You might find that your title plan ( or those of your neighbours on either side ) indicate whose responsibilty it is to maintain the boundary .Title plan is what I think James means when he says map .

We were in a similar position and were fortunate that our neighbours title plan did indicate this - " T " marks on the title plan and text reference to northern boundaries on the title register . It's only ?3 per copy .I'd look at these first before you ask for the deeds which are more expensive .?7 a page .

Thanks all for your responses, for some reason I didn't get a notification that there had been more replies.

I did contact the Land Registry but they don't have that information.

I also googled it, and it is down to whoever draws up the plans, so no hard and fast rule.

One neighbour did claim that he had the information, but has not as of yet been able to produce said evidence...

Hi - we had the same problem and our neighbours etc got in touch with other neighbours on the road to see if anyone had any indicator - but no-one had. In the end, we just came to a mutual agreement. So if your neighbours can agree with their neighbours etc., about the responsibility, you'll all be able to take responsibility for one side!!

    • According to this site, Giff Gaff is your best bet.  You only need to make a quick 25p call every 180 days to keep the sim active.  Diarise right and that's about 50p a year.   https://kenstechtips.com/index.php/best-payg-sim-for-low-usage
    • I think that's about it.  I know 1pmobile.com do £10 for 60days, or £48/yr, both of which include substantial usage if you need it. PS just checked.  £5 in it too for each of us if you want a referral.
    • Oh. I've been looking into this (online) and it seems I would still have to pay something (at least a fiver)  every month even if I wasn't using the phone, because they all seem to be 30 day rolling contracts. Have I misunderstood? I need something for emergency use only.
