Cocktails in ED & surrounding area

Hi,

I'm new to the area and a big cocktail fan. Any recommended bars? I'm talking about decent quality cocktails made by a someone who knows what they are doing. Doesn't have to be pricey, just a good cocktail. ED venues especially sought. Thanks in advance!

Agree on Pedlar. I have never had a great cocktail in ED though. As is the case with their food, The Crooked Well in Camberwell does great cocktails. Communion bar is pretty good too.

House of Tippler next to GBK. They do a mean white Russian, amongst others...

Little Nan's is a new one to me. Looks interesting... a bit wanky/hipster though. I can't decide if ?35 for two hours of unlimited cocktails is a good idea or not. I guess 4 cocktails is the "break even" point.

I used to get through 6 by 6 in the Bar Story Happy Hour - and it only started at 5. I did pick up a ban for my troubles (commuted now though!)

Cocktails are a MAHOOSIVE money maker for bars. Usually containing very little alcohol, so lots of money for a sugary drink. A very good cocktail barman (I refuse to say "mixologist") once said that you'd be crazy to buy anything much other than a martini or manhattan, as pretty much everything else is a rip off. I love me a vodka martini. Very dry, with a twist.

Thanks for all these suggestions. I already liked the look of The Communion Bar. Little Nan's is new to me. I live just off Lordship Lane so it's a shame it seems there are no actual cocktail bars on LL (or even in ED). The ones mentioned all look to be restaurants that serve cocktails.

Agree with this. First Aid Box is fairly new but a top little bar. I like the first aid concept as well.

House of Tippler is on LL and is definitely a cocktail bar.. they do food but it's not really a restaurant.

Pedlar is definitely a restaurant, and I'm not sure if I'd want to go there just for a drink (or if such a thing is even possible?)

There's a place in Brixton called Shrub and Shutter. Slightly incongruously sited along a quieter stretch of Coldharbour Lane, but best cocktails I've had in ages. Genuinely innovative, original, nicely presented, unpretentious interior. Check it out.

Not on Lordship Lane either but I do like Belair House, feels very grand and have had some good cocktails there.

Another recommendation for First Aid Box! (Sister bar to the above mentioned Shrub and Shutter)

The Crooked Well in Camberwell also do excellent cocktails

A little further afield - Brunswick House in Vauxhall is also great

I'm afraid I do not rate the Communion Bar. The cocktail list looks really interesting but the cocktails fail to deliver. The Crooked Well is usually great for cocktails; though on the last occasion the barman had no idea how to make a dirty martini - but there again I was ordering one on a Saturday lunchtime so I probably got what I deserved!

Dee Dees in Herne Hill, on Herne Hill is great, small intimate, has a happy hour, ladies night on Thursdays and a HUGE whisky selection too. Bar manager Elijah's a mean cocktail maker too. My fave's a caipirinha...
