DulwichFox
It will never reach the acclaim of its post war 50's status when it was a real destination shopping area. As was Brixton.. Louisa
Foxy, Rye Lane has a completely different demographic to the 50's, and fortunes have changed for the high street more generally, even if that were not the case. My big fear, which is sort of backed up by Seabag's analysis, is that restaurants and cocktail bars will force out long standing businesses, because as rents rise and people become attracted to the neighborhood money will invariably be the deciding factor on the fortunes of Peckham. Whilst I take it on board that Costa Coffee isn't the one and only signal for gentrification, it's certainty a long long way from where the area was just a short five years ago. Something is happening, and it would be a shame if it was only aimed at 'some' of the local population and not at everyone. Hence why I want a return of a big brand department store to the area such as Next or H&M. Louisa. Seabag
I think what happens in reality is that the long standing business are just that, mainly. It's the stragglers and the likes that come up and get subsumed by the 'new wave'. Look at where Honest are, what was there before? Not a long standing business, or if so one which was down and out for the count. It's a Darwinian evolution, though a few dinosaur will remainJust wait until the longstanding private members house/club gets its location sorted, then there's no going back Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/106066-costa-coffee-coming-to-rye-lane-peckham/page/2/#findComment-998448 Share on other sites

Louisa
Seabag your predictions of a restaurant revolution in Peckham are coming to pass. I don't wish to link in the number of planning applications I've found online over the weekend. There are too many. But yet another national chain is heading to Rye Lane along with two smaller London based restaurant chains. On top of this, yet another big name is moving in down the other end of Rye Lane (with private flats being built above). Louisa. root
Love Costa but wish it was Starbucks solely for their Eggnog Latte over Christmas. Nothing comes close. NOTHING.
