What are these Mothers and why at 1am ?

Woke-up at 0115 this morning to the sound of clanking - some bright spark in a yellow hi-vis suit up a squeaky ladder fitting these babies, to lamposts only. He went right up the street.

From what I can see an adjacent street has them too.

Obviously some sort of camera monitoring operation (aimed at street) but for what and by whom ?

Just to capture traffic data or live feed ?

The large boxes would indicate (to me) there is some sort of recording equipment involved.. ??

they do look weird. although if they are cctv, considering the number of bike thefts and burglaries, probably not a bad thing?

I reckon they are remote controlled CCTV. Operators can move them around to prevent CCTV blindspots.

What I am interested in is why these were put-up at night when this could easily have been do e during daytime.

Was that tactical ?

What about the item that has appeared attached to the traffic lights at junction of Crystal Palace Rd and East Dulwich Rd ,northbound .Just past swimming pool .

I can't post a pic .Though I feel that were I to try and take one I'd be entered on some surveillence log and arrested .

Perhaps.. Just perhaps they are designed to operate at night and needed to be tested and set up accordingly.

Does seem very strange.. Perhap James Barber can throw some light on the subject.

They look like traffic data cameras to me. They used to be a camera up a lampost with a battery at the bottom. They just look like the same thing operating with a smaller battery. They are used for data gathering on traffic flow.

There is no need for cameras simply to measure traffic flow.

Usually 2 cables spread across the road with a box at kerbside does the job.

It can measure traffic count and direction of flow. Data used to determine one way schemes.

After reading this I noticed a camera on the lampost at the corner of Crawthew Grove and Lrodship Lane, pointing straight at the yellow box by East Dulwich Grove. It doesn't appear no streetview (dated April 2015) so must be relatively new.

Maybe this is Southwark's way of financing their water bill repayments?
