the postmaster opposite wasn;t givning much away but said a big italian chain & rolled his eyes
  14. can't help with the pricing problem but if you google the companys name a lot of people have had problems with them.. I ordersed some jars from them a few weeks ago - took ages to get a delivery as they were out of stock. it let me buy before saying there were none I wouldn't use them again - it all got too complicated & their communication is pretty poor
  15. what a dreadful thought! they are really over-priced & unimaginative. it's all going cupcakes & preppy sweatshirts round here
  16. there is a Cafe Piaf in Wimbledon & I think Richmond. You are right, I could stay home & whip up a good meal but it kind of defeats the object of eating out
  17. Cafe Piaf is a chain as well. You are absolutely right about Romeo Jones & the blue deli both of which are great as is the tea shop next to the book shop, however it is in the evening that I need a decent resturant. Dulwich Village has 3 resturants all of which are chains, Herne Hill is small & on Half Moon Lane alone there are also 3 resturants (Lombok, Cafe Prov & No 22) all of which are independantly owned & are a joy
  18. as long as East Dulwich continues to discourage chain resturants I'll be happy! I love the locally owned places that you find in ED & Herne Hill but are so lacking in Dulwich Village
  19. I have just eaten my first brownie from Lucia on Lordship Lane... very disappointing. all dry & floury, no crispy top & gooey innards. Say what you want about ED Deli but their brownies knocks the socks off the one I've just had
  20. Lordship Lane is great but evidence of it being chi-chi is that it is attracting young hip families searching for proper gyms & organic hand picked coffee served with super-skinny milk from virgin cows............ purrleease!!
  21. East Dulwich Deli have the best chocolate brownies imaginable. the staff aren;t unhelpful as someone suggested - it is my favourite place & the cheesecake is second only to the brownies! oh & fabulous bread!! Long Live East Dulwich Deli!!
  22. try Oxfam in Herne Hill after the weekend..... I am planning on donating mine on Saturday! it's an old fashioned oblong one with crockery & cutlery etc
  23. all the children I know who have been to ballet have really wanted to go & have pestered untill it was set up..... most drop out in a few months because they don't enjoy it as much as they think they will. Being dressed in a pink tutu is usually what atracts them
  24. there is a lovely wool shop in Herne Hill opp the train station East Dulwich is perfect the way it is..... Dulwich Village needs help though.... a decent resturant please if you are asking!
